Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented Feb. $9, 1915.
Application filed March so, 1914.. Serial no. 828,129.
ZbaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that '1, JOHN A. Lemons, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ardmore, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box Construction, of which the following is a specification. i 7
My invention relates to the construction of boxes, cartons or receptacles made of any suitable material, and more particularly to such as are made of card-board, fiber-board, straw-board, single or double faced air-cellboard, paper or the like. a
My invention resides in means for detachably securing to the box proper a box wall, such as a top, cover or lid, the construction being preferably such that the detachable wall or lid may be suitably packed in small volume with other like lids or covers nested therewith.
My invention resides in the detachable wall, cover or lid of the character hereinafter described, and in the combination of such a lid or cover with the box proper.
For an illustration of some of the forms my invention may take reference is to be had to the acocmpanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional View through a box with detachable lid or cover made in accordance with my invention, such section being taken, for example, on the line XX of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 showsin perspective a fragment of the detachable wall or cover in position for assembly with the box proper, also shown fragmentarily. Fig. 3 shows the parts illustrated in Fig. 2 in assembled position. Fig. 4 is a View in perspective, some parts insection, showing a modification of my invention, Fig. 5 1s a fragmentary perspective view showing the attaching means' 'illustrated in Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is a perspective view, some parts in section, of a further modification of my invention. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the box and detachable cover members of the form shown in Fig. 6 before assembling.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, B represents the box proper consisting for example, of four s des, 1, 2, 3 and 4, it being understood however that the member B may be of any width, length, height, and of any suitable shape, and as generally provided with a bottom.
At or near two of its corners, inthe case where the detachable wall ormember is to operate as a hinged cover or lid, or at four of the corners, if desired, the box B has may have also the marginal flap 11 adapted to embrace the three sides, 3, 1 and 4: of the box 13. If desired the parts 8, 9, l0 and 11 may be made out of a single sheet of material, or may be of several pieces suitably fastened together.
As will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the slots 7 are brought into alinement with the slots 5 and the parts pushed together until the slots 7 straddle or embrace the parts 12 below the sl'ots 5 and the slots 5 embrace the parts 6 above the slots 7 of members 8, the flap 9 passing down outside of the wall 2, while the flaps 8 pass down inside of the box parallel to the walls 3 and st to the position shown in Fig. 3.
With the parts so assembled the cover may be swung about the edge 13 as a hinge, the fiap 9 pressing the cover firmly and rigidly against the box, and assisted by the flap 8 turned at right angles to the flap 9 and preferably lying against the inner wall of the box. 11 may be omitted if desired, or may be so disposed as to extend down inside of the box instead of around the outside of the same.
I It will be seen that the box B may be flattened for packing, and numerous covers C may be nested or packed in very small space and later assembled as above described.
Obviously the marginal flaps- By the construction shown a slot of the box member straddles the cover member and a slot of the cover member straddles part of the box member, and the cover member is provided with flaps inside and outside the box for firmly holding and bracing the cover.
Itwill be understood that the flap 8 is normally in the plane of'the flap 9 and is then bent at right angles thereto as shown, and it will accordingly be understood that the top edge 14 of the flap 8 is not, attached to the member 10 but is swung in under it, though it is to be understood that it may be so attached to the cover member 10 if desired.
In Fig. 4 a side wall 4: of the box B is provided with two slots 15 and 16 between which is left the tongue 17 integral with the wall 4. The detachable member C has the flap 9 outside of the rear wall 2 of the box, the same extending around in the flap part 9 and embracing the sides of the box. And a part of this flap 9 which extends into the slot 15 is bent back upon itself at 18 to form a loop embracing the tongue 17 and terminates in a part 19 extending through the slot 16 and then between the wall 4 and the part 9'. The loop is of a width corresponding substantially with the depth of the slots 15 and 16 and has the part 20 extending along the inside face of the wall 14 to a distance below the slots 15 and 16, thus forming slots 21 and 22 between members 9 and 20. In this case the cover or lid swings about edge 13 as a hinge. 1
In Figs. 6 and 7, the rear wall 2 of the box B is provided with the slots 15 and 16 leaving between them the tongue 17 integral with the wall 2. Here again the rear flap 9 of the-cover member C lies against the out side face of the box wall 2 and has a part bent upon itself at 18 to form a loopadapted to receive the tongue 17, and the portion extends outwardly again through the slot 15 and terminatesin the part 19 lying between the flap 9 and the box wall 2.
As in Figs. 4 and 5, where the parts'9 and 20 extend below the slots 15 and 16 there are formed in efi'ect slots 21 and 22 so that the parts may come together upon the principle described in connection with Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, it being understood however that theloops of Figs. Land 5 and of Figs. 6 and 7 need not have the extensions below the slots 15 and 16 in which case there will 7 be no slots 21 and 22.
other, one of said flaps hinged to said cover,
the other flap having a slot open at the edge ,flaps and box walls interlocking by engaging in each others slots.
3. The combination with a box member having separated open ended slots leaving a tongue between them, of a cover member havinga looped slotted flap enteringsaid slots and embracing said tongue.
' 4. The combination with box walls joined at right angles to each other, one of said walls having a slot parallel to and adjacent to its joint with the other of said walls, of a-detachable cover having flaps joined at right anglesto each other and extending, respectively, parallel with said box walls, the flap extending parallel with the unslotted box wall having a slot parallel to and adjacent the joint between said flaps, said slotted box wall adapted to enter the flap slot and the slotted flap adapted to enter said box wall slot.
5. The combination with box walls joined at right angles to each other, one of said walls having a slot parallel to and adjacent to its joint with the other of said walls, of a detachable cover having flaps joined at rightangles to each other and extending,
respectively, parallel with said box walls,
the flap extending parallel with the unslotted box wall having a slot parallel to and adjacent the joint between said flaps, said slotted box wall adapted toyenter the flap slot and the slotted fiap adapted to enter said box wall slot, and a hinged joint between said cover and the unslotted flap.
6. The combination with box walls joined at right angles to eachother, one of said walls having a slot parallel to and adjacent to its joint with the other of said walls, of a detachable cover having flaps joined at right angles to each other and extending, respectively, parallel with said box walls, the flap extending parallel with the unslotted box wall having a slot parallel to and adjacent the joint between said flaps, said slotted box wall adapted to enter the flap slot and the slotted flap adapted to enter said box wall slot, a hinged joint between said' cover and the unslotted flap, and a marginal flap on said cover at right angles thereto, said unslotted box wall adapted to enter between said last named flap and said slotted flap.
7 The combination with a box wall having parallel slots at right angles to one edge of sziid Wall, a tongue formed between said fixed my signature in the presence of the two slots, 2% detgchalfile cfciver hinigled at tge said subscribing Witnesses. e ge o sai We ,a ap to W ich sai cover is hinged disposed parallel with said box JOHN LAFORE' Well and having a slotted loop embracing Witnesses: said tongue.
