is herein illustrated in connection with a" leather rolling machine. Such machines are commonly provided with two rolls one of which is movable transversely7 of its axis toward and from the other so that the stock may be subjected to pressure during its passage through the machine. The pressure applied is necessarily very great, one of the results of which is that as the stock passes from between the rolls and the rolls assume their normal position certain parts of the machine are subjected to a sudden heavy strain; and this strain has been particularly destructive to the parts of the toggle or toggles through the agency of which the pressure is commonly applied to the rolls. ln order to promote brevity, disadvantages which arise in connection with machines of a certain type have been set forth, but it should be understood that similar disadvantages may arise in connection with various other machines in which toggles are made use of.
Accordingly in order to overcome this and other disadvantages the present invention contemplates as one of its principal objects the provision with a toggle of a member for moving the knuckle of said toggle, actuating means for said member, and a stop for engaging the member whereby the arts of the toggle are relieved of strain. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the toggle which is arranged to raise the hearings ot the lower roll of a leather rolling machine is actuated by the movement of a rod which in a given position contacts with a stop so that the Jforce which up to this point was applied to the toggle is thereafter taken by the stop. With this construction the rolls of the machine are normally held close together. As soon, however, as they are separated and a piece of stock fed between them the force which was normally applied to the stop'is Atransferred to the toggle, the stock thereby being thoroughly pressed; yand when the stock passes from between the rolls the stop once more receives the thrust of the rod, and the parts of the toggles are relieved. Or to state the matter differently, the machine is provided with a movable member which is normally,
held in a given position through the agency of a toggle, and means are provided for automatically applying force to the toggle when the member is moved in opposition to it and for relieving the toggle from said force when the member is returned through the agency of the toggle to normal position. Preferably, as shown in the illustrated embodiment, a yielding member is provided for holding the toggle in its normal position, and the stop is also acted upon by yielding means. lVith this construction the rebound of the toggle as the stock leaves the rolls is effectively cushioned.
These and other -features of the invention including certain details oit' constrution and combinations of parts will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a leather rolling machine in which one form of my invention is embodied; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective showing the relation of the push rod to the pivot pin and the ends of the levers of the toggle.
The shaft l of the lower roll of theleather rolling machine is supported in bearings one of which is shown at 3, said bearings being slidable in the frame 2. Inasmuch as both bearings of the lower roll are supported by mechanisms which are substantially identical, only one of said mechanisms will be described. Pivoted to the frame of the machine at 5 is a. lever 7 provided with a seat for a plate i), the other end of which is received in a seat in the bearing 8. Also mounted upon the pivot 5 is a second lever 11, and threaded through said lever is a screw 13, the outer end of which contacts with the rear portion of the lever 7. This screw is connected by a universal joint (not shown) with thc adjusting rod 15 so that rotation of said rod will vary the angular re-` lation of the two levers. The levers 7l and 11 therefore constitute together a bell crank lever the arms of which are adjustable so that the normal yposition of the Vlower roll may be varied. Pivoted at 17 to the lower end of the lever 11 is a tog le lever 19, said Atoggle lever being pivoted a in 21 to av second toggle lever 23 whichfn turn is be employed, and in the illustrative machine `a spring 35 surrounding said rod bears atl one end against a bracket 39 and at the'other lend against a shoulder37 on the rod.` This A bracket is carried by a plate 41 which slides in guidewaysl 43. A handy wheel 45 is fast toa shaft 46 which is rotatably mounted in A the bracket 39. This rod carries at its opposite end a beveled gear, not shown, which meshes with a second beveled gear, also not shown, carried by an upright shaft which is rotatable in the bracket 39, but held from longitudinal movement with respect thereto, the lower end of this upright shaft being threaded into the frame'of the machine. It will be clearA therefore that by rotating the hand wheel 45 the bracket 39 may be raised or lowered and the tension of the spring 35 thereby varied.'
In order to limit the downward movement of the knuckle of the toggle,a stop 47 is slidably mounted in a bore in a bracket 49 which dependsfrom the frame of the mav chine, said stop being yieldably supported by a spring 51. The stop 47 is provided with a stem 52 upon which are threaded nuts 53 by which the normal position of the stop as well as the tension of the spring 51 may be varied. A treadle, not shown, is provided by which the operator may depress the lower roll when it is desired to f feed a piece of stock to themachine.

It will be observed vhat the extension 33 on the rod 31 contacts with the stop 47 in the normal position of the parts of the machine and that'in said position the thrust of the spring is taken by the stop. If now the roll is separated and a piece of stock is fed through the machine, power is at once automatically applied to the toggle by the spring 35 and remains so applied until the stock passes from between the rolls whereupon the extension 33 once more contacts with `the stop 47. v n
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is 1. The combination with a toggle, a member arranged to move the knuckle of said toggle, actuating means for said member,
y and a stop for engaging said memberwhere-y by the parts of the toggle are relieved of strain. f 2. The combination with a toggle of a spring for normally holding said toggle in a given position, and means for relieving the parts of said toggle from the thrust of saidV spring while the toggle is in said position.
3. The combination with a stop, a rod and yielding means vfor normally causing said rod to contactwith'said stop,.of a toggle operably connected therewith, the knuckle of which is movable with said rod away from said stop. c
4. The combination with ayielding stop, a rod and yielding means for ,normally causing said rod to contact with said stop, of a toggle operably connected` with saidrod. 5. The combinationwith a member to be moved of a toggleefor moving said member, a rod arranged to engage the knuckle of said toggle, yieldingymeans for actuating said rod and a stop engaging said rod and normally relieving the parts ofsaid toggle from strain. The combination with amovable member, a toggle having connection therewith, a yielding device arranged to act on said toggle and thereby exert pressure upon said member, and means arranged to act through the knuckle of said toggle in opposition to said yielding device for cushioning the rebound of said toggle and relieving its parts from strain.
10. The combination with a movable member, a toggle having connection therewith, a yielding device arranged to act on said toggle and thereby exert pressure upon said member, and yielding means arranged to act lo through the knuckle-of said toggle in oppo-l sition to saidfyielding device for'cushioning the rebound ofi'said toggle and relievngits parts from strain.
