To all whom, it may concern Beit known that I, LEWIS C. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Door- Operating Mechanism, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to dooroperating mechanism for sliding doors and partielllarly to that type of mechanism which involves a toggle-lever device connected to the door and to a fixed abutment and which is straightened when the door is closed, and a handle connected to the toggle-lever mechanism and arranged so that the initial movement of the handle will break the toggle lever and continued movement of the haridle will open the door.
In soine devices of this nature the handle is so connected to the toggle-lever mechanism that it has a continuous movement-relative to the door while the door is opening or closing, and in devices of this nature it is a desideratum that the handle should have as little movement aspossible relative to the door.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel mechanism which meets these conditions.
In order to give a proper understanding of my invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described.
The figure shows a device embodying my invention.

' The handle has a U-sliaped portion or reverse bend 11 therein and a link 12 is pivotally connected to the bend, as at 13. This link is pivotally connected at 14 to an arm 15 extending laterally from the member 3 near one end thereof. Vhen the parts are in the full line position Fig. 1 the door is closed andlocked in its closed position by reason of the alined position of the members ,3 and 4.
To open the door the operator moves the handle in the direction of the arrow a and the first movement of the handle operates through the link 12 and arm 15 to raise the toggle-lever member 3, thus breaking` the toggle lever.- Continued movement of the handle 9 'in the direction of the arrow opens the door, as will be obvious. Owing to the particular construction of the handle 9 and the manner of connecting it to the laterally-extending arm 15 by the link 12,
said handle has al comparatively small swinging movement relative to the door while thedoor is being opened or closed.
While I have illustrated a selected embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the constructional features shown.
I claim:
1. The combination with 'a sliding door, of toggle-lever door-operating mechanism comprising two members pivotally connected together and to the door and a fixed abutment, respectively, an arm extending laterally from the first-named member between its ends, a handle pivoted to the door, said pivot being in line with said arm when the door is closed, and a link pivotally connecting said handle and arm.
2. The combination with a sliding door', of toggle-lever door-operating mechanism comprising two members pivotally-connected together and to the door and a iixed abutment, respectively, an arm extending laterally from the first-named member between pivot point being in line with said arm when the door is closed and havinga U- shaped portion, and a link connecting said U-shaped portion to said arm.
3. The combination with a sliding door, of toggle-lever door-operating mechanism oomprisinggftgwo members pivotally connected together""`and to the door and a fixed abutment, respectively, said members being in alinement With each other when the door is closed, an arm extending vertically from the first-named member between its ends, u handle pivoted to thel door above said arm and said pivot being in line therewith, said handle having a U-shaped portion and a link pivotally onnecting said U-shaped por- 1b tions to the end of said arm.
