LID-OPERATING DEVICE FOR CABINETS OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed July 25, 1912. Serial No. 711,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. SCHWARTZ and ALBERT C. Bxnooox, citizens of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Jefierson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Operating Devices for Cabinets or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates especially to lid operating devices for boxes, cabinets and the like, and although it is capable of use for various other purposes, it is designed particularly for use in connection with cabinets for containing tubs, barrels or the like in stores. Many packages containing articles to be dispensed are unsightly and unsanitary. The present invention provides a cabinet for containing such a package, with a lid operated by a treadle so that it may be opened or closed by the foot of the clerk or operator, leaving his hands free for other purposes.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 9. is a horizontal section.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a box or cabinet which will be made of proper size and shape to inclose the tub, barrel, can or other package, such a tub being indicated at 7. The box is provided with a hinged lid 8.
The lid opening device comprises a treadle 9 connected by a rod 10 to one arm of a bell crank 11. These parts are preferably located near the front edge of one side of the box, so as to be in convenient position for operation. The rod slides up and down under a guide 12. The lever is pivoted to the side of the box at 13, and its other arm is connected by a rod 14 to a crank arm 15 projecting from one end of a crank rod 16 which extends across the top of the box and is journaled in brackets 17 fastened to opposite sides of the box. The middle part of the rod 16 is bent as indicated at 18 to form a crank and is folded upon itself as indicated at 19 to produce an arm projecting from the point of the crank and adapted to slide under a stra 20 attached to the underside of the lid 8. The pivotal axis of the crank is located slightly in front of the hinges of the lid and the arm 15 is so located that it will swing beyond center in either direction when the lid is to be opened or closed. In Fig. 1 the lid is shown in open position. By pressing down on the treadle 9 the crank rod 16 is turned, swinging the lid forwardly be yond center after which it will drop by its own weight to closed position, the arm 15 swinging downwardly and backwardly and lifting the treadle 9. Vhen the lid is closed, by pressing down on the treadle 9 the arm 15 swings forwardly and upwardly, lifting the lid to position beyond center after which it drops back to open position, again raising the treadle for the next closing operation.
The cabinet may be made without a bottom so that it can be placed over the tub or package. Or it may be made with a bottom, in which case the package can be placed inside, or the cabinet can be used as a receptacle for ashes, garbage and other material.
It will be noted that the lid operating devices can be worked entirely by foot pressure, which is convenient for use in stores, leaving the hands of the clerk free to take material from the package, and the cabinet serves to exclude dust, flies and the like from the package.
e claim:
1. The combination of a treadle, a lid, a crank shaft connected with the lid to operate the same and movable off the center in one direction to open the lid and in the other direction to close the lid and intermediate devices between the shaft and treadle including a bell crank lever, all substantially as described, whereby the treadle may be operated to open the lid and to close the same and the said treadle will occupy substantially the same position both when the lid is open and when it is closed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a casing, a hinged lid therefor and a crank shaft extending beneath the lid and journaled to the casing, the said crank shaft having beneath the lid be obscured thereby, and means for rocking the crank shaft, substantially as set forth. GEORGE A. SCHW ARTZ. AL ERT C. BABCOCK.
a crank ai'in slidably engaged with the lid In presence of at the underside of the latter whereby when J. B. Moss, the lid is closed, the shaft and its arm will M. C. LETT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
