Description
H. P. SAYFORD.
, 1915. 1,164,962. Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
IN VEN TOR 7/afgqf? (y yjb iti. BY m 7 7M A TTORN E VS UNITED STA ES PATENT OFFICE.
citizen of the United .States, and a resident of Vineland, county of Cumberland, and
State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Lined Finger-Bowls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to paper-lined finger bowls, and has for its object to improve a device of that class whereby the paper lining and the bowl proper may be more readily and effectively assembled and whereby the lining may be maintained in operative position in the bowl proper during use and equally readily dissociated when it is desired to discard the lining after ordinary use of the bowl.
To these ends my-invented improvements consist in providing the bowl proper, which is preferably metallic, with an inwardly projecting and hence overhanging flanged rim, preferably slightly inclined upward; also, in the combination therewith of a paper-lining suitably prepared to measurably resist the action of water, normally conforming substantially to the contour of the bowl proper below its flanged rim, and crimped or otherwise folded so as to be more or less resiliently compressed radially in order that it may be sprung into coincidence withthe interior of the bowl proper and its upper edge pass under and abut against the under surface of the flanged rim thereof, in assembling the said elements, and may be removed from the bowl with equal facility, by the same compressing action, on the crimps or folds, through the medium of a fork or other like instrument.
My invention further consists in providing an aperture in the base of the bowl proper whereby a coinciding paper lining without crimps or foldsmay be used, the lining being ejected, after use, by finger pressure on its basal wall through said aperture in the bowl.
In the.accompanying drawing illustrating my invention: Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in its best form and comprising all the elements stated; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof, and of the crimped paper lining; Fig. 3 is an elevation of an oval bowl and of a paper lining not crimped or folded, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of a Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed February 27, 1915 Serial No. 10,894.
crimped-paper lining detached from the bowl fproper Reerrmg. now to said drawing, and more especially -to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 thereof, in which is illustrated one embodiment of my invention, the same may comprise a bowl proper 1 of thin sheet metal or other suitable material, having the preferably circular base 2, from which the side of the bowl flares upwardly and outwardly, as at 3, to a pomt 4 situated substantially midway of the vertical height of the bowl, from which the side may be directed vertically upwardly, as at 5, to a point 7 which indicates the annular rim surrounding the open top 10 of the bowl, at which point the metal of said rim is directed inwardly, and on a shghtly upward incline preferably, to form a flange 8 which may be continuous as shown, or otherwise, to perform its funct1on, hereinafter stated, of maintaining the paper lining in place on the bowl. The base 2 may be provided with a suitable, preferably circular central opening or aperture 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and if desired the bowl may be ornamented in any desired manner,'as for example, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by cutting or piercing the portion 5 of its side to form a suitable pattern in the metal or other material of which it be composed.
For retaining the water or other fluid in the finger bowl when in use, a suitable lining 15 of waterproofed paper or other suitable material is provided, and while this lining may be of any suitable shape or configuration, good results have been attained by the use of a lining formed as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and which comprises a circular base 16 preferably of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the base 2 of the bowl, and an upwardly and outwardly flaring, crimped, plaited, fluted or folded side 18, the whole being substantially in the form of a hollow truncated cone, the length of the side being such as to adapt it to fit snugly within the bowl in the manner hereinafter described. The lining may preferably be so formed that its greatest normal exterior diameter will be substantially equal to, or slightly greater than, the greatest internal diameter of the bowl, preferably just under the flanged rim 8, so that, when the lining is in position in the bowl, the latter will tend to slightly compress the lining in a radial direction which action assists in maintaining the lining snugly in position during use.
The parts of the device may be readily assembled for use by pressing the lining downwardly through the aperture 10 in the bowl, simultaneously slightly radially compressing the lining manually so as to assist in passing it through the, aperture. During this operation the edge of the flanged rim 8 will also, unless. the lining be very greatly manually compressed, engage the surface of the side of the lining and as its downward movement is continued serve to assist in temporarily compressing the lining radially inwardly. When the lining has been inserted far enough so as to seat upon the base 2, its upper extremity will just pass beneath the flanged rim 8, leaving the lining free to expand or spring outwardly beneath the flanged rim to assume its normal contour, which action serves to snugly seat the lining in the bowl and beneath the rim thereof with the upper edge of the lining abutting against the under side of the rim. The device may now be filled with liquid and utilized in the ordinary manner, after which the liquid may be emptied out and the lining removed, preferably .by inserting a fork or other suitable instrument under the flanged rim within one or more of the spaces or openings formed by the crimps or fluting and between the lining and the inside of the bowl and prying the lining upwardly and outwardly, at the same time exerting pressure upon the base of the lining by inserting the operators finger through the aperture 12 in the base of the bowl. After the used lining has been removed, a fresh lining may be inserted to adapt the finger bowl for use by another individual.
In Fig. 3 is shown a bowl of slightly different contour, the side 30 being outwardly bulged in a continuous curve from the base 31 to the flanged rim 32, similar to the rim 8 hereinbefore described. The lining 34 shown in Fig. 3, however, is not crimped or plaited but has a smooth side 35 flaring upwardly and outwardly from the base 36, its greatest diameter being preferably substantially equal to the internal diameter of the bowl beneath the flanged rim. A lining of this form may be inserted within the bowl in a manner similar to that'hereinbefore described, the inherent flexibility of the paper or 'ther material of which the lining is com osed permitting it to bend inwardly sufliciently to pass the flanged rim, and thereafter to assume its normal contour, when in position inthe bowl. As a lining of this form, especially after'being wet, fits very snugly beneath the rim, with its upper periphery contacting at all points with the interior of the bowl, 1t is quite difficult in practice to assist in removing the lining by inserting an instrument between it and the bowl, but the lining may be "cry readily removed solely by exerting pressure upon its base by means of the operators finger inserted through the aperture 12, as hereinbefore described.
It is not desired to restrict the use of the crimped linings, or of the plain linings, to any particular, form of bowl, nor to limit the invention to devices having details of construction and arrangement identically similar to those of the embodiments of the invention herein illustrated and described, as it will be evident that numerous changes may be made in such details, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A paper lined finger bowl comprising a containing bowl provided with an annular rim having an inwardly projecting flange, in combination with a removable cupshaped paper lining crimped in the direction of its depth to make said lining both compressible and resilient radially and adapted thereby to be sprung into substantial coincidence with the interior of said bowl and readily removable therefrom, said flange extending over and substantially covering the top crimped edge of said lining.
2. A paper lined finger bowl comprising a bowl having an annular rim provided with an inwardly projecting flange and a basal opening in combination with a removable cup-shaped paper lining, said lining being resilient radially to be normally sprung into'a position with its top edge under and substantially covered by said flange and with its sides conforming to and substantially coincident with the interior of said bowl, and manually radially compressible to facilitate the removal thereof from said bowl on the application of pressure to the base thereof through said opening.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of February, A. D.
