The process involves a rhodium-catalyzed system operating with less than approximately 14% water, utilizing up to two distillation columns. The process should be controlled to minimize propionic acid and aldehyde impurities in the product stream, either through aldehyde removal or aldehyde formation. Iodide levels should be controlled by exposing the product to high temperatures using ion-exchange resins. Ideally, at least one strong acid ion-exchange resin with a silver or mercury exchange lattice should be used for product purification. High temperatures provide the added benefit of controlling the color value (Pt-Co units) of the product stream. The carbonylation of methanol involves a rhodium-catalyzed system operating at less than 14% water, utilizing up to two columns. The distillation method should be controlled to minimize the propionic acid impurities in the product stream and minimize aldehyde impurities by either aldehyde removal or aldehyde formation. Iodide levels should be controlled by contacting the product at elevated temperatures with ion-exchange resins. A more suitable method is to use at least one strong acid lattice-like macro-exchange resin that has exchanged silver or mercury to purify the product. High temperature management provides the added benefit of controlling the color value (Pt-Co units) of the product stream.
