Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 21, 1915. Serial No. 57,131.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL GEORGE HoUREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.

y invention is an improvement in windows, and the invention has for its object to provide a window especially adapted for street cars and the like, for the use of motormen, and wherein the window is mounted to rotate and means is provided for rotating it, while cleaning means engagesv the window at its opposite faces, to thoroughly clean the same from steam, snow, rain and the like while the window is being rotated, and wherein the cleaning mechanism is hidden from view.

As is known, on cars wherein the motorman rides within the car, and watches the track through the window, it is diflicult to keep the window free from rain, steam, snow, frost and the like that impede the View, and thepresent invention is designed to provide a window that may be cleaned and freed from accretions of every character by merely rotating the window in its casing.

he window as shown is circular, comprising a circular frame 1 having a rabbet 2 in one face for receiving a sheet 3 of glass or other transparent material, and the sheet is held in place by a molding 4 fitting in the rabbet.

The frame has an annular peripheral groove 5, and a belt 6 engages the groove, the belt extending to suitable operating mechanism capable of being operated manually or by power to rotate the window.

The window frame or casing is also provided in its opposite faces with annular is a section on the line 2-2 of grooves 7, the said or supporting frames 9, the said frames ing circular as shown, and being secured to the walls 10 of the car by means of screws or nails 11.

The window proper is mounted between the Walls of the car with the tongues 8 in the grooves 7, and a series of balls 12-is arranged in the bottom of each groove between t e tongue and the groove.

Each of the casing frames 9 is provided with a pair of parallel laterally spaced radial arms 13, the said arms extending inwardly toward thecenter of the frame, and the free ends of the arms are offset inwardly with respect to the adjacent casing frame, toward the window proper.

Each of these arms 13 of each frame supports a strip 14 of cleaning material, as for instance, rubber, and the inner edge of each of the strips 14 engages'the adjacent manner that when-the window is rotated in its support,-the rubber strips willbear against the opposite faces of the sheet, and

will clean the'salne and free them from anyaccretions that may have collected thereon.

It will be noticed that the'openings 15 through the walls 10 are semicircular and they are in register, the arrangement being such that only half of the glass sheet 3 is exposed to view, namely the upper half.

The belt 6 may if desired be connected to a wheel or pulley driven by the motor, so that the sash will be continuously driven, or it may be rotated at redetermined intervals or at will, as may be desired.
