Be it known that I, Josnrn A. Surnom, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Fabyan, in the county of Coos, 'State of New Ham shire, have invented certain new and useful) Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,andexact descrlptlon of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in thev art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpening devlces, and more especially to that type of maclilne adapted to sharpen lknives, and the object Yof my invention 1s to im rove the construction and increase the e ciency of sharpeners of the above described type.

With these and other objects in view my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the drawin which show a preferred embodiment o my device and then specifically ointed out in the claims which are attached) to and form a part of this application. 1

Referring more s ecifically to the drawings in which simi ar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 designates in general the frame of the machine andas shown this frame is provided with a 'downwardly extending arm 2 by means of which it is adapted to be clamlped upon any suitable support the wing bo t 3 serving to secure it in position. As the particular form of frame and clamping mechanism forms no part of my invention no further description of the same is necessary. Journaled in suitable bearings formed 1n are beveled as at 14.

This shaft 8 is also rovided with a second spur gear 9 which mes es with a spur gear 10 which is ke ed near one end of the main shaft 11 of t e machine, said shaft 11 being also journaled in the frame. This mainshaft 11 is provided intermediate its length with two spaced a art grindin disks 12 and 13, the op osing aces of whic ecured to the frame 1 and surrounding these inding disks is .a knife holding member w ich as a whole is designated by the numeral 15. As will be seen by referrin to the drawin supportingemem er consists base mem r 16 and a pair o - shaped jaw members 17 and 18. This base member is pivotally secured to the frame by a bolt o1' other preferred means 19 at a point directly below the shaft 11 and intermediate between the grinding disks 12 and 13. The .end portions of this baselmember are bent upwardly as at 20 and 21A and secured to this knife each of said end portions adjacent the terminals thereof is a U-shaped member 22 the sidemembers of which are provided with perforations 23. The side portions of said U-,shaped member are furtherextended up' wardly and outwardly to form diver in arms 24 and 25 the end ortions of Wiclgi are perforated as at 26 an mounted in these latter perforations is a shaft 27 upon which is rotatably journaled a roller 28, saidroller being preferably formed of some soft metal such as lead. These arms 24 and 25 are so proportioned that the upper faces of the rollers 28 are slightly above the level of the main shaft 11.
The jaw members 17 -and 18 previously mentioned, have their lower ends pivotally secured to the end portions 20 and 21 of the base as shown at 29, and as shown these jaw members together with the base member vcompletely surround the periphery of the grinding disks, said jaws being so positioned that their inner edge portions bear against each other, said portions bein cut away as at 30 to adapt the jaws to t around the U-shaped members 22. Secured to the upper or bight portion of each of said jaws is a vertically extendingvplate 31,-the upper portions of which are bent outwardly as at 32. Mounted in the perforations 23 of each of said U-shaped members is a shaft 33v and the lower portions 'of each of said U-shaped jaw members vare provided with outwardly extending bracket members 34, the end portions of which are provided with apertures somewhat greater in diameter than the diameter of the shafts 33 which shafts extend therethrough. Each end of .each of the shafts 33 is provided with an annular flange or collar 35 and surrounding the shafts 33 and bearing between these fianges and the bracket members 34 are the helical compression springs 36, the function of which is to maintain the jaws in their normal closed position. Bythis means the inner edges of the jaws 17 and 18 normally bear against each other as also do the inner faces of the plates 31, but it will beseen that said jaws and plates may be swung away from each other against the action of the springs 36.
As previously described the base member 16 is pivotally mounted upon the frame and as a tensional device for preventing unwished for swinging of the same I have provided the member 37, which as shown is substantially U-shaped in Isection and lwhich is v positioned transversely across the base of the knife holder with its ends extending be- 'yond the sides thereof and secured to the frame by means of bolts 38. Surrounding these bolts and bearing between the heads thereof and the base portion of the member 37Y are the compressed helical springs 39.
By this means the base member 16 isfrictionally engaged between the supporting frame and the cross member 37 and it will be seen that a slight amount offorce will be required to swing said base together with its knife holding jaws.
In operation the blade of the knifeto be sharpened is linserted between the plates 30 and then forced downwardly between the jaws until its edge rests upon the lead rollers 28, the jaws in the meantime due to the4 tension of the springs 36 maintaining the knife blade in vertical position. The entire knife holding frame is then swung 4upon its supporting frame, by meansof pressure applied to the handle of the lmife, untilone side of the knife edge bears against theA rear portion of the disk 12 and the other side of the knife vedge bears against the forward portion of the disk 13. The disks are then revolved by means of the hand crank and gear mechanism previously described, the knife in the meantime being drawn back and forth between the jaws .to sharpen it throughout its length. After the action has been continued for a suiiicient length of time the knife holding frame is swung in the opposite direction until the knife blade rests -prising a frame,

means v ground throughout their length, and as the bevel of each of the disks is the same both sides of the blade will be equally tapered. The lead rollers prevent the edges of the blade from striking against the shaft 11 and becoming dull.
If an edge with a sharp taper is desired the knife blade is positioned between the jaws at a distance above the rollers instead of resting directly upon them as reviously described, the taper of .the blade depending entirely upon the portion of the` disks engaged b the blade.
The a ove described device is simple and economical of construction, easy in operation and sharpens the blade uniformly throughboth sides of the knife blae are out its length, beveling the same equally upon each side. As will be readily seen there are absolutely no adjustments required other than that of positioning the blade at various heights above the rollers according to the bevel desired.
` It will be understood that the grinding disks may be of any preferred type of material, such as emery or carborundum, and the frame structure and driving mechanism may be modified in any manner without,y in l the slightest degree departing from the spirit of my invention. What I claim is l 1. In a machine for sharpening knives, comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted in said frame, spaced apart grinding disks carried by said shaft, a knife holding member mounted on .said frame, said member being pivoted to swing in a horizon-v tal plane, and means for rotating said shaft.
2. A machine for sharpening knives, coma shaft rotatably mounted on said frame, grinding disks carried by said shaft, a knife holding member swingingly mounted on said frame, spring pressed means for normally holding said member against swinging, and means for rotating said shaft. j 3. A machine for sharpening knives, comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted on said frame, spaced apart grinding disks carried by said shaft, a knife holding member swingingly mounted on said frame, said member comprising a base portion, jaw memberspivotally mounted upon -said base portion lwith their inner edges bearing against each other and spring controlled means for normally holding said jaws in .engagement with each other, and means for said shaft, a knife holding member swingingly mounted on said frame, said member comprising a base portion having upwardly extending side members, jaw members pivotally mounted upon said base portion with their inner edges bearing against each other, U-shaped members secured to said side members and between the jaw members, said U-shaped members being provided with upwardly directed dive'r ing arms, rollers carried by said arms agamst which the edge of the knife is adapted to bear, and means eoacting between said U-shaped members and jaws for holding the jaws in engagement i With each other.
5. A machine for sharpening knives, comprisin a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted on sai frame, means for rotating said shaft, spaced grinding disks carried by said shaft and a knife holding member, said member comprising a base portion pivoted to the frame and beneath the grinding disks and adapted to swing in a plane parallel to the base of the frame, and knife holding jaws carried by said base portion.
