The invention also relates to silica-based sols having an S value in the range from 15 to 25%, a Si:Al mole ratio in the range from 20:1 to 50:1, a Si:X mole ratio, where X = alkali metal, in the range from 5:1 to 17:1, containing at least 5% SiO2 by weight, and containing silica-based particles having a specific surface area of at least 300 m2/g. The invention further relates to a process for producing paper comprising (i) providing an aqueous suspension comprising cellulose fibers; (j) adding one or more draining and water-retaining agents to a suspension comprising a silica-based sol according to the present invention; and (k) removing water from the resulting suspension to obtain sheets or pulp fibers.
