Be it known that I, AUGUST SUniiH, acitizen of the .United States, residmgat Hastings-upon-Hudson, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Muflled Spur-Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to power transmission gearing and means in connection therewith for deadening the sound produced by the gearing.
The invention comprises a train or trains of spur gearing and a double-walled inclosing casing, the walls of the casing being provided with openings so arranged as to produce a broken or irregular circulationof air through the casing and thereby break up the sound waves. and 3 are sectional elevation views as indicated by the section lines 22 and 33 respectively, on Fig. 1.
My invention is adapted 'foruse in gen- 0 eral wherever speed changing gearing is employed and for the purpose of illustration, is herein shown as speed reduction gearing interposed between an electric motor M and a hoisting sheave or drum C adapted, for example, to drive the'ca'bles of an elevator or hoisting apparatus. The mechanism is mounted on a bedplate B. The shaft E, of'the hoisting drum, which shaft may be termed the driven shaft, is journaled in bearings supported on the standard F. This shaft is in alinement with the motor shaft D, which may be termed the drive shaft. A double-walled casing A is bolted to the motor M, and incloses the speed-reduction gearing. The casing A comprises an outer wall or plate 1 secured to the motor frame by means of bolts 2. An inner end wall 3 is connected by bolts 4 to the outer Wall 1, and is formed with a hub 5 surrounding the shaftD. A bearing sleeve 6 is interposed between the hub 5 and the drive shaft. Secured to the plate 3 by bolts? is a second inner-section 8 of the casing. The outer casing 1 is substantially in the form of a cylinder', and has a right hand face plate 11 which surrounds the hub 9 and is connected by bolts 12 .to the inner section 8. It will thus be seen that a double-Walled casing is provided Which is rigidly secured to the motor frame and provided" with bearings for both the drive shaft and the driven shaft.
The inner end of the motor shaft D is reduced, as shown in Fig. 1, and has keyed thereto a series of pinions 13. As shown, three of these pinions are provided, although the number may be varied as desired. Meshing with each of thepinions 13 are a number of spur gears 14 mounted for rotation about short shafts 15. These shafts, at one end, have bearings in" blocks 16, which blocks. are adapted to have a slight movement in slideways or bearings 17 formed on the inner section 3 of the easing. Coil springs 18 bear on opposite sides against the blocks 16 and serve as a means for yieldingly holding the gears in position. This permits the slight adjustment which may be necessary on account of inaccuracies in the gears or the positions of the bearings. Each set of gears 14 is secured together by bolts 20. Ball bearings 21 are placed between the gears 14 andthe shafts 15. The right hand ends of the shafts 15 are also supported in spring held bearing blocks carried by a disk 24, the latter being mounted on the inner end of the shaft E. Surrounding the gears 14 are gear rings 19 provided with internal gear teeth meshing with the teeth on the gears 14. The, gear wheels 14 as indicated in Fig. 1 are arranged with their teeth in stepped or staggered .relation. Teeth on the pinions 13 and the rings 19 are correspondingly arranged. This permits a smoother operation of the gearing, reducing the noise and 'vibration and increasin the efiiciency. The gear rings 19 are ba bitted to the inner surface of a flanged member 22 which is keyed to the driven shaft E. This member 22 forms a sort of easing surrounding the spur gears. The Babbitt metal or other non-resilient or sound-deadening material 23, forms a solid connection between the gear rings and the casing 22, and serves to prevent the transmission of vibrations from the gearing, thereby deadening the noise.
The outer and inner walls of the casing A, t e casing 22, and the disk 24, are each provlded with openings 25, which, when the gearing is in operation, serve to break up the air currents, or to prevent an even or regular circulation of the air, and thus break upthe sound waves, which would otherwise be transmitted by the air circulating in the spaces between the gearing and the Walls of the casing. In other words, these openings cause an irregular circulation of the air through the casing in all directions, and serves to break up or disturb sound vibrations so that the noise of the gearingis deadened or reduced to a minimum.
Various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts might be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I wish therefore not to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination of power transmitting mechanism, an inclosure therefor, and means associated with said inclosure for producing an irregular circulation of air within the said inclosure and thereby muffling or reducing the sound produced by said power transmitting mechanism.
2. The combination of power transmitting mechanism, and means for producing a broken or irregular circulation of air about said mechanism and thereby breaking up the sound waves. produced by said mechanism.
' 3. The combination of gearing, and an inclosing casing provided with openings arranged to produce an irregular circulation of air and thereby break up the sound waves produced by the gearing.
4. The combination of gearing, a closure therefor, and a second closure for said gear-- ing and first named closure, said closures being relatively rotatable and formed to break up the currents of air and thereby reduce the sound produced by said gearing.
5. The combination of relatively rotatable casings, one within the other, and gearing within the casings, the casings being provided with openings arranged to break up the circulation of air.
6. The combination of a casing, gearing therein, and a member'within the casing operable to break up the circulation of air within the casing, said member and easing being relatively rotatable- 7. The combination of gearing, an inclosing casing formed with openings permitting air to circulate through the casing, and a member within the casing operable to break up the air currents, said member and easing having a relative rotation.
8. The combination of a gearing, and an inclosing casing having double walls spaced apart and provided with openings arranged to form irregular paths for the circulation of air.
9. The combination of a cylindrical casing having double walls spaced apart and provided with openings in the walls, said openings being out of alinement, gearing Within the casing, and a disk rotatable within the casing and formed with openings to produce a broken or'uneven circulation of air.
10. The combination of a cylindrical, double-walled casing, the walls being spaced apart and provided with air openings out 'of alinement, a plate or disk rotatable within the casing and having air openings, and gearing within the casing.
11. The combination with a cylindrical casing having double walls spaced apart and formed. with openings therethrough, a drive shaft and a driven shaft extending into the casing, gearing within the casing connecting said shafts and comprising a rotatable plate or disk formed with openings to produce a broken or irregular circulation of air.
