UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY JAGKMAN, 0F CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
WIRE-SPLICER.
Application filed December 19, 1911.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roy J ACKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Wire-Splicers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to wire working tools, and more particularly to the class of wire splicers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character in which wires may be spliced together for the joining thereof, the tool being capable of use as pliers or a wire cutter.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan View of one aw of the tool.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals,
the tool comprises a pair of pivotally connected handles 5 and 6, respectively, the same being formed with jaws 7, as usual, the said jaws being cut away to provide wire cutting blades 8 in alinement with each other at one side of the jaws, the outer ends of the jaws being provided at their inner faces with roughened surfaces 9, so that the jaws will firmly grip work engaged thereby, thus preventing the possibility of the slipping of the work when the jaws are gripping the same.
Formed integral with the jaws and projecting laterally therefrom, in alinement with the cut-away port-ions therein, are supplemental gripping aws or wings 10, the same being provided with channels 11, through which is passed a wire to be cut or severed by the cutting blades 8. The side walls of the supplemental wings or jaws Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16,1912.
Serial No. 666,722.
10 are provided with semi-circular recesses 12 of different sizes, each pair of a given size being disposed in alinement, in order that wires of different sizes may be readily connected during the splicing operation.
Mounted on one of the handles 5 is a plate 13, the same being formed with an eye 14, in which is engaged a pivot 15, the latter also engaging eyes 16 formed on one end of a latch bar 17, the same being bifurcated between the eyes 16 to provide a leaf spring extension 18-adapted to frictionally engage the handle 5 adjacent thereto, so as to hold the latch bar normally in open position. The other end of the latch bar 17 is formed with a substantially oval-shaped head 19 containing a slot or opening 20, in which is adapted to be engaged the end of the other handle 6, so as to sustain the jaws 7 in closed position for the gripping of a wire or wires, or for closing the supplemental jaws or Wings 10 upon a wire or wires for the splicing thereof.
It is evident that the tool may be used as pliers or a Wire cutter, as well as for the splicing of wires.
WVhat is claimed is:
A tool of the class described, comprising a pair of pivotally connect-ed handles having gripping jaws, wire splicing jaws projecting i laterally from the first-mentioned jaws and having internal channels in alinement with each other for receiving a wire or wires, the side walls of the wire splicing jaws being provided with transverse notches of different sizes with respect to each other and adapted to register with each other on the closing of the jaws, cutting blades formed on the firstmentioned jaws and disposed transversely of the channels formed in said splicing jaws, a locking bar hinged t-o one of said handles and having aslotted head engaging with the other handle, and a spring tongue out from the locking bar and engageable with the handle adjacent thereto for normally holding the locking bar in open position.-
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
