To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Ci'I'ARLEs F. FREDE, a citizenof the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Body-Bolsters for Tank-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bolster of my'improved construction. Fig...2 is an elevational view of the bolster combined with the center sills of an under-frame, said sills being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end elevational View of the bolster. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken transversely through the center ofthe bolster of my improved construction.
My invention relates generally torailway car body bolsters and more particularly to a bolster of the separable type which is specially designed for' use in tank cars, although with slight structural changes and modification of details, bolsters embodying my invention can be employed in the construction of various types of cars.
There body holsters of the separable type are combined with center sills of an underframe, it is very desirable that close contact or tight joints be made between the parts of the bolster and the top and bottom surfaces of the center sills, and with this and other objects in view, I propose to provide a two part bolster having vertically disposed overlapping portions which are rigidly connected by means of horizontally disposed rivets or like fastening means. Such construction not only permits the bolster to be taken apart and removed from the car without removing the end sill, but it permits the formation of tight joints or bearings between the parts of the bolster and the top and bottom sides of the center sills.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of.
parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
As shown in the drawings. my improved bolster includes a. lower member which may `be termed the main .body of the bolster, the
same comprising a vertically disposed web 10 having a centrally located opening 11 to receive the center sills of the underframe, and said yertically disposed web is provided with marginalqeinforcing and strengthen? ing flanges 12.
Formed integral with the central portions of the flanges on the lower edge of the web 10 and at the centerof the bolster below the opening 11 are depending flanges 18, and formed between these last mentioned flanges is a center bearing 14.
Formed integral with the underside of the web 10 at points equi-distant from the center bearing are side bearings 15 and formed integral with the extremities of the lower member are horizontally disposed plates 16'. These `plates are designed primarily for the purpose of serving as bearings for the upper ends of jacks utilized for raising the car when removing the trucks, and said plates are preferably perforated in order to receive hooks on the ends of chains or cables utilized forv towing the car to which the bolster is applied.
Formed in the web 10 are openings 17 i and formed on said web around these openings aie marginal flanges 18. The portions 10a of the web 10 between these openings 17 and between the inner pair of said openings and the central opening 11 form seats -and points of attachment for corresponding vertically disposed portions which are formed integral with and form a part of the upper member of the bolster. This upper member comprises a vertically disposed web 19 with the upper-portion of whichr is formed integral a curved plate 20, which latter is reinforced and strengthened by means of marginal flanges 21, and this curved plate and its flanges serve as a cradle or support for the tank (not shown).
Formed integral with and depending from the web 19 are vertically disposed plates 22 which overlap and bear directly against those portions of the web 10 which and at points near the ends thereof are i l sa brackets having cup-shaped faces, and which serve as'push pole pockets.
The central portions of the two parts of my improved bolster have broad flat bearings which can be readily brought into close contact with the top and botto'm surfaces of the center sills, and after said parts have been properly combined with the center sills. the overlapping vertically disposed u portions of the two members of which the bolster is formed are rigidly fixed to each other by means of horizontally disposed rivets. Thus, a two part bolster is provided which is very strong and' serviceable, and in case of repairs, the bolster canl be taken apart and removed from the car without the necessity of removing the end sills.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved body bolster can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a separable body bolster, a lower member, the central portion of which is adapted to underlie a center sill, an upper member, the central portion of which is adapted to overlie the center sill, said members having longitudinally extending over lapping vertically disposed web portions which are rigidly fixed to each other.
2. In a separable body bolster, a lower member, the central portion of which is adapted to underlie af center sill. an upper member, the central portion of which is adapted to overlie the center sill, said members having longitudinally extending vertically disposed overlapping web portions, and attaching means passing horizontally through said overlapping portions.
3. The combination with a center sill, of
' a bolster comprising a lower chord positioned beneath the center sill, an upper chord overlying said center sill. said upper and lower chords being rigidly fixed to said center sill and longitudinally extending overlapping vertically disposed web' portions on said chords which' web portions are fixed to each other.
4. A separable body bolster comprising a lower chord having a longitudinally extending vertically disposed web, an upper chord having a longitudinally extending vertically disposed web, portions of which overlie and are rigidly fixed to portions of the web of the lower chord. and a cradle integral with said upper chord.
5. A separable body bolster comprising a lower member having a longitudinally extending vertically disposed web in the center of which is formed an opening adapted to receive a center sill, and an upper member having a. longitudinally extending vertically disposed web, portions of which overlie and are rigidly fixed to portions of the web of the lower member.

A separable body bolster comprising a lower member having a longitudinally extending vertically disposed web in the center of which is formed an vopening adapted to receive a center sill, an upper member having a vertically disposed web, and portions of which last mentioned web overlie and are rigidly fixed to portions of the web of the lower member.
7 In a separable bolster, a lower member having a vertically disposed web, an upper member having a series of vertically disposed plates which overlap portions of the web of the lower member, and fastening means seated in said overlapping plates and web.
8. A separable bolster comprising a lower member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions, an upper member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions which overlap the web portions of the lower member, and fastening means seated in said overlapping web portions.
9. A separable bolstercomprising a lower member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions, an upper member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions which overlap the web portions of the lower member, fastening means seated in said overlapping web portions, and there being openings formed in said web portions, which openings coincide to form a single opening adapted to receive a center sill.
10. In a separable bolster, a lower member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions, the central portion of which lower member is adapted to underlie and be fixed to a center sill, a-
center bearing on said lower member, an upper member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions which overlap the'web portions of the lower member, and fastening means seated in said overlappingweb portions.
11. In a separable bolster, a .lower member having longitudinally extending vertically disposed web portions, the central portion of which lower member is adapted to underlie and be fixed to a center sill, a center bearing on said lower member, an upper member having longitudinally eX- tending vertically disposed web portions which overlap the web portions of the lower member, fastening means seated in said overlapping web portions, and the central portion of which upper member is adapted to overlie and be fixed to center sills.
12. In a separable bolster', a lower member adapted to underlie a center sill, an upopening, a to per member adapted to overlie the center sill, and said members having integral longitudinally extending overlapping vertically disposed web portions which are rigidly fixed to each other.
13. In a separable bolster, a lower member adapted to underlie a center sill, an upper member adapted to overlie the center sill, said members having a series of integral longitudinally extending vertically disposed. pairs of overlapping web members which are rigidly xed to each other and the central portions of said web members being provided with openings which receive the center sill.
14. In a separable bolster, a lower member adapted to underlie a center sill,'an up'- per member, adapted to overlie the center sill, and said members having a series of integral vertically disposed longitudinally extending pairs of overlappin web members, and horizontally disposed astening means seated in said 'pairs of overlapplng members. 15. A bolster of the class described comprising a bottom chord, a longitudinallyextending web integral therewith, in the cen'- ter of which web is formed a center chord which constitutes atank cradle, a ongitudinally extending web l integral with said top chord, which last mentioned web overlaps the longitudinally extending web of the lower chord, and there being a center sill openin formed in the web of the top chord, whic last mentioned opening coincides with the opening in the web of the bottom chord.
16. A bolster of the class described comprising a bottom chord, a longitudinally ex`- tending web integral therewith, in the center of which web is formed a center sill opening, a top chord which constitutes a tank cradle, a longitudinally extending web integral with said top chord, which last mentionedl web overlaps the longitudinally extending web of the lower chord, there being a center sill opening1 .formed in the web of the top chord, whic openm web o the bottom chord, and fastening means passing throu h the overlapping portions of thelongitu inally extending webs.
