Abstract

The current patent applies an easy, quick, and applicable crack repair method for aluminum and magnesium alloys by the friction stir processing. The original apparent cracks can be disappeared after repaired by this method and the repaired area exhibit better material properties, such as finer grain sizes and higher hardness values. The texture of the repaired area would also change during friction stir processing that enable materials to possess higher formability for industrial applications. The apparent cracks, 0.75 to 4.5 mm in depth and 1 to 1.75 mm in thickness, are demonstrated to be repaired successfully by friction stir processing, using a stir pin of tool 6 mm both in diameter and height. Stir pins with other dimension can be applied for other forms of cracks.
