STATES PATENT GFFIG.
W. R. GLOVER, 0F GLASGOW, KENTUCKY.
PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,421, dated' August 1, 1954.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, W. R. GLovnR, of Glasgow, in the county of Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description o-f the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-' Figure l, is a side view of my improved pen, attached to the socket and holder, as when ready for use. Fig. 2, is` a side view nally through its center. view of do.
Similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and use- Fig. 3, is a back sists in attaching lips, (c), (c), to the pen as will be hereafter shown and described, for the purpose of preventing the ink from ascending the pen, and coming in contact with the fingers.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a metallic tube, or socket, in one end of which a holder, B, is inserted.
C, is the pen, the upper end of which is secured to a shank, D, around which a spiral `The shank, D, with the spiral spring, E, around it, is fitted within the tube or socket, A, the spring being confined between two plates, (a), (a), within the tube or socket,
the plates, see Fig. 2. On the end of the i shank, D, there is a small nut, (o), which retains the shank within the socket, also shown in Fig. 2.
At about the center of the pen, C, there are two lips, (c), (c), which are placed transversely on the pen, and project a suitable distance from it. These lips may be secured to the pen in any proper manner. One lip is on the back side of the pen, and the other on the front, or opposite side, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The lips prevent the ink from ascending and coming Ain contact with the fingers.
The spring, E, will give an elasticity to the pen, C, and cause it to run smoothly'over the paper, even when rough, or soft, and will render the points of the pen much more lasting than those of the ordinary pen. The hand writing will also be less stiff than usual, it being well known that metallic pens, owing to their inflexibility, cause persons to write a sti hand, who, with a quill p pen, write a free and easy hand.
The ngers are prevented from being soiled by ink coming in contact with them, the lips (c), (c), effecting this.
The improvement will not add materially to the expense in manufacturing pens.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Attaching lips, (c), (c) to the pen, as herein shown, for the purpose of preventing the ink from ascending in the pen, and coming in contact with the fingers.
W. R. GLOVER.
