Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1911.
Application filed my 2, 1910. Serial No. 558,869. A p
the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in signs of all kinds and particularly to electric signs used for -advertising purposes or the like the object of the invention being to produce such anelectric sign as will give a brighter and clearer display with the use of a minimum amount of light and also one which will be as efiective as a day sign as an i illuminated night sign.
A further, object of the invention is to produce a sign which employs a curved surface in order to illuminate both sides of the sign or background of a sign by the, direct.
- light from each and every lamp used.
I also aim to produce a simple and inexpensive sign and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it isuiesigned.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters ofureference indicate corresponding parts in the several views. 1
,.tional view .taken on a line a'w o'f Fig.1.} 1 Fig. 4: is a sectional View taken on a line y gj of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly. to I ,l mps projecting'horizontally and being in characters of reference on the. drawing," 1
designates the base of the sign which is substantially trough shaped and open at the top and which is the holder and reflector for the lamps. 2 which are arranged preferably in alternate order as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Disposed across the length of this memthe center line of the lamps 2 thus receiving her 1 is the sign proper comprised of a thin; base ,portion 3 disposed substantially across an equal portion of the direct li ht from said lights 2 which said portion 3 ares outward into curved portions 4 on each side which receive the full light from the lamps 2 thus-making the sign stand out clearly and distinctly. The upper outer edges of the members 4 as at 5 are substantially alined with the upper outer edges .of the member 1 which causes the light to be evenly. distributed'and also permits side inclosures '7 to be used, the sign then being displayed through suitable cut apertures 8. The mem-. bers 4 may havea suitable inclosing top and supporting member 6 if desired.
I am aware that concavesurfaces have been used before with lights used in front of them and I am also aware that both sides of a flat surface have been illuminated by the same lights by means of reflectors but what-I claim as my invention is the feature of the use of the curved surfaces in order to from: such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention what curefby Letters Patent is:
A. -s ign comprising a base member being of a substantially V-shape such base being of said base member in alternate order, said illuminate both sides of'a sign or background of the device, still: in practice such deviations I claim as new and useful and desire to se- I open'at'its top, lamps disposed on the sides substantial horizontal slinenqent with each other, a, narrow member disposed; trensversely across the central line of said lamps and having. upwardly curving surfaces thereon, and side inclesing members prejecting from the top edges of seid. curved surfaces to the top edges of said base memher said side inelosing members being perfoinewsee rated! with letters or other designs es descrihei v v In testiineny whereof I sfix my signature in presence 01% two witnesses.
