- My present invention relates to cabinet drawers, and its objects are to provide an improved means for preventing injury to the contents of such a drawer due to their engaging the cabinet frame as the drawer is opened and closed; further to provide improved means for preventing the displacement of the contents of such drawer by their slipping or being forced over the rear end of the drawer; and further to provide an improved automatically-acting cover to protect the contents of such a drawer from dust, etc, when the drawer is closed.

To all whom it may concern:
- Be it knownthat I, DWIGHT S. Gonna citizen of the United .States, residing at GrandRapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to cabinet drawers, and its objects are to provide an improved means for preventing injury to the contents of such a drawer due to their engaging the cabinet frame as the drawer is opened and closed; further to provide improved means for preventing the displacement of the contents of such drawer by their slipping or being forced over the rear end of the drawer; and further to provide an improved automatically-acting cover to protect the contents of such a drawer from dust, etc, when the drawer is closed. These and any other objects appearing hereinafter are attained by, and my invention finds a preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a cabinet frame having drawers to which my invention is applied; and taken on a plane corresponding to line C-D of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken on a plane corresponding to line AB of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of means whereby the traveling bands are attached to the drawer; Figs. 4 and 5 are like views of variant means for the same purpose; Fig. 6 is a like view of a pulley carrying such traveling bands; Fig. 7 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a variant form of my invention and taken on a plane corresponding to line GH of Fig. 8: Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the same taken on a plane corresponding to line EF of Fig. 7 Fig. 9 is a view in perspective of a pulley carrying the traveling band and illustrating a variant form of axial support therefor: Fig. 10 is a top plan view of a guide for the drawer contents; Fig. 11 is a vertical sectional view of the same on a plane corresponding with line KL of Fig. 10; and Fig. 12 is a plan view of a non-rotatable support on which the traveling band moves in opening and closing the drawer.
My device may be applied to any suitable cabinet work or cabinet frame 1, having drawers, as 2, 3, 4, 5,-all of any wellknown form of construction.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914:.
I provide a broad band 6as illustrated in Fig. 7, or a plurality of parallel narrow bands 7 as shown in Fig. 1, where three such narrow bands appear. These are essentially jendlcss belts having a reciprocating, instead of a continuous rotary movement, on suitable supports on the frame 1 abovethe drawer. These supports may be non-rotatable, (thebands slipping freely over them), as shown at 8 in Fig. 12: preferably however, theyare rotatable pulleys 9 as shown in the other views. Where a plurality of parallel bands are used, they may all travel 011 one such pulley as shown at the left of Fig. 1 or each may run on its own separate pulley as illustrated at the right of that figure. Various forms of axial supports 10 for the pulleys may be adopted as convenience may suggest, as the form shown in Fig. 6 for attachment to the rear inside Wall of the frame; or the form shown in Fig. 9 for attachment to the inner side walls thereof.
The band is attached at one point to the drawer, so that as the drawer is opened or closed the band travels with the drawer, running over the pulleys. This attachment may be variously effected: The band may be cut transversely and one end thereof fastened to the inner rear wall of the drawer, the other end being attached to a tightening member 11 adapted to be adjusted relatively to the other end, as by screws 12, in order to vary the bands tension, all as shown in Fig. 5: Or, one end of the band, as shown in Fig. 4, or each end as illustrated in Fig. 3, may be fastened to a leaf spring 13 in order to yieldingly maintain the tension on the band.
Where a narrow band or a plurality thereof as shown in Fig. 1, are employed, the contents of the drawer may rise at the sides of such band or bands sufficiently to require their depression at such places to or below the middle of the forward pulley. To effect this depression I employ a fixed guide or guides 14 of suitable form and secured to the cabinet frame, as shown in.
Figs. 10 and 11. It will be seen that these guides are adapted to depress the drawers contents below the axis of the forward pulcontact with the drawer above or with the cabinet frame, especially the front trans verse member 16 thereof, thus protecting them from mutilation or like damage in the opening movement of the drawer; and yet, when the drawer is open the contents are automatically uncovered and released from my bands, being fully exposed to view; and they may be as easily and quickly with drawn as if my device was not applied to the drawer. Further, when the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is employed, the connection of the wide reciprocating band 6 to the rear wall of the drawer effectively prevents the sliding of any portion of the contents over such rear wall: Also, when this construction is employed,the wide re ciprocating band automatically covers the contents of the drawer and protects the same from dust, etc., when the drawer is closed, but this cover is automatically removed by the opening movement of the drawer.

2. In a device of the character described, a cabinet frame, a drawer in the'frame,a belt having a reciprocating movement on supporting members carried by the frame over the drawer, the belt being connected to the rear of the drawer to efiect sucn movement by the opening and closing of the drawer, and so arranged relatively to the drawer that only that part of the'belt which moves in the drawers direction of movement can engage the drawers contents.
