CARJUNDERFRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Der. 19, 1911L Application filed January 14, 1910. Serial No. 537,988.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, l'TEuMAN C.V Palson, a citizen ot the United States. residing in Chicagm in the county ot' ("ook and State, of Illinois. have invented a new and useful Improvement in (ar-llnderframes. of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for an object the providing ot' a metallic undcrframe wherein the metallic draft-sills may be permitted a wider spread than the metallic center-sills and at the saine time lie rigidly secured to and constitute prolongations ot said centersills through the body-bolster; and the invention has for further objects sueh other improvements in structure or function as may be Found to obtain in the devices hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Forming` a art of these specifications, and in which like reference. numerals indicate like oarts'in all. of the figures` Figure 1 is a top plan view of the. structure. with the upper longitudinal reinforcing plate and the wooden 'transverse members constituti bolster,4 as also indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
sills and the upper transverse member of the body-bolster all broken away to show more clearly the manner of connecting the metallic center-sills with the draft-sills; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the lincA3-3 of Fig.4 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1,.
10, 10 are the wooden center-sills.
11, 11 are the channel-iron center-sills, extending from one to the other of the tw o body-holsters of the car and at either end abutting the inner transverse feces of the each of sal body-holsters, as indicated 1n Figs.- 1" an 2.
N12, 12 are the channel-'iron draft-sills, a' piir at either end of the cnr extending from the body-bolster to the end of the car. andabiitting the outer transverse faces of the transverse members constituting the body- Thesc channel-iron draft-sills have their upper Hangers on the same level as the upper flanges of the `channel-iron center-sills, but are of considerably greater depth than said centersills. the lower flanges of said draftsills depending considerably below the level of the lower flanges of the center-sills. The channel-iron center-sills are so sit-ioned 4that the opposed inner faces of t cir vertieal webs are spaced apart about the same distance as the o lpnsed inner faces of the wooden center-.sil s. as is indicated in Fig.
4: but the draft-sills are spaced apart coniron center-sills and the draft-sillsyand at the saine time rigidly bind the said diifer-l ently spaced sills together at and through the body-bolster, and also to give a firm bearing and connection between cach bodybolster and both of said opposed pairs of sills, there are provided two tiecastings 13, 13 seated in each body-bolster, fitting be; tween and bearing against the upper transverse member 14 and lower transverse member 15 of such body-bolster, each such tiecasting 13 having two oppositely extended and mutually oit- set wings 16 and 17, respectively engaging and secured to the outer face of 4the `vert-ical web of the adjacent channel-iron center-sill and the inner face of the vertical web of the adjacent draft-sill. These respectively ot`-set wings of each tiecasting are rigidly riveted, by rivets 18, to
the webs of the channel-irois'that lthey're- 'widely spread draft-sillgwhose ends abut the. outer transverse Vface ofsaid bolster `and each tie-casting has a firm and rigid bearing i within and connection to the body-bolster that it passes" through. The channelron center-sills intermediate the body-Holsters are further connected with each; other and with the pair of draft-sills bevond each body-bolster, bya wide longitudinal rein-y'- forcing plate 21 resting on top of Vand se-..
cured to the u per ila es of all-of the channel-iron sil s, said 'pile spanning the space between the sills and extending over the upper face ofthe upper-transverse memiio heir of the body-bolster (Fifi 8i-@and also.
supporting the wooden'- een lower faces rest upon the lateral edges of the up r face of said plate gFigs. 3 and 4). 'lhis p ate 21 is further rein orced and stiffened b the pair of angle irons 22 restin 5 long'itu inally along the middle of sai late from one and to the other of the car, etween the wooden center-sills, said angleirons 22 have their vertical webs face to face and their respective horizontal flanges riveted to the plate 21, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The channel-iron center-sills are further secured 'to the draft-sills by the short lower tielate 23 at eacli bolster, such tie-plate exten ing1 under and supporting the under face of' e lower transverse memberl of the body-bolster, and having a width just suilicient to permit it to lit between the opposed faces of the vertical webs of the air of draft-sills, as indicated in Fig. 2o 3. ne end of this lower tielate rests ahgainst and is riveted to the un er side of t e lower horizontal flanges of the channel- 'iron center-sills adjacent the bolster asiiidicated in Figs. 12 2 and 4f' and the other end of `this-lower tie-plate, htting between the o d vertical wehsof the pair of draftsi s, is laterally secured, along its oyposite side edges to the said vertical we s, by means o t e pairs of angle-irons 24, one of the angle-irons of each pair being positioned above and the other below the 'said plate and each angle-iron having its vertical flange riveted' to the vertical web of the adjacent draft-sill, while the horizontal flanges of the angle-irons of each p air on the respectively'o positey sides of the plate, aresecured tege er and to the said late by the rivets that are passed thro? all three members, as indicated in ig. 2. There is thus' provided -the most rigid possible binding together and reinforcin of the channel-iron center-sills interme iate the holsters and the more widely spread metallic draft-sills be ond the .respective holsters at either end otlie cai'.
My invention is hereinabove set forth as embodied in one particular form of construction, but Ifdo not limitit thereto or to less than all the possible forms in which the 5g invention as hereinafter claimed may be emfbodied and distinguished from any prior'devices for like purpose.
