IMPROVEMENT IN PLATEN-GAUGES@ Specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 123,233, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HULBERT BYxBn, of Willia-msport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined VGauges and Guides for Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and tigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation ot' a plan view of my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
This invent-ion has relation to attachments for job printing-presses; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement ot' devices used in connection with the platen, and designed for the purpose of gauging the position of Vand guiding the sheet or card to be printed on. l
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention7 A represents theplaten ot' a printing-press; B, the tympan-sheet held by the metallic rim C 5 D D, a pair ot' gauge-bars designed to rest on the platen above the tyinpan-sheet. These bars are bent down at their ends so as to clamp the rim C, and are secured by means of a thumb-screw, d, at the upper end of each. The bars D are graduated to inches and fractions ot' an inch from end to end or to any extent. E E represent guide-bars, constructed with eyes e at their outer ends to slide over the gauge-bars, which lie on the pla-ten parallel to each other. `The bars E extend at right angles to the bars D, and at the inner ends are constructed with ears d2. Said bars E are adjustable along the gauge-bars to suit the size ot' the sheet or card or the position ot' the printed matter, and are held at any suitable place by means ot' the thumb-screw (l1-f, which passes through the eyes e and touches the bars D. The bars D may be brought as c lose together or moved as far apart as may be required. The sheet or card is laid on the tympan with its lower edge resting on thc ears d2. The guides E should be made thin enough to let the nippers pass over them so as to take hold of the sheet. rlhe bars D are to be made long enough to allow of lasheet or card being adjusted to the lower extreme edge ofthe platen. Side guides may be used with the gaugerods D and regulated or adjusted in the same manner as the guides marked E. Gauge-rods secured to the platen and extending below it may also be used, guides working similarly to Athose shown being employed with the extensions. The bars E are made elastic and slightly bent, so as to press against the tympan-sheet.
I claim as my invention- The graduated bars D, bent at their ends and secured to the platen ot' a printing-press by means of screws d, in combination with the guards E having the eyes e, lugs d2, and held in place by means of the screws r11, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HULBERT BYXBE.
