Description
entiendes.. COLE, or Censure n, ILLiNois.
Ateam Patent No. 112,551,'a1ed1tarch 14, 1871.
` IMP'RQVEMENT INKEVING wHEELsTo si-IAFTS.v
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part oi' thesame.
` `Teelt whom may dmteu'rn.: i v
Be it known that I, CHARLIE B. COLE, of Chester,
l in the county ofltandolph and State oflllinoisgvhave invented a newand `useful Improvement in Keying l 'Wheels to `Shaftisyand I do hereby declare that the `followingis a full, clear, and exactdeseription'thereof;
whieh will enable others skilled Vin the art to make and use the same',`reference being had to the aecompanying drawing forming part of this'speeifieation;
` ly invention relatestojonrnal-aud-hub couplings; -anc i `The principle thereof oonsists in applying, between the journal and hub, twoautagoni'stie wedgeaeaeh inclined transversely. to theline of the axle, but in oppositedirectiousfto one another, for the `purpose of l creating a constant tendency ,to` tighten, :instead of the reverse, as `the vehicle moves' forward. Figure 1 is alongitudin'al section of` a wheel-hub andY shaft keyed together s aeeordingto my `improved `plan,lon the line :t a: ofiig.' 2, and l Similar l letters `of `ieferenee'indicate corresponding parts.`
`Ais1thedoivenpart,andB theupperlp'art of the key, which are formedon thefoliliqueline C on the- "sides which ittogether, l
jlhe part is provided with one ormol'e studs, D,
` which enter corresponding recesses out in `the shaft E in the bottom ofthe key-seat therein, to prevent the said part from workingoutin ease it gets loose. l
Theprojcetons D nrenot so long as to prevent in sciting the pait A inthekey-seat after the wheel has' 1 Figure 2 is a trausversesection of Athe' same on the 1 lineyyoffig.1.` '4
been adjusted to its place, and before the partB is 'put in. Y
This latter part may be driven in tight, or it may be iitted more loosely, and afterward tightened up by one or more set-screws, F.
The oblique faces C of thesetwo parts are so arranged that the turning of Jthe wheel backward will v"cause the part B to riseup the oblique face of Athe part A andV thus wedge tightly between the bottoms of the two ,key-grooves.' 4 v \Vhen wheels are keyed injthis way their removal from `the shafts when required'is very simple and easy for byshiiting thewheel forward slightly the two parts of the key will become loosened and maybe` readily taken out.
In ease the wheel is of sneh a kind that the setsorews eannotgbe used, the two partsofithe key may .Y
be pinned together.
Instead of making the studs on the part'A and the* recesses in the bottom of the groove inthe shaft, the said studs may be ,on the other part and the recesses Minthe guoove 'of the wheel, but I prefer tliis araugef ment.
Having thus described` my invention, lI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The coupling, formed oi two laterallyand oppositelyv beveled pieces A B, applied as aud for, the purpose specified.
` CHARLIE B. COLE.
