JOHN W. HELDER, OF SHANNON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'TO HIMSELE AND LUTHER TRESOO'IT, OE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 106,694, dated August 23, 1870.
Y The Schedule referred to in these Lett-ers Patent and making part of the same. m
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN AW. HELDER, of Shanfnonj, in the county of Carroll and State ot' Illinois, have invented a newandimproved Machine for Outting Slatsfor \Vindow-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that thc v,following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference boinghad to the accompanying' drawing fm'ming a part of this specification, in which l Figure l is a'sectional elevation, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the under side of the machine.
This invention has for its object to cnt from a piece of wood of any dimensions asplnt or slat of the propel' width and thickness, such slatpassing oi' through the stock in the same way that shavings are cominctedV away in an ordinary plane.
In the drawing- A is the stock.
a, thel handle by which it is shoved. l
b, a block, placed in a recess in the stock, said block being combined with a spring plate, c,sunk in a groove in its lower side, attached to the block by a set-screw,
r1, passing through a slot in the spring, and regulated at its front or lower end byl a set-screw, e, passing downward through the block.
f is" thc knife that cuts ot the splint, which knife lies on the bottom of the recess in the block b, its sharp end projecting below the bottom of -the block, and a space being left between the knife and springplate o for the slat to pass through, the distance between the cutting-edge of t-he knife and the lower end of the spring-plate being regulated by means of a setserew, h, passing through the side of thestook Aand bearing aga-inst the knife, t-his arrangement enablin'g thev operator to make the thickness of the splint according t'o his pleasure.
Ii is a plate, jointed to the. top of' the stock, and combined with a setescrew passing vertically through the plate ri, by which the block b is held down when the plate 'i is turned over it, the block i) being removable when the plate t' is turned away from above it.
7.: is a knife, placed vertically in the stock A, forward of the knife j, and governed by a set-screw, l', by which the knife It may be made to project below the bottom of the stock A more or less, according to the thickness of the splint, the function of the knife k being tocntthe board to the width of the slut.
l is a plate, attached to the bottom of the stock A,
,and rendered movable by means of set-screws m m, so
as to regulate the width of the slat.
In cutting out slats the bottom of the stock is placed on the top of the board, the edge of the board being next `to the edge of the plate e; 'lhe stock is shoved forward, the gauge k makes a scam in tbe hoard, and the knife f takes up the slat, which passes ott' between the knife k and spring plate c, the latter serving to prevent the slat from splitting it passes ont.
Having thus described my invention,`
Vhat I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters'Patent7 islhe splint-plane herein described, consisting of the stock A, block b, clamp t', plate c, cutter j; adjustingscrew o, adjustable guide-plate l, and gauge la, as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN W. HELDER.
Witnesses MATTHEW ItmDnE,I LUTHER TnnscoTT.
