Description

J. P. WALL.
METHOD or MAKING HAND WHEELS FOR mvfs:
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 25. 191B.

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
JAMES P. WALL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
METHOD 0F MAKING I-IANDWHEELS FOR VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 10, 1918.
Original application :tiled May 24, 1916, Serial No. 99,651 Divided. and this application led June 25,
. 1918. Serial No. 241,891.
Fig. 2 is a sectionion the line II-II of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the grip lmember partially formed, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the partially completed Wheel. Y
My invention has relation to hand wheels or handles for valve stems and the like, and more particularly, to devices of this character in which the hand grip is formed by a helix of wire seated upon a central member or core.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel method for assembling a wheel of this character and as a result of which a superior wheel is produced.
The lpresent application is a division of my application Serial No. 99,651, filed May 24, 1916, now Patent No. 1,272,788, issued July 16, 1918.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a central member or core 2, consisting of a hub' portion perforated at 3, to receive the valve stem or spindle, and a rim portion. The member 2 is formed of brass, copper or other malleable metal, which can be bent or flanged, and is initially provided with the outwardly bent flange 4 at one end, the other end being left substantially unflanged. 5 designates a coil or helix of wire, and 6 an annular attaching member or band.
In the manufacture of this hand grip,
the coil or helix 5, which has'been cut to the proper length, is threaded upon the annular band 6, in the manner indicated in Fig. 3. After the helix has been threaded upon the band in this manner the band and helix are then slipped over the unlianged end of the member 2, which it preferably fits snugly, and this endrportion .2 is then flanged outwardly, as indicated at 7 in Fig. 2. This flanging causes the hand grip to be securely pinched between the flanges 4 and 7 and to be frictionally held thereby in a manner to prevent its rotation upon the member 2.
The invention provides a simple, eiiicient and practical method of forming articles of the described' character rapidly and cheaply, and of superior quality.
When properly made in accordance with the invention, the hand grip cannot slip upon the core and the various coils of the grip are each frictionally clamped against the rim portion of the core, giving a rm gripping action to the handle.
I claim: s y
1. The herein described method of making hand wheels, which consists in providing a central member or core of malleable material and having a rim portion, threading a coilY therein, slipping said grip containing the annulus over the unflanged end portionV of the core, `vand then Hanging said end portion to confine the grip and frictionally securing it between the two flanges of the core; substantially as described.
Y In testimony'whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
VJAMES P. WALL.
