EDMUND J. H. THIEMER, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
BORING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 191 '7.
Application led December 16, 1916. Serial No. 137,297.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMuND J. H. Tiananmen, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boring- Tools, of which the following 1s a specification.
The invention relates to portable woodboring implements of the angle-boring type, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple easily operated tool adapted for service in floor pockets and other situations ditlicult of access, in which angle braces of the usual character cannot be employed successfully.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and arrangement of parts by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.
Figure l is a side elevation of the 1mproved tool, arranged for boring a .vertical hole from below, and partly 1n vertical section. Y
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, partly in elevation.
Fig. 3 is an elevation corresponding to Fig. l but on a smaller scale, showing the tool arranged for boring a vertical hole between the walls of a partition from the in- The latter and the partition are shown in vertical section.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the tool alone, corresponding to Fig. 3, seen from the left in that ligure. The dotted radial lines show various angular positions in which the boring bit may be set and operated.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The frame of the tool comprises two main portions at a right angle each to the other; one portion which will be termed the standard, and which extends vertically when the tool is in operation, is a tube A brazed or otherwise firmly secured to an open headA1 at the upper end and to a somewhat similar open head A2 at the lower end. The tube A incloses a driving-shaft B carrying a beveled gearwheel B2 at its lower end within the head A2 and a similar wheel B1 at the upper end within the head A1; the drivingshaft B extends across the head A1 and has a bearing at A3. Above the head A1 is a handle A4 by which the tool may be held and applied.
lOn one side of the head A1 is a boss A5 serving as a bearing for a laterally positioned short crank-shaft C carrying on its inner end a beveled gearwheel C1 in mesh with the beveled gearwheel B1, and on its outer end a crank C2 by which it may be turned and rotary motion imparted to the vertical driving-shaft B.
From the lower head A2 extends a lateral tube D forming the other main portion of the frame, which will be termed the branch.
It receives a tubular extension D1 forming part thereof, arranged to slide telescopically therein and which may also be rotated relatively thereto as will be described.
The movable tube or extension D1 carries at its outer end an open head D2 and incloses a horizontal driven-shaft E on which is mounted a beveled gearwheel E1 in mesh with a similar wheel F1 supported on a short vertical bit-shaft F mounted in the head D2 and is equipped with a chuck or socketpiece, indicated at F 2in which is received the shank of a boring bit G firmly held by a screw F3 or otherwise.
The opposite or inner end of the drivenshaft E 1s splined as at e and extends across and through the opposite wall of the head A2 in which it is free to slide, and carries a beveled gearwheel E2 having a feather E3 engaged slidably in the spline e so that this end of the driven-shaft E may slide through the wheel E2 while the latter is held in mesh with the beveled gearwheel An extension E3 of the hub of the wheel E2 is screw-threaded and receives a collar E4 forming with the hub an annular groove by which the wheel is held against movement axially of the shaft E while permitting it to rotate with the latter.
By sliding the tubular extension D1 into or out of the tube D the distance between the driving-shaft B and bit G may be varied as required in adapting the tool to various situations, and by rotating the extension relatively to the branch D the bit may be projected in any angular direction desired radially of the shaft E. Any suitable means may be employed to hold the branch D and extension D1 in such relative positions; the means shown comprises a spring dog H mounted on the outer tube orbranch and projecting"inwardly through a holed` in such tube and matching to and receivedin any one of a series of holes Z1 in the eXtension D1. The holes Z1 are preferably arranged as shown in a plurality of circumferential groups so that the bit may be ad-` justed at any desired distance from the dri-ving-shaft B, within the range of the tool, and also set at any desired radial angle at the distance thus selected. The tool is ydesigned more especially for service in electric Wiring operations, iny which it is often necessary'to make openings through plates and beams and other obstructions to which access is difii'cult or imprad ticable except by great labor or by considerable damage to adjacent Walls, fioors or ceilings. @ne such situation frequently 'enf countered is indicated in Fig. 3, in' which it is required to bore a hole from the space' between adjacent floor joists, through the" iooi and partition-plate, t0 the interior of a vertical partition. The improved tool' permits this to be easily accomplished with but little, easily repaired, damage, by simply removing a small section of the flooring, one shortlength of the flooring-board is usually sufficient, cut at a short distance from the surbase, and inserting the tool into the pocket thus formed, having previously adjusted the telescopic branch to provide the required length. The tool is then firmly grasped bythe handle and drawn upivard't'o hold the bit to its vivorlgand by turning the crank the bit is rotated to bore the desired hole. After the Wiring has beenrcompleted the small opening in the floor may be easily and neatly closed.
It Will be understood that the sizes and proportionsV of the parts, the character of the frame, the location of the handle At and crank C2, and the means` for adjusting the" Copies of lthis patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing lthe Coniniissionexi oi.' lafcvepiiits,` I
