` FUEL-SAVER.
To all whom t may concern: i i y y Be it known that I, HENRY ALFRED Woon, a subject of the King of Great Brita-in, and resident of the city of Kingston, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion `of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in` Fuel-Savers, of which the "ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fuel savers for furnaces and other heating devices, and the objects of the invention are to provide means whereby a complete combustion of the fuel will take place, thereby` eliminating smoke and thus `obtaining a greater eiciency of the furnace and to so arrange the fuel saver that a predetermined mixture of gas and liquid can be fed to 'the furnace to intermiX with the products of combustion to complete the combustion of the same.
Further objects still are to provide for a ready inspection of the device so that the furnace attendant can see at a glance the manner in which the mixture of gas and liquid is being fed to the furnace and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions of them. y
With the above and other objects in lview the invention consists essentially of the improved coustruction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a furnace of any usual description provided with a grate 10 above which a plate 11 is supported by the spider 12.
As the products of combustion from the fuel on the grate strike on the plate they are delivered around the edge thereof and passed between the edge of the said plate and the furnace wall. At this point it is desirable that a completion of the combustion of the flue gases should take place, and to this end l provide means B whereby a mixture of air and water or of other known gas and liquid is delivered to the plate 11 where the said water or liquid is vaporized and the gas thus formed and the intermixed air will Specicatioii of Letters Patent.

The means B consists of a casing 13 in closing a glass tube 111 which forms a sight feed, part of the glass being exposed so that it will come directly under the observation of the furnace attendant. y

In furnaces using gas, oil, or other heating means instead of coal, or like fuel the grate 10 is dispensed with and a gas or oil ring 21 is located below `the plate 11 as `shown in Fig. 1.
When a furnace is equipped in this manner and is in use the products of combustion after impinging on the plate 11 pass between the edge of the same and the furnace wall and are ultimately delivered to the iue of the furnace.
After the fire has been started the attendant regulates the three-way valve or cock 17 permitting the desired quantity of air or other gas to pass through the inlet 18 into the sight feed glass 14: and simultaneously with the regulation of this valve 17, water or other liquid will be permitted to flow from the reservoir through the pipe 19 and inter mixing` with the air or gas passing through the inlet 18 will pass through the glass 14 to the pipe 16 which delivers the mixture to the top of the plate 11.
The water or liquid is thus vaporized forming a gas or gases which commingles with the air or other gas and products of combustion and creates an after burning so completing the combustion and increasing the efficiency of the furnace.
It will be readily understood that the air or gas passing through the inlet 18 is 1nduced by the natural draft of the furnace and this air or gas will cause an entraining action on the water or other liquid passing through the pipe 19 from the reservoir 20, so that it is not absolutely necessary that the reservoir 20 should be placed above the level of the furnace. The only reason for doing so in the embodiment illustrated is for the sake of convenience.
Of course when the reservoir 20 is located above the furnace the liquid will be fed by gravity and the flow will naturally be increased by this entraining action due to the passage of the gas through the inlet 18.
From this description, it will be seen that IV have invented a fuel saver which can be advantageously mounted on furnaces at present in use in household heating systems whereby a complete combustion of the fuel will take place and a higher efliciency thus obtained in the heating system.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.-
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device .of the class described, a furnace having the usual grate, a supplemental means for completing or perfecting the combustion of the gases from the grate comprising a plate supported over the grate andv means for feeding a mixture of gas and liquid onto said plate, substantially'as described. Y
2. In a device of the class described, a furnace having the usual grate, a disk supported over thegrate, means for feeding a mixture of air and water onto the said plate to further the combustion of the fuel gas arising from the grate and means for controlling the mixture of gas and liquid, substantially as described.
3. In a furnace and in combination, a fuel saving device comprising a plate located therein, a sight feed conduit, a three-way cock coacting with the sight feed conduit, gas and liquid inlets on the cock and a pipe leading from the sight feed conduit designed to deliver a mixture of liquid and gas above the said plate.
4. In a device of the class described, a furnace having the usual grate, a `)late supported over the grate, the plate being circular and of less diameter than the furnace thereby providing a space for the products of combustion to pass between the edge of the plate and the sides of the furnace, means for feeding a mixture .of liquid and gas onto the center of the plate thus furthering the combustion of -fuel equally as the products of combustion pass between the edge of the plate and the sides of the furnace.
