Be it known that I, WiLLrAM yBnirrrrono- MEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,rhave invented certain new"l and useful Improvements in Knockdown Renewable Vashing-Cylinders, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawing. t
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washing cylinders and has for its object, the provision of knock-down renewable washing cylinder which is so constructed that the same can be readily taken apartand packedV for shipping and one which when set up, can be readily repaired such as Ioy the replacing of a staveor any partsthereof very readily.
Another object of the invention is to pro-` vide a washing cylinder having metal heads. and head plates carrying the'ribs and staves which are so mounted that when the staves andribs swell by the action of the water, an
exceedingly tightr jointwill be formed be tween the heads, staves a'nd ribs in order to prevent leakage and injury to the goods being washed. l
A further object of the invention is to in orderV to prevent the same from swelling by the action of the water in order to maintain the cylinder in proper form at all times, so that the same will'be perfectly balancedr in order to allow thefsame to rotate freely.
Another object of the invention is to'provide an improved construction of hooptlghtening means for holding the staves and ribs in position upon the heads in such a manner thatby loosening the tension means, a stave" or-rib can be readily removed and a new one inserted. l

employ a pair of heads 1 .formed exactly alike, the description of oneebeing suflicient for both; each head comprisinga hub por` tion 2 having radiating therefrom, spokes terminating in sockets 4 yfor the purpose hereinafter fully described. "lhe spokes are y connected together by an intermediate rim portion 5 whereby a complete head is formed of a casting. Mounted within the rib sockets t are ribs 17 having reduced ends 18 which arev seated within the sockets 4 and are secured therein by bolts 19 extending through the ribs andv apertures formed in the bottoms of the sockets aso as to securely lock lthe ribs to the heads. The spokes 3 are enlarged as shown at 20 in order to allow the bolts to be readily manipulated by a suitable tool.
Arranged on the rim portions 5 between the ribs are perforated staves`21, the ends of which are reduced' forming shoulders to prevent longitudinal movement between the heads, and it will be seen that the reduced portion of the ribs also prevents longitudinal'inovement of the ribs between the heads and as shown in the drawing, the ribs are of greater thickness than the staves iniorderto p form an exceedingly i strong cylinder, the reduced portions at the ends of the ribs and vstaves'being in proportion in order to `formr a smooth exterior and interiorpto the cylinder;
The staves are secured in position upon the rim by rivets'or bolts. 22 as herein shown, but as will be later described, these are not essential as I provide means for securing the staves upon the rim without directly fastening each stave which will securely hold the staves in position. y v
Arranged within the cylinder against each head is a head plate 23 preferably formed of brass having peripheral notches 24 adapted to embrace the inwardly projecting portions of the ribs 17 said inwardlyprojecting portions of the ribs beingkerfed as shown at 24to receive the marginal edge of the notch of the head plate. rIlhe staves 21 are also kerfed adjacent the shoulder formed by the reduced portion as shown at 25 to receive the peripheral edge of the 'head plates 23 and it will be seen that by this manner of mounting the staves and ribs upon the head plate, the head plate will be embedded within the staves and ribs so that when the wood swells by the action of thepwater, an exceedingly tight joint will be formed between the head plates, staves and ribs in order to prevent any leakage, and 'at the same ktime to form an exceedingly smooth joint so as to'prevent injury to the goods being washed.
Arranged over the staves and ribs at each endvof the cylinder, is a hoop 26 provided with an aperture in which is mounted a bolt 27 adapted to extend through the aperture 8 of the depression 7 ofthe enlarged portion 6 of the rim; said bolt carrying a nut 28 by means of which, the portion of the hoop over the depression 7 can be drawn within the depression in order to place the hoop under tension so as to securely hold the same in positionupon the cylinder, and it will'be seen by this manner of connecting tions are dispensedwith `and means is provided for placing the binding hoops under 'tension quickly and in such a mannerthat:

The enlarged portion 6 of the heads are of such a size that the peripheral edge thereof will be flush with the outer faces of the ribs and staves, and arranged between these enlarged portions is a door Q9 whichis connected to one of the adjacent ribs by hinges 30 and the free edge thereof is seated in a rabbet 31 formed in the opposite rib as clearly shown in Fig. 9, in order to form a tight joint between the edges of the door and the cylinder. The door 29 is 4formed of perforated staves and a non-perforated stave which are carried by hoop sections as shown, the end hoop sections 32 being formed double by bending the same vso as to form a space for receiving the staves and terminating in pro-- jecting en ds 33 which engage the outer faces ofy the 4rabbeted rib. The cylinder is pro-V `35 at one end adapted to co-act with thel adjacent hoop so as' to lock the door when it is forced into closed position and the latch is preferably formed ofa bolt having a projection 36 for operating the same.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen thatI have provided a washing cylinder in .which metal heads are formed for the wooden stavesand ribs which can be held in position thereon without the use of bolts by the tension hoops but ink exceedingly large cylinders, it is necessary to secure the staves by boltsI as shown in the drawing. But, I do not wish to Vlimit myself tothe securing of the staves to the rim of the head, as 'I have found that under ordinary conditions, the' staves will be held in their proper position as they are prevented from moving longitudinally in either direction between the heads and that fastening the ribs in the rib sockets of the heads by bolts, a cylinder is formed vwhich is exceedingly strong and durable.
Iy claim:
1. A knock-down washing cylinder comprising heads provided with detachable trunnions, said heads being provided with rib sockets, ribs connecting said heads seated in said sockets, bolts extending transversely through said sockets and ribs, staves arranged between said ribs, and hoops surrounding said ribs and staves.
