GRINDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEfiUNG-MACHINES.
Application filed November 6, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. Ronenas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golden, in the county of Jefferson, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grinding attachments for sewing machines.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment of the type named which can be readily associated with various types of sewing machines and when so associated will enable scissors and other implements to be sharpened by a person un skilled in the art of sharpening, the attachment being so constructed as to assure the proper engagement of the edge of the implement being ground with the grinding wheel.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a fragment of a sewing machine showing the attachment secured thereto and also illustrating the manner of supporting shears in the operation of grinding so as to assure correct engagement between the edge of the shears and the grinding wheel. Fig. 2 a partial longitudinal section of what is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 an outer end view of the attachment, and Fig. 4 an inner end view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the main shaft of a sewing machine head Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Serial No. 729,800.
upon which is splined in the usual manner the fly wheel 11 and belt wheel 12. The end of the shaft 10 is provided with a threaded longitudinal recess 13 in which under normal conditions is adapted to be engaged the usual nut for locking the fiy wheel 11 and belt wheel 12 against disengagement from the shaft 10.
The attachment which forms particularly the subject matter of this invention is shown as comprising a screw B having a threaded shank 14: adapted to be engaged in the recess 13 in lieu of the usual locking screw, and a frusto conical head 15. Mounted upon the shank 14 against the inner end of the head 15 is a suitable grinding wheel 16. It will be noted that the angularity of the side wall of the head 15 with respect to the adjacent side of the grinding wheel 16 is such that when the shears, indicated at 17 are supported flat upon the side wall of the head 15 and the edge of the shears forced into engagement with the wheel 16 the proper relation between the edge of the shears and the grinding wheel 16 for eflicient sharpening of the shears will be assured. In order to apply the attachment it is only necessary to remove the locking screw from the recess 13 and then engage the shank 14 therein when the machine maybe started and the desired rotation of the grinding wheel efiected.
What I claim is The combination with a rotatable grinding stone of an axial attaching member therefor projecting from opposite faces thereof, adapted at one end for engagement with a rotating means and adapted at its opposite end to continuously support an article at a predetermined angle to the adjacent face of said grinding stone and in contact therewith.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT F. RODGERS. Witnesses DAVID J. Krsnn, CHARLES F. QUAINTANOE.
