DAMPER-REGULATOR.
Application filed December 27, 1910.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC ALFRED BACK- LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Damper-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to damper regulators for steam boiler furnaces and has for its object the provision of a device that utilizes the rise and fall of the steam pressure in the boiler to open and close the damper.
To this end my invention consists in the provision of a device having a cylinder connected with the damper by means of a rope or chain, said cylinder being connected with the bottom of the boiler by means of a flexible tubular connection, so that as the pressure of steam in the boiler increases the water is driven out of the boiler through the tubular connection into the cylinder which causes it to move downwardly closing the damper, and when the pressure of the steam is relieved, the water moves back into the boiler and a weight on the damper causes it to open again.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view of a boiler furnace and flue showing my improved damper regulator associated therewith, and Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the regulating cylinder.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts in the several views.
A indicates a boiler furnace having a fine B in which is pivotally mounted a damper C having an operating arm D and a weight E secured to one side that operates to hold the damper open, normally.
F indicates a pipe tapped into the bottom of the boiler and connected to an upright pipe G having a transparent tube H secured to its upper end that is open to atmospheric pressure and acts as a gage to indicate the height of the water in the cylinder to be hereinafter described.
I indicates a cylinder secured to a rope or other flexible member J mounted on pulleys K and having its other end secured to operating arm D of the damper C. The lower end of cylinder 1 is connected with pipe Gr by means of a flexible tube L.

As shown in Fig. 2 the interior of the cylinder I is provided with a valve 0 to close the Water inlet to the cylinder and a float P that closes the air pipe M when the cylinder is full to prevent escape of the water therefrom, and also serves to hermetically seal the water inlet 0 when the cylinder is empty to prevent air getting into the boiler when the steam pressure is low enough to drain the cylinder I.
Q represents a valve in pipe F, It a valve in tube L, and S a draw-off cock in the upper end of upright pipe G to permit drawing off the water in transparent tube H and flexible tube L.
When in use as shown in Fig. 1 it will be apparent that as the temperature in the boiler A rises, so as to increase the pressure of the steam therein, the water will be driven out of the boiler by the pressure .of the steam and will flow through pipes F, G and L into cylinder I. When the weight of the water in the cylinder I added to the weight of the cylinder is sufficient to overcome the counter balance weight E the damper C will be closed and remain so until the temperature of the Water in the boiler falls sufliciently to reduce the steam pressure so that the water flows back from the cylinder I through pipes L, G and F into the boiler when the weight E will operate to open the damper and the parts will be in the position that they were when the operation was commenced.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. A damper regulator for boiler furnaces consisting of a boiler, a flue, a pivoted dam per in said flue and provided with a counterweight to hold the damper normally open, an operating arm on the damper, a flexible element secured to said arm, a cylinder suspended from said flexible element, a pipe tapped into the water area of the boiler, a
tube connecting the cylinder and the pipe tapped into the boiler, an upright pipe connected to said boiler tapping pipe, a vertical transparent tube secured to said upright pipe, a valve in said cylinder to close the water inlet, and a float in said cylinder adapted to engage said valve and seat it.
2. In a damper regulator for boiler furnaces, a boiler, a smoke flue, a damper pivoted in said flue, a counter-weight-in said flue secured to said damper, an arm secured to said damper, a flexible element secured to said arm, a cylinder attached to and suspended from said flexible element, a pipe tapped into the boiler, a flexible tube attached to said cylinder, an upright pipe connecting said flexible tube With said first mentioned pipe and a vertical transparent tube secured to said upright pipe.
3. In a damper regulator for boiler furnaces, a boiler, a flue, a pivoted damper in said flue and provided With a counter-Weight, an'operating arm on said damper, a flexible element secured to said arm, a cylinder suspended from said flexible element, a pipe tapped into the Water area of said boiler, a tube connecting said cylinder and said pipe tapped into said boiler, an upright pipe connected to said boiler tapping pipe, a vertical transparent tube secured to said upright pipe, an air pipe in said cylinder, and a float in said cylinder to close said air pipe.
