-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Revised 18/08/2016. 10 carbon atoms, no more than 5% aromatic volume of a maximum of 10 carbon atoms, initial boiling point in the range of 24 to 45 °C, T10 in the range of 38 to 60 °C, T30 in the range of 77 to 110 °C, T90 in the range of 130 to 190 °C, and final boiling point no more than 220 °C. The olefin content in the T10 range of 38 to 60 °C is believed to be the main variable in achieving increased stability of engine lubricants (crankcase lubricants), in engines fueled by the gasoline mixture of this invention, frequent stop-and-go engine runs—short trips where the crankcase lubricant does not fully warm up the engine—instead of harsh conditions for lubricant oxidation. The high low boiling point (low T10) vaporization conditions, and olefin content, have been identified as causing a reduction in the emission of harmful combustion gases. The engine crankcase, by "not more than 5% volume of olefin with at least 10 carbon atoms" and "not more than 5% volume of aromatic with at least 10 carbon atoms" means that the fuel is hydrocarbon-based with an olefin content of 10 or more carbon atoms, and an aromatic content of 10 or more carbon atoms, respectively, in the range of 0 to 5% volume. The fuel base, gasoline, is a mixture of hydrocarbons. The suitable boiling point range and distillation curve of gasoline vary depending on the weather and season. Hydrocarbons in gasoline, as defined above, can conveniently be obtained in the well-known ways from gasoline distillation towers directly; aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures are produced synthetically; hydrocarbons are cracked by heat or catalytic cracking; petroleum fractions are cracked by hydrogenation; or hydrocarbons are transformed. Structures with catalytic agents and mixtures of these substances, oxygenates may be included in gasoline, and these substances include alcohols (e.g., methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, tert-butanol). and isobutanol) and ethers, which should use ethers with 5 or more carbon atoms per molecule, such as methyl terbutyl ether (MTBE) or ethyl terbutyl ether (ETBE). Ethers with 5 or more carbon atoms per molecule may be used in amounts up to 15% V/V, but if methanol is used, methanol is used in amounts up to 3% V/V, and a stabilizer will be required. Stabilizers may be required for ethanol, which may be used up to 5% to 10% V/V. (xxi) Base fuels have a T10 up to 103°C, (xxii) Base fuels have a T90 of at least 135°C, (xxiii) Base fuels have a T90 of at least 140°C, (xxiv) Base fuels have a T90 of at least 142°C, (xxv) Base fuels have a T90 up to 170°C, (xxvi) Base fuels have a T90 up to... 150°C, (xxvii) base fuel has a T90 up to 145°C, (xxxviii) base fuel has a T90 up to 143°C, (xxix) base fuel has a final boiling point (FBP) not greater than 200°C, (xxx) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 195°C, (xxxi) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 190°C, (xxxii) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 185°C, (xxxiii) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 180°C, (xxxiv) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 175°C, (xxxv) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 172°C, (xxxvi) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 165°C, and (xxxvii) base fuel has an FBP not greater than 168°C. Examples of compounds that should be used of the above characteristics include (i) and (iv), (ii) and (v), (iii) and (v), (vi), (viii), (x), (xii), (xvi), (xix), (xxii), (xxv) and (xxix), (vii), (ix), (xi), (xiv), (xvii), (xx), (xxiii), (xxvi) and (xxxiii); and (vii), (ix), (xii), (xv), (xviii), (xxi), (xxiv), (xxviii) (xxxvi) and (xxxvii). According to this invention, base fuels have initial boiling points in the range of 28 to 40 °C, T10 in the range of 42 to 58 °C, T50 in the range of 80 to 105 °C, T90 in the range of 135 to 170 °C, and final boiling points not exceeding 200 °C, where the following should be used: The base fuels have initial boiling points in the range of 30 to 40°C, T10 in the range of 45 to 57°C, T50 in the range of 82 to 104°C, T90 in the range of 140 to 150°C, and a final boiling point not exceeding 180°C. This invention subsequently provides for a method of operating a motor vehicle powered by a spark-ignition engine, which involves introducing into the combustion chamber of such an engine a gasoline mixture as specified above. The use of the gasoline mixture as fuel for a spark-ignition engine provides one of several benefits, including improved stability of engine lubricants (crankcase lubricants), leading to a reduced frequency of oil changes, reduced engine wear, e.g., engine bearing wear, engine component wear (e.g., camshaft and piston crankcase wear), improved acceleration performance, higher peak power output, and/or improved fuel economy. Thus, by addition, the invention provides for the use of the gasoline mixture of the invention. As defined above, this is a fuel for spark-ignition engines for improving the oxidation stability of engine crankcase lubricants and/or for reducing the frequency of engine lubricant changes. The invention is understood from the examples shown below, where, unless otherwise indicated, temperatures are given in degrees Celsius and percentages and ratios are given by volume. Experts in the field will appreciate that many fuels are prepared in a well-known manner from well-known refinery supply lines and are readily available for production with knowledge of the variables of the given mixture. In the example, oxidation stability tests on engine lubricants were performed using the following method: A 1.6-liter inline engine, Renault Megane (K7M702), 4-cylinder spark-ignition engine (gasoline), was modified by grinding to increase the cylinder bore diameter and grinding the piston ring ends to increase the end gap, in order to increase the rate of combustion gas expulsion; in addition, a bypass pipe was inserted between the upper cylinder wall above the upper valve plate of the engine, and the crankcase to provide an additional path for combustion gas expulsion into the crankcase. A rocker arm cover (RAC) was installed to facilitate control of the atmosphere surrounding the engine valve train. Before and between each test, the engine was thoroughly flushed to remove all possible contaminants. The engine was filled with 15W/40 engine oil meeting API SG specifications, and the cooling system, both for engine and coolant, was also filled. The RAC coolant was filled with a 50:50 water:antifreeze mixture. Engine testing was performed over 7 days following a test cycle of 24 hours each, involving five 4-hour cycles as per Table 1: Table 1 Control Variables Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Time (minutes) 120 75 45 Speed (rpm) 2500(formula)11 2500(formula)11 850(formula)100 Torque (Nm) 70(formula)3 70(formula)3 0 Oil Inlet oz 69(formula)2 95(formula)2 46(formula)2 Coolant oz 52(formula)2 85(formula)2 46(formula)2 RAC Inlet oz 29(formula)2 85(formula)2 29(formula)2 Followed by an oil sampling cycle where step 3 of Table 1 is replaced by step 3. Modified by a 10-minute idle period (850 (formula) 100 rpm), a 25-gram oil sample was separated (every second day and on the seventh day (only), samples were separated). The engine was then stopped and left to idle for 20 minutes. During the next 12 minutes, the oil level dipstick reading was checked and engine oil was added (only during the test, not at the end of the test). During the last 3 minutes of this 45-minute phase, the engine was then run again. Test measurements per oil sample were performed to evaluate heptane insolubility (according to DIN 51365 except that oleic acid was not used as a coagulant), total acid number (TAN) (according to IP177), total base number (TBN) (according to ASTMD4739), and the amount of wear metals (Sn, Fe, and Cr) according to ASTM 5185 except that the sample was diluted by factor 20 in white spirit, instead of factor 10). From the TAN and TBN values (in mg KOH/g lubricant), the TAN/TBN ignition point was calculated (test hours). Sample 1: Three basic hydrocarbon gasoline fuels were tested. Comparison sample A is a base fuel widely used in fuels sold in the Netherlands in 2002. Comparison sample B is equivalent to comparison sample A with the addition of a heavy platformate (a higher boiling point minor component). The refinery stream (produced by reforming naphtha on a platinum catalyst) to increase aromatic compounds (Example 1, corresponding to comparative example A) was treated with the addition of light-catalyzed gasoline (lower boiling point fractions of the refinery stream produced by catalytic cracking of heavier hydrocarbons) to increase olefins.
