SYRUP-PUMP.
Application filed May 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Fnnonniox C. Wiser- I-AL-L, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Syrup-Pump, of. which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to syrup pumps for soda water fountains and has for its object a pump which is particularly simple and economical in construction and which consists in a comparatively few, compactly-arranged parts; and the invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a syrup pump unit embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of parts seen in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, partly broken away, and partly in elevation, taken on line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the plane of line H, Fig. 2, parts being omitted, and parts being shown in elevation.
This syrup pump comprises, generally, a top plate having openings therein, a nozzle mounted on the top plate including a hollow body, or housing, which is alined with one of the openings and a discharge passage alined with the other opening, a pump including a cylinder supported from the top plate, a piston movable in the cylinder, means for operating the piston including parts located in the housing and extending through the openings in the top plate alined with the housing and a handle on the outside of the housing and a discharge pipe leading from the cylinder to the discharge opening to the nozzle through the second opening of the top plate.
1 designates the top plate which constitutes the cover of a receptacle of a soda water fountain in which the syrup is located, the top plate being formed with openings 2, 3, one of these openings as 2 being an elongated opening or slot and the other 8, circular and through which the discharge pipe 1 extends.

with the slot 3 and it also includes a spout having its discharge passage 7 alined with the opening 2 and communicating with the pipe 1.
8 is the cylinder of the pump, which cylinder is suspended from the top plate in any suitable manner, as by rods 9. The cylinder is provided with a suitable flap valve 10 in its lower end.
11 is the piston movable in the cylinder, and 12 is the piston rod which extends up wardly to a. point below the slot 2 in the top plate.
The means for operating the piston comprises mechanism located in the housing and extending through the slot 2, and a handle mounted on the outside of the housing.
The mechanism in the housing 6 includes a rock shaft 13 having a rock arm 14 thereon which extends through the slot 2 and which is connected to the upper end of the piston rod 12. The rock shaft 13 is journaled in bearings 15 in opposite side walls of the housing 6 and said shaft includes a central enlarged portion 16, reduced axle portions 17 journaled in the bearings 15 and. noncircular or square portions 18 at the ends of the axle portions.
The enlarged portion 16 is non-circular and is oblong in general form with rounding ends, for a purpose to be presently described.
The rock shaft is held in position by means of screws 19 threaded into opposite ends thereof against washers 20 which overlie portions of the handle mounted on the square portions 18, and interposed between the washers 20 and the outer face of the bearings 15. The rock arm 14 is here shown as provided with a strap 21 at one end which is looped around the non-circular portion 16 of the rock shaft and is clamped in position by means of a screw 22 extending through the free end of said loop and into the body of the rock arm 14.
The rock arm 14 is pivoted at 23 to a link 24 into which threads the upper end of the piston rod 12.
25 is the handle for operating the rock shaft 13, this handle including a yoke 26 bent from sheet metal, the opposite arms thereof being arranged astride and extending on opposite sides of the housing 6 and being mounted upon the square portions 18 of the shaft 13.
In operation, when it is desired to pump syrup from the receptacle, the handle 25 is pulled to the left from its position shown in Fig. 2, thus causing the rock arm 14 to move downwardly and press the piston 11 toward the bottom of the cylinder and force the syrup in the cylinder up through the discharge pipe 4 and out through the passage 7. The handle is then pushed rearwardly or to the right, whereupon the parts are restored to their normal position and the syrup is drawn into the cylinder 8 past the flap valve 10 until the piston 11 moves above the top of the cylinder 8.
This syrup pump is particularly advantageous in that owing to the use of a rocking handle, no part of the handle moves below the top plate or into the housing where it may come in contact with the syrup as in pumps having reciprocating handles, and further in that the handle can be conven iently operated without a returning spring as in the pumps heretofore used, in which the spring is exposed to the syrup. Furthermore, owing to the arrangement of the rocking handle and the housing, the water used in cleansing the outside of the fountain or the top plate cannot work into the housing and into the syrup.
\Vhat I claim is:
l. A syrup pump unit for soda fountains comprising a top plate formed with an opening, a housing mounted on the top plate over the opening, a pump supported from the top plate and including a piston, and means for operating the piston comprising a rock shaft journaled in the housing and having its ends exposed on the outside of the housing, connections between the rock shaft and the piston, said connections extending through the opening in the top plate and including a part movable in the housing and mounted on the rock shaft, and an operating member mounted on the rock shaft and on the outside of the housing and movable astride the same for rocking the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A syrup pump unit for soda fountains comprising a top plate formed with an opening, a housing mounted on the top plate over the opening, a pump including a pis ton, and means for operating the piston comprising a part located in the housing and connected to the piston, and an operating member arranged astride the housing and connected to the part within the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A syrup pump unit for soda fountains comprising a top plate formed with an open ing, a housing mounted on the top plate over the opening, a pump supported from the top plate and including a piston, and means for operating the piston comprising a rock shaft, the housing being formed with alined bearings and the rock shaft including an enlarged intermediate portion located in the housing and abutting at its ends against opposing faces of the bearings and reduced axle portions journaled in the bearing, connections between the intermediate portion ofthe rock shaft and the piston, said connections extending through the opening in the top plate, and means mounted on the shaft outside of the housing for rocking the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described:

A syrup pump unit for soda fountains comprising a top plate formed with an openin a housing mounted on the top plate and alined with the opening, a pump including a piston, and means for operating the piston comprising a rock shaft supported by the housing, the housing being formed with alined bearings and the rock shaft being journaled in the bearings, connections between the intermediate portion of the rock shaft and the piston, said connections extending through the opening in the top plate, and means for operating the rock shaft, comprising a handle having a yoke, the opposite ends of which are on the end portions of the rock shaft, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
