Description

` I d `Dnvm MATTHEW,
TEs PATENT oFFIoE.
OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
srARK-ARRESTER.
" L] iSpecicatoniof LettersPatenhN. 12,865, dated May 15, 1855.
`Be it` known `that I, :DAVID MATTHEW, of the city "of Philadelphia, State `ofI"enn-` i Sylvania, `have inventedwa new anduseful" Improvementin the `Smoke-Pipes of Loco-j` motive SteameEngineszandnI do hereby dei lclare ,that the followinglisa full, clear, andV `exact description ithereof, reference being part hereof.
had to the accompanying drawings, making i My ,i invention. ansias if; having in anfdrjthebetter relieving the section removed. Fig. 3, is a top viewlof the chimney section removed. i
i ``A\is the `front part `of `the locomotive` lboiler showing'the flues andsmoke box cond taining the chimneysection R. D, D, is the )exhaust pipes, I is the chimney. d
. When bituminousycoal or other' heavy Mfuels is usedand theksparks would remain` in, the smoke box;` in `order to cause the `sparks to ascend fromthe smoke box into the chimney andbecomelarrested by the ap- `paratus I extend a section of the chimney down into the `smokebox so that its open end `orfmouthshallbehear to the` sparks `thatwliein the bottomoffthe box and'so that` this chimney "section" shall `there stand directly 'over `the "mouths ofthe exhaustpipes and comes down within A: inches of their "level, theV exhaust pipes presenting their mouths at the lower" openinglof the chimney section directedupward@ and discharge the exhaust steamrup `the chimney.`` This chimney section thus extended into the smoke box and coming down to within 4 inches of the vexhaust pipes by itsposition and the current caused bythe exhaust, draws up the `sparks that would otherwise beleft in the vsmoke box in an ignited state and injure it and obstruct the lower flues.
The chimney section R is extended down inthe smo-ke box leaving an annular space of 2 inchesbetween it, and the upper chimney I and the exhaust pipes do not pass through thesides Ofthis chimney section to discharge into" it, as this would obstruct the (draft, but present `their mouths to its lower end,A andare within 4.- inches and exhaust up it. `This extended chimney section R Fig. 1, 2, "shown vin my original patent granted Feby th 1849 by the dotted lines is necessary to be constructed with the exhaust pipes as described and shown to removethe heavy sparks from the smoke box to be arrested and consumed.
The following is the operation of the apparatus.y When the engine is at work and the exhaust steam is passed into the chimney section from the exhaust pipes as described `the sparks and heated air enter the lower end R, of the chimney section I, and this currentof heated air and sparks will be thrown intoa spark arrester of any form or kind. n
,What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The annular space between the base of the smoke pipe and the section extending down into the smokebox with the exhaust pipes "underneath, arranged as, and for the pun poses herein set forth.
DAVID MATTHEW.
