Description

G. JURKOVICH. WRENCH. :AIPPLIOATIOR FILED JANfQ, 1912.
1,027,341 Patented My 21,1912l ,I FIGLI WITNESSES ATTORNEYS esonerav .T UnKovIcH,l or HOMER CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE JURKOvIon, a subject of the Kingof Hungary, residing at Homer. City, in the county of Indiana -and State of Pennsylvania-have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements 1n l' Wrenches of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to .the
accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a wrench with jaws, either of which can be adjusted, and the wrench manipulated with one or both hands, whereby considerable leverage can be obtained for rotating a nut or other object.
Another object of this inventionis to provide a wrench similar to 1 a pipe threader,
the wrench having jaws that can be simul-` taneously adjusted and retained -in engagement with a nut whereby the wrench will not slip when in use.l
A further object of this invention is to accom lish the aboveresults by a strong, durab e, inexpensive and highly eiiicient tool for rotating a nut or other object.
VVitlnthe above and other objects 'in View, the invention resides in the novel construetion, combination and arrangement of parts .to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had ing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench partly broken away and partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same,
to the drawpartly broken away and partly in section,
are'held by the bars 1 through the medium of screws 3 or other fastening means. The
blocks 2 and 3V are located at the ends of the bars l and said blocks areprovided [with o enings 4 for a purpose that will hereina ter appear. v
The confronting sides of the bars 1 areY provided with longitudinal grooves 5, said grooves having open ends at one end' of .each bar and the o posite endiof the .grooves closed by the en s of the bars 1, as best shown-in Fig. 1' of the drawing. The open ends of the grooves 5 are closed by detach- Specification of Letters Patent.

able plates 6 secured to theends of the bars 1 by screws 7 or other fastening means. .It is through the medium of the detachable plates 6 that the parts of the wrench can be easily and quickly assembled.
Slidably mounted upon the bars 1 are double gripping jaws 8, said jaws having channel-shaped' slots 9 to receivethe bars 1, theslots 9 being arranged in parallelism, the
walls of'said slots firmly support the jaws-8 As the adjusting` relatively to the `bars 1. mechanism in said jaws are identical, I deem it only necessary to describe the adjusting mechanism of one of said awswith particular reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Revolubly heldfby the ends of the bars 1 is the peripheral iiange 10 of a tubular handle 11, saidfhandle having the inner walls thereof screw threaded, as at 12.` Se'- cured in the handle 11 and extending through the opening 4L of the block 2 is a screw 13, said screw having' a smooth end 14 provided with an annular groove 15. The smooth end of the screw 15 extends into a socket 16 provided therefor in the jaw 8. The jaw 8 is provided with a screw or pin 17 that extends into the annular groove 15.
of the screw 13, whereby the smooth end of the screw will be rigidly held in engagement with the jaw 8. Encircling the screw 13, between the jaw 8 and 'the block 2, is a coiled compression spring 18 for binding the threadsof the screw 13 in the tubular handle 11 thereby preventing the accidental rotation of the latter.
The jaws 8 are rectangular in plan and present two sets of gripping surfaces, whereby either set of gripping surfaces can be used. for gripping a nut or other object. It is only necessary to revolve the tubular handle 11 whichengaging with the screw 13 within said handle, will separate the jaws 8 or move the jaws together, as occasion may demand. /Vhen the jaws 8 are placedin engagement with the facets. of a nut, vthe wrench can be operated by one hand or manipulated similar to a pipe threading device,
` in which instance both hands are used.
scope of the appended claims, A
,'said bars jaws slidably mounted upon said bars, said jaws being oppositely disposed, a tubular handle revolubly'suppcrted upon the flanges of said bai-s, screws adjustably mounted in said handle and extending through the openings of said blocks and rigidly connected to said jaws, and coiled com# pression springs encircling said screws between said blocks and said jaws.
2. A wrench comprising parallel bars having flanged ends, blocks connecting the ends of said bars and provided with openings and further spaced from said flanges, oppositely disposed jaws slidably mounted uponV said bars, oppositely disposed tubular handles revolubly supported upon the j flanges of said bars, and oppositely disposed screws adjustably mounted in said handles prising parallel bars having confronting faces thereof provided with grooves, sai bars having flanged ends blocks arranged at the ends of said bars and connected thereto, said blocks having openings formed therein and -spaced from said flanges, oppositely disposed jaws slidably mounted upon said bars and extending into the grooves thereof, oppositely disposed tubular handles revolubly supported by the flanges of the ends of said bars, and screws adjustably mountedin said tubular handles and extending through the openings ofl said blocks and havin the ends thereof rigidly connected to said jaws. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
