Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1919.
Application filed April 20, 191,8. Serial No. 229,710.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that ll, JOHN HENRY TROY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, county and'Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to folding` or pocket utensils and particularly to toilet articles, such ascombs, toothbrushes, and the like which are conveniently carried inthe pocket or hand bag of the user.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved article ofthe aforesaid character that shall be compact and attractive when folded, readily7 adjustable for use, and capable of Abeing manufactured in large quantities at small cost.
Another object is to provide a folding comb, brush or the like arranged and constructed in such manner that the teeth or bristles form parts of a unitary member which is adjustable as a whole and are protected when the device is folded and are brought into position for use by a simple turning movement.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood I will now proceed to describethe same in the following specification, and will then point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a folding comb with the teeth in position for Lilse.
Fig. 2 is a partially sectional elevation of the same structure drawn to a larger scale.
Fig, 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are sections taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, the teeth being show-v folded in Fig. 4i, partially open in Fig. 5, and fully extended in position for use in Fig. 6.
Fig. 7 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, of a folding brush which also constitutes an embodiment of my invention.
Figs. 8 and 9 are sections on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7, with the bristles withdrawn or folded and open in the respective figures.
Fig. 10 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2, of a slightly modified structure inl which the casing is arranged to automatically clean the comb teeth as the comb is folded.
Fig. 1l is a detail view of the outer shell ofthe Fig. 10` structure.
yrlpeeial reference may first be had to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, in which 10 designates the body or supporting member which has a cylindricalhandle or extension 11 and a recess 12 in which a tooth -bearing'member or combelement 13 mounted.
The supporting member of the comb is substantially semi-cylindrical in section opposite the recess 12 as clearly indicated at 1l in Figs. a, and 6. The unitary toothed member or comb element has trunnion projections 15 and 16, at its respective ends which are pivotally supported in sockets 1T and 18 formed in the body member 10 at the respective ends of the recess 12 and adj acent to the semi-cylindrical section 14 at the periphery.
The arrangement of parts is such that the comb element 13 may be readily assembled in the recess 12 with its trunnions seated in the sockets 17 and 18. In addition to the parts above described, the comb comprises an outer shell or casing 19 which fits onto the body 10 and is rotatable relative thereto. It is held in position without interfering with its rotation by any suitable means such as a screwv o1l rivet 20.
The shell 19 is provided with a longitudinal slot 21 through which the teeth of the comb element are adapted to extend.
When the parts occupy the position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 1, the comb is in its folded position and is ready to be carried in the pocket or hand bag.
Attention is directed tothe fact that it is very compact and attractive, its general appearance being similar to a fountain pen.
When it is desired to use the comb it is only necessary to turn the shell 19 and the handle extension 11 relative to each other in order to move the comb element into the position shown in Fig. 6; the parts occupy a series of intermediate positions, one of which is shown in Fig. 5.
The shell 19 is preferably fitted closely over the body member 10 so that the comb element is not likely to slip and at any rate the latter is located between the edge of the recess 12 and the edge of the slot 21 when the comb is in position for use as shown in Fig. 6.
The slot 21 is preferably inclined as clearly shown in the figures in order to make it as small as possible Without interfering with the swinging movement of the teeth.
It is evident that my invention is not limited to a comb or other specific article and it may, for example, be applied to a folding brush as clearly shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9. Corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters in these figures and a brush element 22' is substituted for the comb element and has bristles 23. The shell 19 has a slot Qi which corresponds to the slot 21 but is preferably formed With {ianges 25 to guide the bristles. This is not essential to my invention and any suit-able opening may be made.
. For example, a. plurality of small openings may be substituted for the slot, this arrangement being particularly desirable for use With a comb element as shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
Referring to these drawings, the shell 19 has a plurality of single tooth openings 26 and the comb element 27 which is substituted for the element 18 has teeth 28 having their adjacent faces parallel. In this Way the teeth fit closely in the openings 26 and when the comb is closed after being used the teeth are automatically cleaned.
There is evidently a certain cleaning action When the teeth are closed in the arrangement of Figs. 1 to 6, but the arrangement of Figs. 10 and 11 is still` more effective.
Attention is particularly directed to thefact that the comb or brush element is adjusted as a Whole `and may be of standard construction so that there is no tendency for the individual teeth to Work loose or get out of order.
This application is a continuation in part of my application filed August 11, 1917, Serial No. 185,736.
Structures of preferred form and con struction have been illustrated and described for the purpose of showing a Way in Which this invention may be used, but the inventive thought upon which this application is based, is broader than these illustrative embodiments thereof, and I therefore intend no limit-ations other than those imposed by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a folding article of the character described, the combination of a casing, a unitary utility element movable inwardly and outwardly in relation thereto, and means for setting said element in position relative to said casing comprising a member having a rotary movement substantially as described.
2. In a folding utensil of the character described, the combination of a body member and a casing in rotary relation, and a utility element pivotally mounted in the body and having relatively fixed projections adapted to be forced outwardly through a slot in the casing when the relatively rotatable elements are actuated.
3. In a folding article, the combination of a substantially cylindrical body member having a semi-cylindrical recess near one end, a utility element having trunnions pivotally mounted near the circiunference of said body at the edge of said semi-cylindrical recess, and a casing rotatively mounted on theV body and having a slot through which the projections of the utility element extend.
4t. In a folding comb, the combination of a substantially cylindrical body member having a semi-cylindrical recess near one end, a combI element having trulmions pivotally mounted near the circumference of said body at the edge of said semi-cylindrical recess, and a casing rotatively mounted on the body and having a slotthrough Which the projections of the comb element extend.
5. In a folding article, the combination of a cylindrical shell or casing having a longitudinal. slot, a cylindrical body having a recess extending for a material portion of its length, a utility element having relatively fixed projections adapted to extend through the longitudinal slot of the shell, said utility element being mounted in the recess and pivoted on the body in such manner that a relative rotative movement of the body in the casing brings the projections of the utility element into operative position.
6. In a folding article, the combination of a cylindrical shell or casing hav-ing a longitudinal slot, a supporting member rotatively mounted therein, a utility element eccentrically pivoted on said body and having means adapted to be forced out through the longitudinal slot of the casing, into an operative position by the rotative adjustment of the body in the casing.
7. In a molding comb, the combination of a shell or casing having a longitudinal slo-t, a body member rotatively mounted in the casing, a unitary toothed element eccentricallytrunnioned on the body and arranged in such manner that the teeth are forced outwardly through the slot in the shell into operative position by the rotative movement of the body in the shell.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19 day of April, 1918.
JOHN H. TROY.
