I, SA1irrJ'1r.I'. Eoonns, .of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State ot` Pennsylvania, have invented an improvement in Winding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

General Description.
A is the frame `ot' the machine, in suitable bearings, on which revolves the pulley a of one of a series of horizontal spindles, E, each of which, on the latter, passes a belt, D, round' the pulley a of a horizontal spindle, E, which turns iu bearings on the top of thel frame, and to the end of which is tted the detachable tapering tubeF, for receiving the yarn from one 'of `a series of bobbins,
- lThrough the medium of a belt or suitable gearing, motion is communicatedfrom the shaft B toa shaft, H-,`to which, below eachspindle E, is secured ,an eccentric, I, the latter serving toimpart a horizontal reciprocating motion to thevguided sliding bar J, which carries the thread-guideb, and to which is hung loosely a pawl, el, the outer end of the latter being arranged to slide'freely on the edge of a ro'd, e, which carries at its outer end the trigger K; and being jointed at its opposite end to a curved arm, M, hung loosely to the frame at rv, the lower end of the said arm having v,di Toller, h, which, under the circumstances described hereafter, will tighten the belt D by forcing it to the position shown in iigs. 1 and 4, between the drum O and a roller, i, arranged to revolve in stationary bearings. y The rod e has in its under'edge a notch, m,.for catching onto a stationary pin, n, on the 'frame of the machine.
The yarn y passes from the bobbin G over the lower pin j) of the trig er K,round the upper pin q of the saine totheguide b,-and thence to thetapering tube F of the spindle As this spindle revolves rapidly, a slow reciprocating motion :is imparted to thesliding bar J, and its guide b, directs. the yarn as it is wound round the y tube F. There is always sufficient tension onthe yarn, as long as it remains entire, Yto maintain the trigger K I lin the inclined position shown in Ag.' 1, where it is free from contactlwith the pawl d, as the latter traverses to and fro; therefore, with "the sliding bar J the arm M remains undisturbed, and continues, by its. own weight, to-niaintaiu the belt D tight.
Should the yarn break, however, the trigger-'will at once fall to the, position shown in iig. 4so as to be within'therange ot' the reciprocating pawl`or traverse motion d, and the latter, as 'the sliding bar J moves in the direction wof the arrow, (lig. 4,) will come in contact withthe end of the trigger, and will, through the mediunrof the rod e, `elevate-the arm M, as shown in lig. 3, so that its roller ceases to bear on the belt D, and therlatter ceases to be the medium of turning the spindle. Owing to the notch m in the rod e catching on the stationary pin n, -the arn'M is maintained in the position shown infig. 3 until the yarn is p'ieced4 and properly adjustedto the trigger, when, by raising the rod e free from the pin n, the arm may be restored to its original position, the belt being there'- by tightened and the spindle Ecaused to revolve as before. y
Inasmueh as mechanism of the character' above described vis connected with each spindle, it is appa# rent that the stopping-oi` any single spindle; on'thef breaking of athread will not interfere with the operations of the other spindles.
I t will be seen that, inasmuch as the spindlesvai'e arranged in' ahorizontal position, --and the bands D are vertical, or nearly so, the removal' ot' the rollerV h from a band will canse the latter to slackeu and hang below the drum B, touching the same onlyat two points, so that the revolution of the bandceaseson the instant the roller h is withdrawn.
By this arrangement the automatic brakes forstop-A ping the spindles, which are required in .machines having horizontal'bands, may be -dispensed with,` the wearing of the `belt is prevented, land the ma-v chine is rendered lunch less complicated ih its construction.
