To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pn'rnn Lone, resident of the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in valves, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel means employed whereby the valve is held fluid tight in its closed position by metal to metal joints.
The objects of the invention are to devise a valve which will entirely obviate the necessity of any form of replaceable packing, to form the valve entirely of permanent pieces. and generally to provide in such devices a construction which will be cheap to manufacture and economical in regard to its maintenance.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of this form of valve, applied to a globe valve of a heating system. Fig. 2
is a cross sectional view on the line CD in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line AB in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of this valve applied to a faucct and showing the valve in modified form which may also be applied to the globe cas ing of a valve and heating system.

7 is a disk or plate valve having the inwardly inclined surface 8 engaging the valve seat 4 in the closed position of the valve'and the boss 9 extending upwardly from the center thereof and terminating in the ball 10.

13 is a barrel casing, having the outwardly extending flange 14 toward the lower end thereof, the external thread 15 below, said flange and corresponding to the internal thread of the neck 2 and inserted therein and the internal thread 16 for the greater portion of its length, said flange 14 being surface finished and meeting the surface finished face of the flange 3.
17 isthe reduced upper end of the barrel casing 13 formed by the squared inwardly extending shoulder 18. said reduced end on the top side being surface finished and said shoulder 18 on the inside being surface finished. It will be thus seen that the barrel casing 13 forms an entrance to the globe casing 1, the surface finished flanges 3 and 14 preventing any leakage at that joint.
19 is a plug, having the ball shaped recess 20 at the lower end thereof, corresponding to the ball 10 and into which said ball fits, being held'therein by the flange 21 extending below said plug, said plug having at the other end thereof a squared recess 22. The plug 19 is threaded correspondingly at 23 to the internal thread of the barrel casing 13 and turns therewithin. The ball 10of thevalve 7 is inserted in the recess 20 and the flange 21 is knocked over under the in ward curve of the said ball 10, so that the said ball is held within the globe shaped re cess and the valve 7 is consequently carried with the plug 19 during the travel of said plug,,a'nd a universal joint is secured bei tion of said ball in said recess.
-being surface finished and engaging the The valve 7 on its outer face, preferably has a squared recess 24, opposite a threaded opening 25 in the valve casing, but said threaded opening 25 is closed by the threaded plug 26 so that by means of this opening in the squared recess the valve face engaging the seat 4- may at any time be ground perfectly with said seat, simply by introducing some emery dust or other suitable grinding material and opening the hole 25 and then inserting a squared piece in the squared recess 24 of the valve and turning said valve, either by hand, brace-bit or other instrument. i
27 is a spindle having the flange 28 at the lower end thereof said flange having an inclined upper surface corresponding to the inclined shoulder 18 and an annular recess 28 in "said inclined surface forming a dou-' ble seat. 29 is a squared pin projecting centrally fromsaid flange 28 into the squared recess 22 in the plugs 19.

The spindle 27 is inserted through the reduced end 17 of the barrel casing 13 so that the surface finished face of the flange '28 comes in contact with the surface finished face of the shoulder 18. i
33 is a washer, having a part circular hole therethrough, the straight wall of said hole engaging the flat surface 30 of the spindle 27 and the inner end of said washer surface finished top of the reduced end 17. 34 is a nut mounted on the spindle 27 and engaging the thread 31 and tightly securing said washer 33 against the top of the reduced end 17.
In the operation of this invention, the valve is placed in any suitable position, ac-
cording to the conditions under, which it is being used, as it may be a faucet or an attachment to a heating system, 1n fact 1t 1s useful any place where a fluld valve can be operated, the only change necessary being in the arrangement of the casings. The fluid in the open position of the Valve passes through the opening surround-ed by the valve seat 4 and then through various connecting pipes. In order to close this valve, the wheel 32 is turned, or other handle, and the spindle turns with said wheel and rotates in the journal bearing formed by the reduced end 17. The squared pin 29, ex-
vtending down into the plug 19, causes said plug to turn and as this plug screws up and the inner wall of the barrel casing, abso-' lutely preclude any chance of a leakage through those parts, therefore the necessity for washers of other material softer than themetal of the valve parts is entirely avoided. I
In Fig. 4, the valve shown is applied to a faucet and is in slightly di rent arrangement, in fact it is another form of the same invention and this form may just as easily be applied elsewhere as to afaucet. 35 is a threaded opening into the tap casing corresponding to the threaded opening into the aforesaid globe casing. 36 is the plug casing corresponding to the aforesaid bar rel casing and having a similar flange 37 meeting the top of the wall of the opening 35 and the internal thread 38, said plug casing 36 having the inclined wall 39 intermediate of its length converging to the reduced upper end 40. 41 is a similar plug to that described hereinbefore and turning in the thread 38. 42 is a spindle inserted through the reduced upper end 40 and having the flange 43 at the lower end thereof annularly recessed at 44 forming theseats 45 and 46 against the surface finished inner wall of the incline 39. 47 is a squared port-ion near the top end of the spindle '42 inserted through a squared hole in the lever 48, said spindle terminating at its extreme upper end in the thread 49. 50 is a washer between the lever 48 and the top end of the reduced upper end 40. 51 is a split nut, screwing on to the thread 49 and tightened against the lever 48 being held in place by the set screw 52 inserted through the extending split lugs 53. This isa common form of nut and in itself is not claimed as novel herein but in the operation of this form of the invention the lever 48 is turned which turns the plug 41 and causes said plug to travel up and down in the casing 36, thus lifting the valve from its seat in the tap casing. The flange 43 is drawn to the inner wall of the inclined shoulder by tightening the split nut 51 against the lever or wheel 48,- thus providing an extremely simple method of holding the upper POI? tions of the device liquid tight.

In a valve, a casing having a partition therein with a central opening and sloping walls at the edge of said opening, a correspondingly formed disk or plate valve fitting to and closing said opening and having a central boss terminating in a ball, an extension screwing into said casing and form-- ing therewith a metal to metal joint and threaded in the interior thereof, a plug correspondingly th'readed and screwing in said extension having a square recess at one end thereof and a ball cavity in the other partially inclosing said ball, a stem journaled at the outer end of said extension having a flange toward the inner end thereof form- 'ing with said extension a metal to metaljoint and a square pin projecting from said flanged portion into said plug, awasher nonrotatively arranged-on said stem and forming with the end of said extension a metal to metal joint, and a nut screwing on said stem against said washer.
3. In a valve, a casing having a partition therein and an opening through said partition, said partition having a sloping wall at the edge of said opening and forming a valve seat, a valve fitting to and closing said opening having a cent 'al boss terminating in a ball, an extension screwing into said casing and having a flange, forming with said casing a metal to metal joint, and an internal thread, a plug correspondingly threaded and screwing longitudinallyin said extension and having at one end thereof a squared recess and at the other end a ball cavity and flange adapted to be knocked over and partially inclose said ball in said cavity, a-stem journaled at the outer end of said extension and having a flange fonning with the interior wall ofsaid extension a metal to metal joint, a square pin projecl ingfrom said flange into said squared recess in the plug and a flattened side beyond said extension, a washer having a corresponding opening therethrough and fitting on said stem at said flattened part and forming with the outer end of said extension a metal to metal joint, and a nut screwing on said stem and holding said washer.
4. In a valve, a casing having a partition wall therein and an opening through said partition, said opening having sloping walls forming a valve seat and straight walls lead ing from said sloping walls, a valve fitting to and closing said opening and having at one side guide legs engaging said straight walls and on the other-side a central boss terminating in a ball, an extension screwing into said casing and having a flange form- 'ing with said casing a metal-to metal oint and an internal thread, a plug screwing in said extension having at one end a squared recess and at the other end a ball cavity partially inclosing said ball, a stem having a square pin projecting into said squared rccess, a flange forming with the interior wall of said casing a metal to metal joint and a flattened side beyond said extension, a washer fitting to said flattened side and forming with said casing a metal to metal joint, and a nut holding said washer in place.
