CLARENCE B. VAN ANTH ERP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EXPANSION-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Application filed August 23, 1911. Serial N0. 645,603.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, CLARENCE B. VAN An'rwnnr, citizenof the. United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful.Improvements in Expansion-Bolts, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to improvements in expansion bolts especially adapted to be inserted in cement or other foundation adapted to cooperate with the expansible shell which forms an essential feature of devices of this character.
The especial objectof the improvements which form the subject matter of this appli: cation for patent is to provide an expansion bolt or device of economical construction and one in which the parts are easily assembled and may be held in operative relation both when detached trom the structure in which they are to be placed and when attached thereto. H
The foregoing and other objects of general novelty and utility are conserved by my improvements as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
In the accbmpanying drawing which forms a part of my application :-l* igure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, showing my improved expansion bolt in position in a suitable foundation or anchorage; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shell which forms an element of my improved device; Fig. 3 is a perspective view partly in section of the conical plug member of my invention; and Fig. t is a perspective view of the disk which formsa feature of the device.
Referring to the details of my invention, 4: represents a cylindrical shell formed of a metal adapted to stretch under tension and cast with tapering bore -l for a portion of its length and a straightbore l for the balance of its length. The walls at the inner end of the shell are thin and bent inwardly to form an. inturned annular flange 4 as shown in .l ig. l. Extending longitudinally of the shell l on opposite sides thereof are slots ll? which runfrom the inner end of the shell part way of its lengtlnsuch slots permitting the ready cxpansibility of the shell when subjected to the pressure of-the plug to be described.
Fitting snugly within the lower part or wardly and impinging bore a of the shell el, is a trunco-conical plug 5 which is formed of soft metal, with diverging notches or recesses 5" which extend from the inner end of the plug for a pow tion of the length of said plug, but do not penetrate to its bore. The purpose of these notches is to form sharp edges or shoulders 5:011 the abutting walls, which will engage the inner walls of the shell 4 and prevent the plug from turning when the bolt 8 is screwed into the plug. The bore of the plug is threaded as at 5" to receive the screw or bolt 8 which serves as the attaching means for any article or device to be anchored or secured in the foundation material 7. Before the annular flange 4 is formed on the inner end of the shell l, a thin sheet metal disk 6 is inserted within the shell and is of such diameter as to cause it to fit snugly against the inner wall of the shell and maintain its position by reason of the" contact with said walls and the holding flanged". This disk serves .the double purpose of preventing the plug from being separated from its shell while being handled and before being used, and also serves to prevent dirt from entering the shell and plug when the latter are placed in position, thus avoiding the objection due to dirt, &c., interfering with the action of the screw or bolt in the plug.
The outer portion of the wall of the shell is hollowed or thinned as at l to facilitate the expansion of the shell when pressure is exerted from within.
In the practical use or application of the device describcd, the shell 4 is inserted in a socket especially provided therefor in the foundation material 7 in which it is to be anchored. When so placed, the shell will have the plug 5 and the washer (S in their operative positions. The article or object which is to be secured or attached by the bolt 8, is then put in position, and the bolt 8 inserted in the shell and screwed into the plug 5, the latter being thereby drawn out.
against the contracted portion l of the ore of the said shell, thereby expanding the shell wall laterally against the walls of the socket in the foundation or material in which it is set.
It will be understood that the shell is cast from a more or less ductile metal alloythe shell caused by the threaded engagement between the bolt and the plug and the fact that the inner end of the bolt. impinges against the bottom of the socket in which the device is placed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new, is
Y 1. An expansion device comprising an expansible one piece non-threaded shell, a separate closure for the inner end ofsaid shell, a conical plug arranged Within said shell and adapted to expand the walls of the latter, and means for operating said plug whereby-the shell Willbe expanded.
2. An expansion device comprising a one piece non-threaded shell having a conical bore extending part Way through the shell, with slots in. its Walls, and having a flange at its inner end, a disk arranged within the flange ofsaid shell, a tapering plug arranged Wlthin the bore of said shell. and adapted to expand the Walls of the latter upon being moved longitudinally therein,
and means for longitudinally moving said plug.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 7 plug to expand thewall of said shell. 4. An expansion anchoring device comprising a cylindrical non-threaded shell having a conical bore in its inner portion and having its walls slotted andthinned for portions of their length, an internally threaded conical plug arranged Within the conical bore of the shell and having radial notches of gradually increasing Width in its walls,
and a bolt adapted to engage said plug.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
