Description

LEWIS HAN@ impkrovemjnt in Door Bolts.

// l l l llll /ll lll /ll l l l l l/7 itnesses. inventor.
PATENT OFFICE LEWIS J. EVANS, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,729, dated November '7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS J. EVANS, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fastening Devices for Doors, 8vo.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construe tion and operation of the same, reference being had to thetannexed drawing making a part of hereinafter claimed, the object being to provide a fastening device of simple construction and easy application.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a cylindrical case formed with two corresponding circular openings in the sides to let the key B pass through. B' represents the bolt-shaft, which is round and fits closely the interior of the case A. It is formed with anotch or recess, D, in one side, provided with a number of teeth, d, which engage with longitudinal grooves d', cut in the key B. E represents a spring in the case A behind the bolt-shaft B', designed to throw said shaft forward.
This device is applied as a sash-lock by inserting the cylinder A in a suitable recess formed in the side of the sash-frame, and cutting a cylindrical recess in the edge of the sash to receive the end of the bolt. In such case the key projects through the face of the window-frame, and should be encircled by a washer, F.
A flange, A', around the forward end of the cylinder A, having holes, a, for screws, serves as a means of securing the cylinder to the frame.
The device may be used as a mortise-catch for doors by beveling the end of the bolt and boring into the edge of the door, instead of mortising, inserting the cylinder in the hole thus formed.
It may be employed for the same purpose as an ordinary bolt for doors, in which case the spring is to be removed and the bolt-shaft worked in either direction by means of the key, inserted from the inside, but not allowed to pass through the door.'
When used as a mortise-catch the key maybe furnished with a knob on each end.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The door-bolt herein described, consisting of the cylindrical case A, the grooved key-spindle B, and the bolt-sh aft B', provided with thetoothed recess D, having the depth of the diameter of the key-spindle, the length of its developed circumference, and arranged for said keyspindle to pass entirely through from side to side, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS J. EVANS.
