IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,964, dated November 14, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Beit known that I, JAMES ALEXANDER GRANT, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Can ada, have invented certain Improvements in Cloth, Hat, and Table Brushes, of which the following is a specification:

The invention relates to the manufacture of cloth, hat, and crumb brushes wherein sponge in a dry state is used as a substitute for bristles. The sponge is compressed in'a groove or grooves in the head, stock, or handle of the brush, and fastened by transverse wires, screws, or'rivets.

Figure l is a front view of a brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.

A is the head or stock of the brush, provided with a handle, B, of any suitable form. In the lower edge of the stock is a split, sawn, or plowed groove, of suitable depth to receive the edge of a sponge, O, of the corresponding size and thickness. The sides of the groove,after the sponge is inserted, are compressed toward each other by means of screws D, as shown, or by rivets, or sewn by wires or cords passing transversely through the stock A to secure the sponge firnr 1y therein. The lower edge of the sponge projects from the stock, and, when dry, forms the '4 poses set forth.
