TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Original application filed June 29, 1910, Serial No. 569,502. Divided and this application filed September 1, 1917. Serial No. 189,255.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVALTER WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in t-ypewriting machines, and more particularly to a mechanism for shifting a polychrome or a bichrome-ribbon mechanism both automatically, to correspond with the travel of the car-rm e, and manually. This case is a division 0 my application, Serial No. 569,502, filed June 29, 1910.
An automatic control is provided for changing the ribbon-shifting mechanism so as to print red and black, at different intervals, corresponding ,to different typewriting columns or zones, as determined by the carriage. This mechanism is driven at the same time that the carriage is driven from a train of gearing driven by a motor. The automatic control of the ribbon-shifting mechanism may be thrown out of action or silenced by shifting a cam, which moves an operating cam vertlcall 1 out of register with its follower. Then t e bichrome ribbonshifting mechanism can be controlled manually, to enable the printingof characters,
either red or black.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section, taken from.
front to rear, with parts omitted to simplify the showing. r
Fig. 2 is a rear view, in elevation, showing the train of gearing from the motor to the ('arria e and ,to the automatic control for the ri hon-shifting mechanism.
Fi 3 is a skeleton perspective View, showing t econnection from the automatic control and the hand control to the ribbon-shifting mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a detail section, showing a lostmotion connection between the shaft, which operates the ribbon-shifting mechanism, and the hand-crank or manual control for oper atingthe same. This view shows the shaft in the position corresponding to the printing of black characters.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, except that the shaft is shifted to print red characters.
Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section of the cam of the automatic control, showing the same lowered to an inactive position, and out of active register with the follower.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 6, showing in full lines the parts in the same relation as in. Fig. 6, and in dotted lines the outer position of the follower with the cylindrical cam raised and the follower riding on the latter.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the invention, as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, character keys 1 depress key levers 2 to rock bell cranks 3, so as to swing type-bars'4 up rearwardly against the front side of a platen 5 mounted to rotate on a carriage 6. The carriage 6 may beadvanced step by step under the control of an escapement mechanism, indicated in general at 7. This escapement mechanism is the same as is found in the standard Underwood typewriting machine; and includes a rack bar 8 pivotallv mounted on the carriage 6, and meshing wit a pinion 9 connected by a one-way pawland-ratchet mechanism 9 to an escapement wheel 10. The escapement wheel 10 is controlled in its rotation by a fixed dog 11 and a loose dog 12 mounted on a rocker 13. The rocker 13 is actuated each time a character key 1 is de rcssed, by means of a universal frame 14. he frame 14 is in turn operated by a heel 15 carried by each of the typebars 4 The universal frame 14 returns with the return of the type-bars 4, as the character keys 1 return to their normal positions.
'- This is done by means of a spring 16 acting on the universal frame 14.
The type-bars 4 print on the work-sheet carried by the carriage 6 indirectly through a ribbon 17, which may be polychrome and which is interposed between the types 18 and 19 on the type-bars 4 and the worksheet on the platen 5. In the present case, the ribbon 17 is shown to be a'bichrome ribbon having its upper half black, as indicated at 20, and its lower half red,..as indicated at 21. The ribbon 17 is threaded through a vibrator 22, which is raised at the operation of each'of the characte ys .1
to interpose the ribbon 17 between the types 18 and 19 and the worksheet carried by the For printin platen 5.
The ribbon 17 is raised a greater or less amount, accordin to whether it is desired to print red or glack. For this purpose, the vibrator 22 is operated by a bell-crank 23, which includes one arm comprising a hook 24 connected directly to the shank of the vibrator 22. Another arm 25 of the bellcrank 23 has a pair of studs 26 and 27, projecting from opposite sides thereof at different distances from the pivot of the bellcrank 23. The studs 26 and 27 are engaged and operated alternately by a pair of flanges 28 and 29 forming part of a shift 30. The shift 80 is mounted on the universal frame 14 and vibrates back and forth with the latter at the actuation of the character keys 1, so as to raise and lower the ribbon 17 a greater or less amount, depending upon whether the stud 27 is in engagement with the flange 29 or the stud 26 is in en agement with the flange 28. The shift 30 ass a pin-andslot connection 31 with the universal rame 14, to permit of a relative shifting movement.
The flanges 28 and 29 have vertical slots 32 and 33, whereby the shift 30 may be positively connected alternatively with either the stud 26 or the stud 27. For printing red characters, the parts are in theposition of Fi 3, with the stud 27 in the slot 33, so that t e vibrator 22 is swung upwardly at the actuation of any of the character keys 1 the maximum distance, so as to brin the lower red section 21 of the ribbon 1 between the types 18 and 19 arid the platen 5. black characters, the shift 30 is slid in t e opposite direction, so as to bring the flange 28 into active connection with the stud 26, whereby the vibrator 22 will be swing the minimum distance, so as to bring the upper black section 20 of the ribbon 17 between the types 18 and 19 and the laten 5. i
T e shift 80 is adjusted sidewise for printing black or red, by means of a link 34, which, in turn, is operated by an arm 35 secured to the rock shaft 36. The rock shaft 36 ma be operated manually by means of a han -crank 37, so as to determine hether the. rinting shall be red or blac The ban -crank 37 may be locked in its adjusted ositi on by means of a detent 38 and has a ost-motion connection 39 with tlie shaft 36, so that the shaft 36 may be otherwise 0 erated to change the color of printing with out disturbing the hand-crank 87. I
, As explained in the desirable to print blac in-certain computing zones or major columns, and in other colnputin zones or major columns to print red, the c ange from printing black to red, and VICE verse, was done automaticall 1 1 parent case, if it was.
der the control of means driven in synchro nism with the ty ewriter carriage. For this purpose, the rec -shaft 36, which controls the position of the shift 30 is operated from a source other than -the hand-crank 37. This includes an arm 40 secured to the rock shaft 36 Band operated by a link 41 against the tension of a spring -42. The link 41 is guided in its movement by extending in an opening through a bracket 13, and is lim-- ited in its movement by means of a collar 44 secured to the link 41 and engagin the bracket 43. The link 41 is operated y an arm 45 secured to a shaft 46, which, in turn, is operated by a follower 47. The follower 47 is o erated by a cam 48 secured to the vertica shaft 49.
The shaft 49 is rotated in synchronism with the carriage 6, so that its movements will keep pace with the movements of the earria e from zone to zone. For this purpose, t e carriage 6 is provided with a rack 50 engaged by a gear 51. The car 51 is secured to a shaft 52 which may e driven from a motor 53 by mearfs of a train of gearing'includin a bevel ear 54, secured to the vertical sha t 52 an meshing with a bevel gear 55, secured to a horizontal shaft '56, which, in turn, is connected to the motor shaft by means of a pair of intermeshing bevel gears 57 and 58, secured, respectively, to the motor shaft and the shaft 56.
The shaft 52 is connected to the cam shaft 49 by means of a train of gearing including a bevel gear 59 secured to the shaft 52 and meshing with a bevel gear 60 secured to a shaft 61. The shaft 61 is provided with a bevel gear 62, which meshes with a bevel car 63 secured to a shaft '64. The shaft 64 is provided with a gear 65 meshing with a gear 66 secured on the cam shaft 49. The train of gearing between the carriage 6/and the cam shaft. 49 is such that the cam shaft 49 will make a complete revolution for one run of the carriage 6 from end to end of its travel. Thus, the cam 48 can be so arranged as to control the change in the color of printin to correspond with the different .computing zones or major columns, as deterinaximum swing to theribbon 17, so t at the lower strip 21 will come between the types 18 and 19 and the work-sheet carried by the platen 5. 0n the same horizontal p am as the cam rise 67, there may be provided one or more depressed sections 68 nearer the axis of the shaft 49, which correspond to the osition oftheshift 30 to the right of that s own in Fig. 6, which permits same, renders the cam 48 incapable of moving the follower 47, and thus incapable of controlling the shift 30. This silences the automatic control of the color of printing, but a change can be made by means of the hand-crank 37, as explained above. To shift the cam 48 vertically, and thus determine its active and inactive positions, the
shaft 49 is adjustable vertically. For this purpose, the shaft 49 is provided with a collar 70, which rests on a cam 71 secured to a rock shaft 72. The rock shaft 72 is operated by a lever 7 3, which, when in the position of Fig. 2, holds the rotatable shaft 49 and the cam 48 in their raised active position. When the lever 73 is swung down, the control shaft 49 and the cam 48 are lowered to their inactive positions.
The operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. The cam 48 is formed with one or more rises 67 and one ormore' depressed sections 68, accordin to a prearranged plan of colors of printing desired in the several zones or major columns, as determined by the travel of the carriage 6. When it is desired to control automatically a change in the color or character of the printing to correspond with the different zones automatically, the lever --73 is placed in the Fig. 2 position with the earn 48 raised. so as to be capable of opcrating the follower 47 against the tension of the spring 42, and thus determines the position of the shift 30. The position of the shift 30, in turn, determines the'stroke of the vibrator 22 at each operation of one of the character keys 1, since the rotary position of the shaft 49, and thus the cam 48 is controlled in synchronisin with the position of the carriage 6 by the interconnecting trains of gearing. The rises 67 and, depressed portions 68 will determine the color of printing to correspond with the succes sive zonal position of the carriage 6. When the follower is in engagement .with the raisedxportion 67,.then the shift-3O will be sin th'eFigQ 3 position, corresponding to a maximum movement of the vibrator .22, so as to interpose the lower red section of the ribbon 21 between the types 18 and Band the work sheetcarried by the platen 5. When the control shaft 49 is. rotatedto such, a position that a de ressed portion 68 thereof is. in register wit the follower 47, then the shift 30.will be adjusted to the opposite extreme of .its movement, so as to cause a minimum vibration of the ribbon 17, thus interposing the upper black section 20 of the ribbon 17 between the types 18 and 19 and the work-sheet carried by the platen 5.
The automatic control of color printing can be silenced by shifting the lever 73 to a horizontal position, which will lower the shaft 49 and the cam 48, so as to bring the continuous cylindrical portion 69 of the cam 75 48 in register with the follower 47. The automatic control can then rotate idly with out operating the follower 47, and, thus, without changin the position of the bichrome ribbon-s ifting mechanism. Undcr such circums ances, if it is desired to change from printing one color to printing with the other color, the shifting mechanism can be adjusted by the hand-crank 37 Normally, the hand-crank 37 is in the po- 35 sition of F ig. 3, and is yieldingly locked in this position by the 'detent 38. The automatic control can operate the bichromeshifting mechanism without changing the position of the handcrank 37, so that when the automatic control is silenced the spring 42 will return the same to a normal position, corresponding to .the position of the handcrank 37; the lost motion provided by the pin-and-slot or lost-motion connection 39 permits the automatic control to rock the shaft 36 without disturbing the handcrank 37.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
