To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, HENRY W. WINTER, citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved collar holder for military coats and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character for supporting the collar from the collar band of the coat to project a uniform distance above the said collar band.

The invention has as a further object to provide a collar holder adapted to engage beneath the lower edge of the collar and which will frictiona-llv engage with the'collar for clamping the collar band of the coat snugly about the collar as well as preventing accidental displacement of the holder. 7

And the invention has as a still further object to provide a holder which will be especially simple in construction and which may be readily attached to the collar band of substantially any conventional pattern of military coat.

Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds, and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the holderon a slightly enlarged scale,

Fig. 4 is a sectional View particularly showing the formation of the body of the clip of the holder, and

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4, and illustrating the manner in which the attaching pin for the holder clip is swiveled upon the said clip.

In carrying out the invention my improved holder is formed with a collar engaging clip which is preferably constructed body. Preferably, the upper end of the hook is formed with an outwardly directed terminal 13 lying somewhat below the upper -end of the body so that the clip may be positioned to receive the lower edge of a collar between the said terminal and the body for easily and quickly directing the collar through the reduced throat 12 beneath the hook by simply sliding the clip upwardly upon the collar. the body 10 of the clip is formed with a laterally enlarged portion 14 extending throughout the major portion of the length of the body and struck from the said enlarged portion medially of the body is an outwardly directed transversely curved lug 15 having its axis parallel to the axis of the body. In this connection it will be noted that the laterally enlarged portion of the clip will reinforce the body about this lug so that the clip body will not be weakened by having the lug released therefrom, while the said enlarged portion of the body will also provide an increased bearing area therefor. Engaged beneath the lug 15, as particularly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, is the inner side member 16 of an attaching pin 17. This attaching pin is preferably in the form of an ordinary safety pin and is supported by the lug 15 to extend longitudinally of the body 10 of the clip, being swiveled to the clip by the said lug so that the pin may be swung to lie fiat against the body. Preferably, the pin shank 18 of the pin is, as particularly shown in Fig. 3, presented downwardly so that the pin may be engaged with a piece of fabric by thrusting the pin shank downwardly through the fab ric. Only a small attaching pin need be em ployed and, as shown in the drawings, such pin is preferably of a length somewhat less than the length of the body 10 of the clip so that the pin may lie behind the clip body within the lines thereof.

in order that the mounting and operation of the holder may be accurately understood, shown the device in connection with a con- 'ventional type of shirt 19 having a neck are secured, in the manner suggested in Fig.

1, to the inner side of the collar band of the coat at suitably spaced points thereon. In thus mounting the holders in position, the shanks 18 of the attaching pins 17 of the holders are engaged through the fabric at the inner side of the collar band of the coat so that the said attaching pins will support the'holders in position with the hooks 12 of the clips thereof presented upwardly. Thus, when putting on the coat, the said hooks may be easily engaged beneath the lower edge of the collar, in the manner previously described, when thesaid hooks will, owing to their resiliency, act to clamp the collar between the free ends of the hooks and the bodies 10 of the clips at the reduced throats 12. Accidental displacement of the clips will thus be prevented while the clips will also tend to clamp the upper margin of the collar band 23 of the coat snugly about the collar. Since the attaching pins 17 of the holders may, as previously described, be swung to lie flat against the bodies of the clips, the presence of the holders between the collar and collar band of the coat will not prove uncomfortable. Furthermore, as will now ,be clear, the hooks of the clips, when engaged beneath the collar will, as particularly brought out in Fig. 2 of the drawings, support the collar from the'collar band of the coat to project uniformly above the said collar band. The neat appearance of the collar will thusalways be assured.

It will, therefore, be seen that I provide a very simple and eflicient construction for the purpose set forth and a device which may be readily attached to the collar band of substantially any conventional pattern of military coat while, at the same time, the holder may be readily detached when desired. v

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed-as new is.:

A collar holder of the character described including a clip provided with a body, a collar engaging hook directed upwardly along one side of the body from the lower end thereof, a lug struck from the body and extending longitudinally thereof, and an attaching member for the clip engaged be-- neath said lug and extending longitudinally with respect to said hook.
