To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, EDWARD T. ALLAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, tate of Ohio, haye invented certain new'and use-' ful Improvements in Pasteboard Shipping- Cases, of which th'efollowing is a description, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pasteboard shipping cases. An object of the invention is to provide a shipping case of this character which canbe made and shipped in a knocked-down form and readily fastened. together by staples,

My improved case is preferably of a rectangular form and the top and bottom are formed of four flaps 1, 2, 3 and 4; are all of the same width and the case being of a rectangular form, it will be seen that the twoflaps 1 and 3 do not extend into the center of the case, but leave a space between their inner edges, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. '3 of the drawin s.

The two opposite'en s of the case, carrying the flaps 1 and 3, at their up er and lower edges are provided with -shaped slits or cuts 5, and the heads of the T-shaped slits or cuts are in a plane just below the flaps 1 and 3 of the cover or bottom, the purpose of which will belater described. The flaps 2 and 4' are provided with transverse cuts 6 and 7, which are at -a point inside of the inner ends of the fiaps' 1 and3, as fully shown in Fig. 3 of the .drawings. cuts 6 and 7? form flaps or doors through which an anvil can be inserted for stapling the case, as will be hereinafter described.

.After the case has been'filled with merchandise, -or the like, the-anvil is inserted through the T-shaped cuts or slits 6 and the flaps l and 3 are folded inwardly and the flaps 2 and 4 are then folded inwardly over the flaps land 3. The two edges ofthe flaps 2 and 4 are stapled down upon theflaps 1, and thisoperation is repeated from each edge of the case. The anvil, as shown, is of a curved form to extend up into engagelnent with that portion of the flaps 2 and '4 between the ends of the fiapsl' and 3.

In order to staple the flaps 2 and 4 down adjacent the inner edges of the two shorter flaps -1 and 3, a fiat anvil is inserted through the doors in'the flaps 2 and 4, formed by the slits 6 and 7 under the flaps l and 3, and the flaps 2 and 4 stapled thereto adjacent the inner edge of the flaps 1 and 3 at the points marked A. After the flaps are stapled at the points A, heretofore described, the short anvil is removed and the two edges of the flaps 2 and 4, between the slits 6 and 7, are

.stapled together, thus securely fastening the upper end .of the case.

By this constructionand arrangement of .the case, it will be seen that T have provided means whereby the closing flaps of the case can be readily fastened together to close the case without injury to the contents thereof. It will be seen that when the case is thus closed, a slight space is left between the flaps 3 and 4 at the point opposite the doors, or at that point not covered by the flaps l and 3, and I preferably cover the entire space between the flaps 3 and 4 with an ad: hesive tape 8, and thus more securely fasten the top of the case in its closed-position and at the same time making a tight joint to prevent moisture from entering the case.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

2. A shipping case of the character described comprising a body'portion having closing flaps on all four sides, the two opposite sides of the body portion having T-shaped slits adapted to allowan anvil to pass within the case below the flaps of the cover and above the contents of the case.

3. A shipping case of the character described comprising a body portion having closing flaps on all four sides, the two opposite sides of the body portion having slits adapted to allow an anvil to pass within the case above the contents thereof and below the flaps and two of the flaps having doors adapted to receive an anvil, substantially as shown and described.

4. A shipping case of the character described comprising a body portion having flaps on all four sides adapted to close the case, the two opposite sides of the body portion having slits adapted to allow an anvil to ass within the case above the contents an below the flaps, and the two flaps carried by the opposite sides of the case having doors at their inner edges in beyond the flaps carried by thesides carrying the slits.

5. A shipping case of the character described comprising a body portion formed with flaps on all four sides to form the top, the two opposite sides of the body portion having T-shaped slits at their upper edges through which an anvil may be passed above the contents of the case and below the flaps for clenching the staples, the flaps carried by the two opposite sides having doors at their inner edges in beyond the flaps carried by the sides having the slits and through which an anvil may be passed under the flaps carried by the sides having the slits for clenching a staple, substantially as shown and described.

6. A shipping case of the character de scribed, comprising a body portion formed with flaps on all four sides to form a double walled top, two opposite sides of the body portion having T-shaped slits below the upper edge and below the meeting edges of the'flaps carried by the sides arranged at right angles 'to the sides carrying the slits, and the last mentioned flaps having doors arranged between the meeting edges of the flaps carried by the ends carrying the slits and through which an anvil may be passed under the last mentioned flaps for clenching a staple, whereby all four flaps can be gtapled together adjacent the edges of the In testimony whereof, I afitix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
