Abstract

The invention provides a nanotechnology-based non-invasive device for continuous measurement of glucose levels in saliva. A method of the invention includes collecting a small saliva sample by placing the one-time use strip into the mouth of the patient for a few seconds and placing the above-mentioned strip into the handheld device for the glucose reading. The method of the invention is performed by using a kit of the invention. The kit comprises a strip including an amperometric glucose biosensor and a reader for glucose screening by comparing the current readout with a standard calibration curve or by automatically converting the current flow generated by the tested sample to units of glucose concentration. The biosensor comprises a graphene or redox mediator-functionalized graphene working electrode having a glucose oxidase layer for the oxidation of glucose, a reference electrode and a counter electrode. Ali the electrodes are formed on an insulating substrate. Measurement of saliva glucose concentration with the kit provides a non-invasive probe of a patient's blood glucose level since a linear relationship exists between blood glucose concentration and saliva glucose concentration.
