Description
本發明係關於一種電泳分散液,詳言之,包含不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子以便改良電泳顯示器之雙穩定性的電泳分散液。
電泳顯示器(EPD)為基於影響懸浮於介電溶劑中之帶電荷顏料粒子之電泳現象的非發射性裝置。EPD典型地包含一對間隔開之板狀電極。該等電極板中之至少一者(典型地在檢視側上)為透明的。由介電溶劑與其中分散的帶電荷顏料粒子組成之電泳分散液封閉在該兩個電極板之間。
電泳分散液可具有分散於具有對比色之溶劑或溶劑混合物中的一種類型之帶電荷顏料粒子。在此情況下,當在兩個電極板之間施加電壓差時,顏料粒子藉由引力遷移至與顏料粒子極性相反的電極板。因此,透明板處展示之色彩可為溶劑之色彩或顏料粒子之色彩。板極性之逆轉將使粒子遷移至相對板,因此逆轉色彩。
或者,電泳分散液可包含具有對比色且攜帶相反電荷的兩種類型之顏料粒子,且該兩種類型之顏料粒子分散於澄清溶劑或溶劑混合物中。在此情況下,當在兩個電極板之間施加電壓差時,兩種類型之顏料粒子將移動至顯示單元之相對末端(頂部或底部)。因此,在顯示單元之檢視側將可見兩種類型顏料粒子之一種色彩。
對於所有類型之電泳顯示器,顯示器之個別顯示單元內所含
之分散液為裝置最重要的部分之一。分散液之組成在很大程度上決定裝置之壽命、對比率、切換速率及雙穩定性。
本發明係關於一種電泳分散液,其包含分散於溶劑或溶劑混合物中之帶電荷顏料粒子及不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子,其中該等添加劑粒子之平均直徑為該等帶電荷顏料粒子之平均流體動力學直徑之約1%至約25%。
在一個具體實例中,分散液包含具有相反電荷極性及對比色的兩種類型之帶電荷顏料粒子。

由聚(甲基丙烯酸五溴苯基酯)、聚(2-乙烯基萘)、聚(甲基丙烯酸萘基酯)、聚(α-甲基苯乙烯)、聚(N-苄基甲基丙烯醯胺)或聚(甲基丙烯酸苄基酯)形成。
在一個具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的折射率不同於分散有粒子之溶劑或溶劑混合物的折射率。
在一個具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的平均直徑在約100奈米至約5微米之範圍內。
在一個具體實例中,添加劑粒子之平均直徑小於中性浮力粒子之平均直徑。
在一個具體實例中,電泳分散液中不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的濃度大於2.5重量%,但不超過約25重量%。
在一個具體實例中,分散液進一步包含電荷控制劑。
圖1描繪添加劑粒子可如何誘發帶電荷顏料粒子之絮凝或弱聚結。
在本發明之前,曾提出可藉由將聚合物溶解於電泳分散液中來改良電泳顯示器之影像雙穩定性。然而,此方法之適用性有限,因為將聚合物溶解於分散液中會增加分散液之黏度,導致切換時間增加。
本發明人現已發現:藉由將不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之粒子添加至電泳分散液中,可改良電泳顯示器之雙穩定性,而不會顯著影響切換速度。為了簡便起見,此類型之粒子在本申請案通篇稱為「添加劑粒子(additive particle)」。
術語「帶少量電荷(lightly charged)」定義為具有小於50%、較佳小於25%且更佳小於10%之由帶正電荷顏料粒子或帶負電荷顏料粒子所攜帶之平均電荷的電荷。
添加劑粒子可由諸如聚合物、金屬、金屬氧化物或其類似物之材料製備。舉例而言,其可由聚苯乙烯、聚(2-乙烯基萘)、聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯、二氧化鈦、二氧化矽或金形成。
球狀聚合物粒子可以常用方式製備。舉例而言,在分散聚合中,可添加與電泳分散液相容的穩定劑。在此情況下,聚合物粒子之尺寸可藉由聚合反應之配方而精確控制。特定言之,穩定劑與單體之較高比率傾向於產生較小粒子。
尺寸受控制的二氧化矽粒子可藉由史托伯法(Stöber process)及其新型變化形式來製備。
另一方面,金屬奈米粒子可藉由還原金屬鹽水溶液來合成,例如金奈米粒子之檸檬酸鹽合成。在金屬粒子情況下,可使用若干尺寸控制技術之任一者。舉例而言,較高濃度之還原劑傾向於產生較小粒子。在金屬及金屬氧化物粒子之情況下,亦必須注意使用適用於電泳分散液之穩定劑。
圖1描繪添加劑粒子(11)可如何誘發帶電荷顏料粒子(12)之絮凝或弱聚結。在此圖中,展示帶電荷顏料粒子(12)具有耗盡區(13),在此處添加劑粒子(11)因其尺寸而排除在外。在切換期間,電場促使帶電荷顏料粒子密集聚集,自帶電荷顏料粒子之間的耗盡區排擠出添加劑粒子。在聚集狀態中,系統之能態傾向於處在比當帶電荷顏料粒子分散時更低的能級。此係由於帶電荷顏料粒子周圍之高能量耗盡區重疊且因此降低總耗盡區體積的事實。所得聚集狀態因此為穩定的且抗改變,例如帶電荷顏料粒子藉由布朗運動(Brownian motion)之自發重新分佈,其在電泳顯示器中表現為影像狀態衰減,稱為雙穩定性損失。
當需要改變顯示狀態時,施加反向電場,此舉拉開帶電荷顏料粒子,使得添加劑粒子均勻地分散在帶電荷顏料粒子之中。由於消耗絮
凝能量,此狀態變化需要電壓來分離帶電荷顏料粒子。但一旦發生,帶電荷顏料粒子會移動穿過分散液,該分散液具有與均勻分散狀態相關的相對較低黏度。
添加劑粒子具有某些特徵。首先,粒子必須膠態穩定以防聚結、沈降(或凝稠)或吸附。換言之,其必須在能量方面優選分散狀態,而非吸附於帶電荷顏料粒子或電泳分散液周圍器壁上。
其次,其必須相對於帶電荷顏料粒子保持特定尺寸。添加劑粒子之平均直徑為帶電荷顏料粒子之平均流體動力學直徑之約1%至約25%。而帶電荷顏料粒子之主要粒徑常常在50nm至500nm範圍內,其分散的流體動力學尺寸常常實質上較大。帶電荷顏料粒子通常具有0.1μm至1μm近似範圍內之平均流體動力學直徑。當包括添加劑粒子時,必須考慮此較大流體動力學尺寸。因此,添加劑粒子在大多數情況下為奈米粒子。
第三,添加劑粒子之濃度應控制在分散液之約5體積%至約40體積%、較佳約10體積%至約40體積%內。為了使添加劑粒子有效改良電泳顯示器之雙穩定性,此濃度範圍至關重要。
此外,添加劑粒子之折射率較佳與分散有添加劑粒子之溶劑或溶劑混合物的折射率類似。
最後,電泳顯示器獨有的考慮因素為粒子較佳不帶電荷或帶少量電荷(亦即,帶實質上比帶電荷顏料粒子少的電荷)。
添加劑粒子可存在於包含一種類型帶電荷顏料粒子之電泳分散液中,或存在於包含兩種類型帶電荷顏料粒子之電泳分散液中。
帶電荷顏料粒子可由無機顏料形成,諸如TiO2
、ZrO2
、ZnO、Al2
O3
、CI顏料黑26或28或其類似物(例如鐵錳黑尖晶石或銅鉻黑尖晶石)。其亦可由有機顏料形成,諸如酞菁藍(phthalocyanine blue)、酞菁綠(phthalocyanine green)、聯苯胺黃(diarylide yellow)、聯苯胺黃AAOT(diarylide
AAOT yellow)、及喹吖啶酮(quinacridone)、偶氮(azo)、玫瑰紅(rhodamine)、來自Sun Chemical之苝顏料系列、來自Kanto Chemical之漢撒黃G(Hansa yellow G)粒子、及來自Fisher之碳燈黑(Carbon Lampblack)。
帶電荷顏料粒子亦可為表面塗有聚合物層之粒子,且聚合物塗層可經由多種習知聚合技術製備。
帶電荷顏料粒子可攜帶天然電荷或經由電荷控制劑之存在而帶電荷。
分散有帶電荷顏料粒子之溶劑或溶劑混合物較佳具有低黏度及在約2至約30、較佳約2至約15之範圍內的介電常數以獲得高粒子遷移率。合適介電溶劑之實例包括:烴類,諸如合成異構烷烴(isopar)、十氫萘(DECALIN)、5-亞乙基-2-降冰片烯、脂肪油、石蠟油;矽流體;芳族烴類,諸如甲苯、二甲苯、苯基二甲苯基乙烷、十二烷基苯及烷基萘;鹵化溶劑,諸如全氟十氫萘、全氟甲苯、全氟二甲苯、二氯三氟甲苯、3,4,5-三氯三氟甲苯、氯五氟-苯、二氯壬烷、五氯苯;及全氟溶劑,諸如來自3M Company,St.Paul MN之FC-43、FC-70及FC-5060;低分子量之含鹵聚合物,諸如來自TCI America,Portland,Oregon之聚(全氟環氧丙烷)、聚(氯三氟乙烯)(諸如來自Halocarbon Product Corp.,River Edge,NJ之鹵烴油)、全氟聚烷基醚(諸如來自Ausimont之Galden或來自DuPont,Delaware之Krytox油及Greases K-Fluid系列)、來自Dow-corning之基於聚二甲基矽氧烷之矽酮(DC-200)。該溶劑或溶劑混合物可藉由染料或顏料著色。
除不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子之外,分散液可進一步包含不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子。
術語「中性浮力(neutral buoyancy)」係指不隨著重力升高或下降之粒子。換言之,粒子將浮在兩個電極板之間的分散液中。在一個具體實例中,中性浮力粒子之密度可與分散有中性浮力粒子之溶劑或溶劑混
合物的密度相同。
不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子可由聚合材料形成。聚合材料可為共聚物或均聚物。不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之聚合材料的實例可包括(但不限於)聚丙烯酸酯、聚甲基丙烯酸酯、聚苯乙烯、聚苯胺、聚吡咯、聚酚、聚矽氧烷或其類似物。聚合材料之更多特定實例可包括(但不限於)聚(甲基丙烯酸五溴苯基酯)、聚(2-乙烯基萘)、聚(甲基丙烯酸萘基酯)、聚(α-甲基苯乙烯)、聚(N-苄基甲基丙烯醯胺)或聚(甲基丙烯酸苄基酯)。此等材料適於一種粒子系統及兩種粒子系統中之中性浮力粒子。
不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子更佳由不可溶於顯示分散液之介電溶劑且亦具有高折射率之聚合物形成。在一個具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的折射率不同於分散有粒子之溶劑或溶劑混合物之折射率。然而,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的折射率典型地高於溶劑或溶劑混合物之折射率。在一些情況下,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之折射率可超過1.45。
在一個具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之材料可包含芳族部分。
不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子可由單體經由聚合技術製備,諸如懸浮聚合、分散聚合、種子聚合(seed polymerization)、無皂聚合(soap-free polymerization)、乳液聚合或物理方法,包括逆乳化-蒸發法。單體在分散劑存在下聚合。分散劑之存在允許形成所需尺寸範圍之聚合物粒子,且分散劑亦可形成與聚合物粒子表面物理或化學結合之層,以防止粒子聚結。
分散劑較佳具有長鏈(至少八個原子),其可穩定烴溶劑中之聚合物粒子。該等分散劑可為丙烯酸酯基封端或乙烯基封端之大分子,
此係由於丙烯酸酯基或乙烯基可與反應介質中之單體共聚合而為合適的。
分散劑之一個特定實例為丙烯酸酯基封端之聚矽氧烷(Gelest、MCR-M17、MCR-M22)。
另一類型之合適分散劑為聚乙烯大分子單體,如下所示:CH 3 -[-CH 2 -] n -CH 2 O-C(=O)-C(CH 3 )=CH 2
。
大分子單體之骨架可為聚乙烯鏈且「n」可為30-200。此類型大分子單體之合成可見於Seigou Kawaguchi等人,Designed Monomers and Polymers,2000,3,263。
若分散系統經氟化,則分散劑較佳亦經氟化。
或者,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子亦可由塗有聚合殼體之核心粒子形成,且該殼體可例如由上文關於中性浮力粒子所確定之任何聚合材料形成。
核心粒子可具有如上所述之無機顏料或有機顏料。
在核殼型不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的情況下,其可藉由微囊化方法來形成,諸如凝聚、界面聚縮合、界面交聯、原位聚合或模板聚合(matrix polymerization)。
不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的平均直徑較佳在約100奈米至約5微米之範圍內。在一個具體實例中,添加劑粒子之平均直徑小於中性浮力粒子之平均直徑。
在本發明此態樣之一個具體實例中,添加至分散液中之不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子可具有實質上與兩種類型帶電荷顏料粒子之一的色彩相同的色彩。舉例而言,在顯示分散液中,可存在帶電荷黑色粒子、帶電荷白色粒子、不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子及不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子,且不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒
子可為白色或黑色。
若不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子為白色,則其可增強顯示器之反射率。若其為黑色,則其可增強顯示器之黑度。
在另一具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子可具有實質上與兩種類型帶電荷顏料粒子之一的色彩不同的色彩。
不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之存在,尤其若其由反射性材料形成,則增加入射光之反射;因此提高對比率。
在本發明之另一具體實例中,電泳分散液中不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子的濃度較佳大於2.5重量%,但不超過約25重量%。在另一具體實例中,不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之濃度較佳在約3重量%至約15重量%之範圍內,且更佳在約3重量%至約10重量%之範圍內。
術語「約(about)」係指±5%指示值之範圍。
除不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子及不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之中性浮力粒子之外,本發明之電泳分散液亦可包含其他添加劑,諸如電荷控制劑。本發明所有具體實例中所用之電荷控制劑(CCA)與電泳分散液中之溶劑相容,且可與帶電粒子表面相互作用,有效產生粒子之正電荷或負電荷。適用之電荷控制劑包括(但不限於)十二烷基苯磺酸鈉、金屬皂、聚丁烯丁二醯亞胺、順丁烯二酸酐共聚物、乙烯基吡啶共聚物、乙烯吡咯啶酮共聚物、(甲基)丙烯酸共聚物或(甲基)丙烯酸N,N-二甲胺基乙基酯共聚物、Alcolec LV30(大豆卵磷脂)、Petrostep B100(石油磺酸鹽)或B70(磺酸鋇)、Solsperse 17000(活性聚合分散劑)、Solsperse 9000(活性聚合分散劑)、OLOA 11000(丁二醯亞胺無灰分散劑)、OLOA 1200(聚異丁烯丁二醯亞胺)、Unithox 750(乙氧基化物)、Petronate L(磺酸鈉)、Disper BYK 101、2095、185、116、9077及220、及ANTI-TERRA系列。
本發明之另一態樣係關於一種電泳顯示器,其中顯示單元以如本申請案中所述之任何顯示分散液填充。
術語「顯示單元(display cell)」係指以顯示分散液填充之微容器。顯示單元可為如美國專利第6,930,818號中所述之微杯,該專利之內容以全文引用的方式併入本文中。
顯示單元亦可為任何其他微容器(例如微囊或微通道),不考慮其形狀或尺寸。所有此等微容器均在本申請案之範疇內,只要微容器以顯示分散液填充即可。
儘管本發明已參考其特定具體實例加以描述,但熟習此項技術者應瞭解在不悖離本發明之範疇的情況下可作出各種變化且可替代為各等效物。另外,可進行許多修改以使特定情形、材料、組合物、方法、一或多個方法步驟適合於本發明之目標及範疇。所有此等修改意欲在此處所附申請專利範圍之範疇內。

Claims (16)
- 一種電泳分散液,其包含分散於溶劑或溶劑混合物中之帶電荷顏料粒子及不帶電荷或帶少量電荷之添加劑粒子,其中該等添加劑粒子之平均直徑為該等帶電荷顏料粒子之平均流體動力學直徑之約1%至約25%。
