To ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that we, JONAS E. GRNLUND, and ADOLPH GRNLUND, subjects of the King of Sweden, residing at Morgan Fark, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Currycombs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to currycombs and more particularly to an improved cleaner for the teeth thereof.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which is simple in construct-ion, practical and effective in its operation, and further providing a currycomb which can be readily stamped and formed from sheet metal, by suitable dies and formers especially designed and constructed for the purpose.

Another object of the invention is in the provision of a yielding spring actuated handle, one end of which is fixed to the body portion of the currycomb, and having its opposite free end movably located within said body portion for operating the combs to and from yieldingly fixed cleaning jaws, whereby t-he teeth of the combs are relieved of the hair and other accumulation removed from the animal in currying the same, by compressing t-he handle while the currycomb is in the hand of the operator.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the housing of the currycomb, showing the means for holding and guiding the combs. Fig. t is a perspective of one of the U-shaped members forming the combs. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the cleaning members detached from the housing. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the cleaning members and combs cooperating therewith.- Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the same with parts broken away.

Referring to the dra-wings, 1 represents a rectangular shaped housing which forms the body portion of the currycomb, the opposite side walls of said housing being turned at right angles to the top of the same and having similar end walls 2, the edges of which extend beyond the edges of the side walls and are formed inwardly to form yielding contacting and cleaning jaws 3.

The handle 4 for the currycomb is provided with a forked end 5 which is properly secured to the top of the housing 1, said iandle being also composed of a. single piece of metal properly formed, with a recurved portion 6 located below the upper portion of the handle, the free yielding lower eX- tension thereof passing freely through an enlarged opening 7 formed in the rear Wall of the housing, whereby the terminal end of the handle is centrally and yieldingly held within the housing in an inclined position in respect to the same.

Secured to the inclosed free portion of the handle t are two U-shaped members 8 which are properly separated from one another, the edges of said members being serrated to form teeth 9, whereby parallel combs are provided, the opposite parallel fiat walls of which are adapted to contact with the yielding cleaning aws in a manner to be hereinafter described.

The cleaning U-shaped members 10 are formed from a single piece of metal, the contacting edges of which are turned inwardly and toward the combs of the U-shaped members 8, the said cleaning members beingthus held within the housing 1 by rods 11 which pass through suitable openings formed for their reception in the opposite end walls, and through similar openings in said members, the rods referred to also passing through vertically disposed slots 12 formed in the combs adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, thus permitting the said combs to be moved to and from the top of the housing and within the latter when the handle is compressed by the hand of the operator.

By referring particularly to Fig. 2 0f the drawings it will be seen that when the handle 4 is in its normal position the fiat surfaces of the combs will `be in Contact with the cleaning jaws projecting toward the outer end of the housing, and that when the said handle is compressed the opposite flat sides or surfaces of the combs will be brought in contact with the oppositely arranged edges of the cleaning jaws, which operation is caused by the angular or inclined position of the free portion of the handle 4.

By constructing and arranging the parts as above described it will readily be seen that when the combs are in their normal positions for currying an animal the teeth thereof will project a sufficient distance beyond the cleaning jaws and in an inclined position in respect to housing, and in contact with the jaws previously referred to', and out of contactwith the opposite jaws, whereby it is evident that when the handle 4 is compressed for cleaning the teeth of the combs the spaces between jaws will not become clogged, and the accumulations removed from the animal will be readily forced from the teeth of the combs.

The U-shaped comb members 8 are provided with elongated centrally arranged slots 13, and secured to said members and in communication with said slots are clips 14 forming guideways for adjustably securing the said members in their proper position upon the inclosed yielding portion of the handle, the said clips being properly depressed as shown at 15 providing a suiiicient amount of friction for holding the comb members in their proper position in respect to the cleaning aws.

lf desired the outer contacting cleaning jaws may be curved inwardly, and have their edges serrated to provide teeth which are adapted to pass between the teeth formed on the combs, when the handle 4 is compressed, whereby the serrated edges of the combs are more thoroughly cleaned.

It will be apparent that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing` from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

It is evident that by the construction of the U-shaped comb members 8, and their detachable connection with the free end of the handle as shown and described, the said comb members are interchangeable, which feature is of importance in order to prolong t-he life and durability of the currycomb.

What is claimed is:

1. A curry comb, comprising a housing having depending flanges terminating in inturned edges, rods connecting the said flanges, U-shaped members secured on the said rods and having outwardly flaring edges, a resilient handle member having one end reversely bent, one of the flanges of the housing having a slot formed therein into which the end of the handle extends, a U- shaped toothed plate secured to the reversely bent end of the handle and having the toothed portions thereof depending between the U-shaped members secured on the rod` said toothed members having slots formed therein through which the rods pass, whereby compression of the handle portions toward each other will raise the toothed members upward and cause the edges of the housing and the flaring edges of the U- shaped members secured on the rod to thoroughly clean the teeth.

2. A curry comb, comprising a housing having inturned depending flanges, rods connecting said flanges, one of said flanges having an aperture formed therein, a handle having one end secured to the housing and the other reversely bent and extending inward through the aperture, toothed plates secured to the inwardly extending handle and having slots formed therein through which the rods are passed, and cleaner members secured on the rods intermediate the various toothed plates and having portions curving toward the said toothed plates to clean the same.

3. ln combination with a suitable housing, of a handle made from a single piece of metal, the lower portion of which is adapted to yield to and from the upper portion of the same, U-shaped comb members carried by the lower member of the handle and within the housing, U-shaped cleaning jaws the edges of which are turned inwardly against which the opposite sides of the combs are adapted to contact, and rods passing through suitable openings in the front and rear walls of the housing and also through openings formed inthe U- shaped cleaning members, said rods also passing through suitable slots formed in the gaged on the connecting rods and having their upper portions secured to the reversely bent end of the handle, and U-shaped cleaner members secured on the rods intermediate the toothed plates and each having their rear edge formed with teeth, the teeth of the said cleaner members and of the depending flange of the housing being staggered with respect to the teeth of the toothed plates, whereby compression of the two portions of the handle will raise the toothed plate and will cause the teeth of the housing flange and cleaners to satisfactorily remove the material from between the teeth of the toothed plates.

5. A currycomb comprising a suitable housing the end walls of which project a suitable distance to form yielding cleaning jaws, a handle in the form of a spring the end of which is recurved forming a lower inclined portion which is located within the housing, and is adapted to move to and from the top of the same, U-shaped comb members secured to the free end of the handle within the housing and properly spaced in relation to one another, U-shaped cleaning members the outer edges of which are formed outwardly providing yielding jaws, and rods passing through the front and rear walls of the housing and through openings in the cleaning members, said rods also passing through suitable slots formed in the comb members adjacent to the end thereof,

whereby the said comb members are prop- 15 erly guided within the housing and limited in movement in an outward direction when the grip of the hand is released from the handle.
