Letters Patent No. 110,219, dated December 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHELL-FUSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES EGGO, of J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New J erscy, havcinvented anew and useful Improvement in Fuse for Rifle-Shells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clcar, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying. drawing forming part of this specification, in which-- I Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal section of my improved fuse,
Figure 2is a view of the inner end of the same, the plug being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fuse for rifle-shells, which shall be so constructed as to insure certainty of explosion and entire safety in transportation and handling, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction and manufacture; and
It consists in the construct-ion and combination of various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the stock, upon the outer surface of the outer part of which is formed a screw-thread to enable it to be screwed into the shell in the ordinary manner.
The outer end of the stock A is made close, with a flange to overlap the scam or joint, and with notches or holes to receive the wrench for screwing itiu and out of the shell.
The inner end of the stock A is made open, and is closed with a screw-plug, B, which is made with holes or notches to receive the wrench for screwing it in and out.
G is the plunger, which is made hollow, and is provided with a nipple at its outer end to receive a cap to cause the shell to be exploded when it strikes, by the forward movement of the plunger 0, causing the cap to strike against the closed outer end of the stock A.
The inner end of the stock A is notched or slotted transversely, to receive the ends of the hollow or tubular bar D, with the center of which is connected the inner end of the short tube E.
The ends of the bar D may be closed by a paper patch, a slight wooden plug, or other suitable means, to confine the powder until ignited. I
The outer end of the tube E is flattened, and containsa fulrninate to be ignited by friction.
The device D E is conuectedwith the plunger 0 by a wire, F, one end of which issecnrely attached to the said plunger 0, and its other end passes-through the tube E.
The outer end of the wire E is flattened and roughened or barbed, so'that when drawn through the tube E by the-forward movement of the plunger 0, it may ignite the fuhnina-te in the said tube E by friction, and thus explode the shell. l y
The screw-plug B has a hole formed through it-to receive the tube E-and protect it.
G is the safety-pin, which passes in through a screwhole-.in the outer closed end of the stock A in such a position that its forward end may rest against the end of the plunger 0, at the side of the cap-nipple, and thus hold the said plunger securely in place dun ing transportation and handling, and absolutely secure the shell from being exploded by an accidental blow, jar, or fall. v
The screw-pin G is removed when the shell is put into the gun to be fired.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The improved fusefor rifle-shells herein described, composed of the screw-stock A, closed at its outer end, the hollow screw-plugs B and C, tubular bar D, short tube E, and wire F, all relatively con structcd, arranged as shown and described.
2. The safety-pin G, passing in through the closed outcrend of the stock A, with its inner end resting against the end of the plunger 0, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
