IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES;

'.llhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whoiat may concern:

. Be it known that I, LESTER PHILIPS, of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Olaire,.and State of Wisconsin,

have invented a new arid useful Ilnprovenient in Felices;

and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the al't to make and use the Sallie, reference being had to tlic'acconi pan yin g drawingforming part of this specification.

The posts A,for t-hecontinnous fence, are iliade of one piece of board, preferably of the saline width aiid thickness as the longitudinal boards B.. Tliey are pivoted at the bottoni between two horizontal supportviiig-boards, C, of like character, by pills D. Thesev boards C have, near the ends, short blocks, E, pinned between Vthem, and they are snpportcd'abovc the ground by the shortstakes F, driven into the ground, and passing between the boards at the ends, where they arel nailed or pinned together at G, the said stakes risingabove the boards sufficiently to be driven again when the ends in the ground rot o, the nails or piiis at G being ,first withdrawn, aiid the parts being again nailed or pinned.

For' ruiming a fence up or dowli hill, the posts A may be set vertically, alid the boards B may be arranged obliqnely in thev posts, the walls of the ends of the liiortises being niade oblique for the purpose.

'employ double posts, L, connected to the base-boards G of one of the posts A, as shown, and to the post at the topby a short board, M.

For fences crossing each other, two of these posts L are used, one on each side of the post.A, as shown. 'The boards Bare connected to these end posts L by pins, N, passing through the-ends, which are placed between the tivo boards which forni the posts. This connection adlnits of arranging the boards Bobliquely to the posts for uneven ground. l v

The posts may have caps, Q, placed on the tops, as shown, to prevent tlieni from splitting.

It will be seen that this improved construction provides a felice wellvailapted for anyvsurface, whether level or not; also, that it is cheap aiid durable.

Having thus described iny invention,
