- Casing 1 is the outer cover of the entire motor. With the valves in the position shown in the drawing, water is introduced through the connecting pipe 27 into chamber 23 which opens into chambers contain ing the ports 7 and 11, which chambers and ports are reciprocal, port 7 being neutral and port 11 active; then water passes through ports 11, 12 and 17 and behind piston 3 and forces the same to the left. As pistons 2 and 3 are both connected to the piston rod 4:, the water in front of piston 2 is forced through ports 16, 6, 18, 9, right 14 and exhaust 26. After the piston 3, in its stroke to the left, passes port 15, the water passes through ports 15, 10 and 19 to the right end of valve 5 and forces the latter to the left until bumper 30 reaches casing 1. Chambers 24 and 25 are reciprocal air chambers.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. BASKER- VILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, hifle invented a new and useful WVater-Motor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is termed a water motor, be cause the motor or engine is mainly intended.
to be operated by water-pressure, while it can be operated with steam or compressed air.
The use of my invention as a water motor is mainly for the purpose of connection with a pump for raising water from cisterns and from some city water main, the motor will stop. WVhen water is drawn from the cistern pipes by means of faucets, the motor will. be put in motion until the Water drawn is replaced and the balancing pressure in the cistern pipes restored, when the motor will again automatically stop, the motor being automatically put in motion by opening a cistern pipe faucet, and automatically stopped when the cistern water drawn is replaced in the cistern pipes.
I am aware that there are motors used for distributing water as above indicated, but owing to their structure there is leakage through such motors when stopped, which is a great defect and which proves very eX- pensive, especially, where the water used is measured by water meters.
Owing to the novel construction of valves and the position of ports in my invention,
no water can pass through it when at rest,
assuming the motor to be carefully constructed according to a correct working drawing. Of course, when used for other purposes than raising water out of a cistern or other-reservoir, the motor is stopped and started by the use of a stop valve in the connection pipe.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in

Casing 1 is the outer cover of the entire motor. With the valves in the position shown in the drawing, water is introduced through the connecting pipe 27 into chamber 23 which opens into chambers contain ing the ports 7 and 11, which chambers and ports are reciprocal, port 7 being neutral and port 11 active; then water passes through ports 11, 12 and 17 and behind piston 3 and forces the same to the left. As pistons 2 and 3 are both connected to the piston rod 4:, the water in front of piston 2 is forced through ports 16, 6, 18, 9, right 14 and exhaust 26. After the piston 3, in its stroke to the left, passes port 15, the water passes through ports 15, 10 and 19 to the right end of valve 5 and forces the latter to the left until bumper 30 reaches casing 1. Chambers 24 and 25 are reciprocal air chambers. Were it not for air-chamber 25, valve 5 in passing to the left, would stop after closing port 12, but the compressed air in said chamber forces down enough water to complete the left stroke. As valve 5 is passing to the left, the water in front of same passes out through ports 18, 9, left 1 1 and exhaust 26, and thus makes a complete reversal of water pressure. Each port and chamber in the right side of the motor is reciprocal with the one in a corresponding position in the left side, not counting the inlet 27 and exhaust 26 which are exactly in the center.
