The valve surface is provided with at least one protective coating of metallic material on the sealing surface (3) of the valve disc and a protective coating of a ceramic material on that surface (4) of the valve disc which is located on the combustion chamber side. By virtue of the protection against the differing thermal, corrosion, erosion and friction stresses occurring at different points, the service life of the valves is substantially extended. <IMAGE>
