` imlar letters ofreference denote-corresponding partsginall `thewiignres- The inventionV relates tothat class of head-blocks in whioh'the loggcant or timber is dogged to and fed forward bykvertieal'knees which rest upon"ways.l
pnrpose,"'afslotted vdog, jwhich recprncates on a 'gh xe, issupported against` lateral othrusthy the allsfiot'thelltueeindependently oi',` the pills ou which it slides; is, 4when "withdrawn from the log, protected by the shellfof the knee, and "is voperated by a lever andulink in such mannen that when .it (the dog) is withdrawn it` is `lo'ek'edfin"position '.bythe -lever and l link referred to.
' Thefsecondf'part ofthe invention` consists in com.
` fbining-with'the..headyblock, upon-which knees move, .azgraduatcdaoradj ustablestop, or seres'of stops, for- 'regulating the `point to which the knees shall be with- 1 drawn,; in 'order that the-knees may be drawn back just a"jproper `distanceto receivea log-cant of any given size.; and this vpart of the' invention further con; sist-s,v in operating thisf adjustable stop or gauge by means of an index-wheel, constructed in suchV manner that the operator can` readily determine the distance `.wl'1ich the kneescan`bewithdrawn audcouseqneutly the sized logthatcan be` accommodated.
"1 The third pai-trof the invention consists in a novel l .l construction' of the `doublererank-wheel, by which it is made toscrve, iii-.combination with a stop, to limit the motion oi' "the pawls `which` carry the log forward. `intheaccompanying drawing. C A. Arcpresent-the body `or bed of the head-block,
f l `runde preferablyinjtwo parts, asindicated in flgsfl 4and. 2, and bolted or otherwise secured together.
,"lhis part vof the head-block is made substantially inthetnsual manner,` except that it is provided upon Mitsv upper` face witha double track, or twoindependent mackathe upper one, 1A' A',lbeing the broadest, and l intendodgto `receive, will Support the log, while the ,l'oweronfg which" is formed inthis instance by simply Vrabbeting v.the inner edges of tracks A', as is `shown plainly at a, iig. 1, is intended to support the knee B.
' usually adopted in this class of blocks, and is'constructed with a groove extending along each side near its lower face, these grooves receiving the waysv a. Y The vertical portion of the knee is recessed or chambered, as at b, iig. 3, for the reception of the-toothed dog C.
The dog Gis provided with slots c, iig. 3, which through the chamber b. Thev slots c are not parallel with the outer-face of so'that when thedog is thrust downwardl from the `position in which it is shown, it is at the same time brought forward, as will be readily understood without `further explanation.
C isa hand-lever, pivoted to the vertical portion of the head-block, and connected with the dog O by link `spur project-ing from the dog thmugh a slot,.c, this with theinclination of the slot c in the dog.
dog or` hook used for dogging the log-in the usual F Fx are two tongueesprings, attached to any con- IE for the purposeof holding said pawls in contact with the ratcheted face of the knee B. l
and allowing the'knee to be drawn back;| I employ a, tripping cam-shaft, f, or a shaft with` a projecting lip, and operate this shaft by a wheel, Il, or a. crank, F, iig. 0
gears gf h, gear. h. being mounted upon shaft H, which inclose suitable pins projecting from or extending4 slot being inclined from a vertical line'to'coi'respond l manner, as tbe dog C is intended more particularly to be, used when-sawing the last board, when it is necesy For the purpose of throwing the pawls out of actionA ,'flg. an a shaft munies in suit-able bearings at the side of the ,bed A A, and rotated by the bevel- The kneeB is made substantially in the form A 'the knee, bn't are inclined, as shown in the drawing, v
c, the lower end of thislink being .connected to a- D. isa staple or eye, to-which is hingedan ordinary e1, andthus limit the throw of venient part of the head-block in 'such position that their free ends engage with the lower sides of pawlsr knee B. near or at the vertical tin of the stop e, which 'is arranged .transversely of the hcadfbloclr, and operated by hand-wheel H'. This hand-wheel .has a series ol'nnmbers stamped upon its periphery, as shown in iitgt. 2, the object ofavhich will hev fully explaiuedherea er. g g are short studs4 attached to or formednpon shaft G.- They are placed spilally ou thel shaft, and extend from its i'ont endvsnch distance toward the other end as may be found desirable. Y I is an arln or plate attached to the lower side of part, and extending across the face of way or Ltrack A', and is bent down'4 at about a right angle, so that its cnd will engagewith the stopsor stads g on -shaft'G, thus limiting the backward movement of the knee.
-J is a spring pawl, which takes into n hgroores ont in theperlpheral face of wheel H.
These notches are out at auch intervals that when the wheel is moved from one notch to anotherx he shaft G will be turned ihr enough to turn the ext f stud to the upper side of the shaft, so that the arm I may pass by the stud which han. just been turned to one side,- and strike against the one which I have just descri d asi having been turned up.
-ln mating my head-block 1 lirst set the sha; G at such point as will allow the. knee to be withdrawn far enough to admit the log, this point'beng indicated by the figures on the rim ot hand-wheel H', they bcing so arranged, relative to studs' or stops g, that they will designate which stop is turned up, and consequently how far liack the knee can be moved. The logy is now placed on the carriage and secured .by the dogs, as is customary in this class of headblocks,.aml fed forward hy means ofthe pawls E in a manner which is well um lstood and need not be pal'- ticularly described, e I in reference to the operacngages with the shoulders c c' on clank-wheel E, and thus limits the brward movement of the knee B, and itis apparent that by using a stop which shall lill up a greater portion of' the space between these shoulders, the throw of the lever at each' reciprocation, and the consequent ad` vance of the log toward the saw, can be regulated at the'will of the operator.
Of course, in feeding the log forward, the position of the tripping-shaft a' should be that shown in the draw- "hand-wheel H', substantially as described.
v naar:
tion will be found very eiective for vthat purpose, as
the direct motion on a. right line is better adapted to give the jaws of the dog a firm hold than is the nlvement in an arc'of a circle Vwhich others have; and then again, under my arrangement of parts, the weight of the lever and link tends toholdthe dog .iu place, iustead of to draw itout.
I do not claim, broadly, the slotted dog 0, as that. is admitted to heold; but I believe that my combination and arrangement of pants are new. y
I am aware that head-bloeks have been constructed with a double crank-wheel by means of which the pawls were actuated, and that in this construction there was a eolleton the crank-wheel shaft, said collet engaging with stops to limit the throw of the pawls; therefore I do not claim, broadly, the use of the double crank-wheel, nor of stops to limit its throw, but only claim mine as an improvement upon the consti" t o" referred to. p Having now described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1; In combination with the hollow knee B, the slotted dog U, arranged within the walls of the knee, and operated by the lever C' and link c, as described.
2. The shaft G, provided with the spiral row of studs g, in combination with the knee B, as set forth,
3. The combination of shafts G H, gears 4. The crank-wheel E, provided with shoulders e e, in combination with pawls E, shaft E', and stop e, when these parts are constructed and arranged forjoint operation, as described.
