FOLDING BOOKCASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. J1' uly 9, 1912.
Application led November 25, 1911. Serial No. 662,499.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAM: H. FANNING, citizen of the United States, residingat Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of rleXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding; Bookcases, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in folding bookcases, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily extended to receive the books, pamphlets and the like, and which may be folded into small space for shipment or storage.
llllith these and other objects in" view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the. preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device in open or operative position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved device in folded or closed position; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following' description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying' drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device embraces a body or casing including a top 10, bottom 11, ends 12 and back 13, the back being spaced inwardly from the rear edges of the ends top and bottom as shown. l-lingedly connected at 14 to the rear edges of the end members 12 of the body are similarly formed end members 15 which constitute the end meinbers of a bookcase. The top 16 of the book! case is hingedly united at 17 to the top 10 of the casing', while the bottom member 18 of the bookcase is hingedly united at 19 to the bottom 11 of the body. A Iplurality of shelves 20 are hingedly united at 21 in the projecting' portions of the ends 12 of the body so that the shelves will fold against the back 13 and within the rearwardly projecting portions of the body. 'lhe ends of the book shelves when released, fold against the ends 12 of the body, the top 16 of the book shelf portion of the device when released folds over the top 10 of the body, and the bottom 1S of the book shelf portion of the device, folds beneath the bottom 11 of the casing. By this simple means it will be noted that the body together with its bookcase attachments, are foldable into a small space for convenience when shipping and storing'. The shelves 20 are united at their ends in any suitable manner to the end members 15 of the bookcase portion of the device, as for instance by screws 22, so that by simply detaching the screws the bookcase portions may be folded into close relations to the body. f
The body port-ion of the device may be provided with a foldable desk 23 and compartments 24 and 25 as shown. rlhe compartment 211 contains a scroll 26 operating' over rollers 217-23 to contain drawing' lessons, writing copies, or other matter, and readable through an opening 29, the opening being provided with a sliding' cover 30. rlhe compartment 25 is supplied with a plurality of 'maps 31 or the like, mounted on rollers in position to be drawn out over the desk 23 when open. The space in the rear of the desk is occupied with a portfolio device which may be opened over the desk when the latter is in open position. The body 10 is mounted to swing;` upon a base frame represented as a whole at 33 by a pin 34, and connected to the bottom of the body 10 is a bearing' ring while an annular channel member 3G is embedded in tre upper' member of the base to support a plurality of bearing balls 37. By this means the combined bookcase and desk device is mounted for rotation upon the base. rllhe base is provided with an intermediate transverse shelf 39 and supported upon caster wheels 38. l.
The improved device may be constructed of any required size or capacity and withA any required number of shelves and with shelves of any width or size.
Having' thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. ln a device of the class described, a body including a top bottoni ends and back, extensions to the ends hingedly united thereto and corresponding` in outline to the ends and folded against the outer faces of the same, an extension to the top hingedly united thereto and foldable over the top, an extension to the bottom hingedly united thereto and foldable beneath the bottom, and a plurality of shelves hingedly connected to the body and foldable against the back.
" to the ends hingedly united thereto and cor responding` in outline to the ends and foldable against the outer faces of the same, an extension from the top and hingedly united thereto and foldable over the top, an eX- 10 tension to the bottom hingedly united thereto and Joldable beneath the bottom, and a plurality of shelves hingedly united relative to the back and foldable within the space between the back and the rear edges of the ends top and bottom.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses W. R. S'ronm,
W. C. BARRICKMAN.
