Description
p E. G. CONNLLY, 0F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
oURvED sAsH-EOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,541, dated kFebruary 21, 1854.
declare that the following is a full and ex-` act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication.
Figures l, 2, and 3, are side elevations of a window, representing the upper and vlower sash in different positions; Figs. l
and 5, are vertical sections representing the sash in the same positions, as those shown in Figs. 2 and 3; Figs. G and 8 are sections, representing the operation of the catches upon the upper and lower sash; Figs. 9, 10, and 11 represent the catching and fastening apparatus, det-ached from the sash.
The first feature of my invention consists in giving the catch e, the'form of an annular segment or the segment of ninety degrees of a circle and placing the same in a metallic case of the same or like form. Said metallic case is placed in the stile of the sash A or B, (shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3), by forming a groove in said stile A or B, of suiiicient size to admit said metallic case or box, in such a mannen-that it is firmly secured by the sidesvand bottom of said groove, so formed. The plate C (shown in Figs.
' 1, 2 and 3, forming a part of said casing or box, forthe catch-bolt, c) is also secured, by means of two screws passing through said plate C into the sash stile A or B, forming a plane surface with the said stile. The catch or bolt c is firmly secured in said me tallic case or box, in such a' manner, that the expansion of the wood, cannot retard or obstruct said self-acting catch or bolt, e, as it inserts itself intothe recesses fn. and 9 (formed in the window casing or frame D, shown in Figs. 6 and 8) by its own gravitation, (not partaking of a lever, (which are used in constructing fastenings for window sash) having no fulcrum,) and securing the sash at any desired height. A
The casing for the catchl e, is composed of i the plate'C, and the ianches c, Z, projecting from its rear side, whichvform av channel for `the catch to play in. The handle z', projecting from the catch e, `by* which it is operated, plays V,through thefcurved slot ai, sho-wn in Fig. 9. The cover or plate M (shown in Fig. 11) is designed to fit, orbe fitted, on top, and a portion of it between the flanges la, Z, (shown in Figs. 9 and 11) inclosing the latch or bolt e, forming a perfect case or The catch or bolts e, are shown in Figs. 6 and 8 as having passed into the recesses n, and r. The said recesses or notches, can be formed in any desired position, in the Window casing or frame D, (shown in Figs. 6 and 8.)
The second feature of my invention, consist-s in the extreme simplicity, durability, and cheapness, of m or said, sash fastening or lock; being suita le to any sash, and not liable to get out of order.
Having fully described the nature of my invention, therefore what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent;.is-
1. The combination of the gravitating catch or bolt (e) with the metallic case or box; giving said catch (e) the form of an` annular segment, or the segment of ninety degreesof a circle, combined with said metallic case of similar form; constructed and soV applied y,in such a manner, that the expansion of the wood cannot retard or obstruct said catch or bolt (e) as it inserts itself l into the recesses or notches in the frame D.
2. I do not claim the recesses or the mabut the construct-ion, formation, and application, of said metallic case, and catch (e) substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
The above specification of my new and useful improvement in operating and fasten- 'ing window sash signed this 31st day of` terial, of the metallic case, or the catch e;k
