ANDREW DERROM, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONSTRUCTING BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,937, dated January 23, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Constructing Buildings, invented by ANDREW DERROM, of Paterson, in the county of Pass-aic and State of New J ersey.
'lhedra-wing represents a sectional elevation, showing lnyimprovement in constructing buildin gs.
The object of this invention is to protect buildings that are in process of construction, or otthorough repair, from the inclemency of the weather, and also the laborers engaged at the work. The invention consists in the use of a vertically-adjustable cap or cover, which is placed over the walls to be erected, and gradually elevated as the walls go up, meanwhile keeping them, the flooring, material, and laborers always under roof. The advantages of this method of constructing buildings are inanifold. Not only are the men kept in healthy condition, but also material is economizcd and the application of artificial heat is made possible, whereby frost can be kept out and building in inidwinter continued. The invention is equally applicable to the erection of new build; ings as to the repair of such as are burned partly down.
A in the drawing represents the lower portion of a building which is about being constructed or repaired. B is a wooden house, placed over the same, and supported on brackets or braces O (J, which are clamped or otherwise fastened to the sides of A. The wooden house 13 is, preferably, made in sections, to be conveniently and quickly put up and adjusted to houses of various sizes. Such sectional wooden houses are known, and need here not be fully described. The braces or brackets are so applied as to be easily taken off and shifted up. This will enable the gradual elevation of the wooden house as the walls of the main structure go up. In this manner the aforementioned objects of my invention are fully carried out, and the specified advantages gained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The method herein described of keeping buildings that are in process of construction constantly under roof, by the application of a vertically-adjustable covering-house, as set forth.
ANDREW DERROM.
